Making You Think

Is this taking things too far? At Paris’ Orly airport, they are experimenting with virtual boarding agents, in the form of 2-D holograms, to help you find your destination. “Bonjour! I invite you to go to your boarding gate. Paris Airports wishes you a bon voyage,” is the virtual agent’s conversational piece as it holds the destination name in front. A little boy tried to talk to a different hologram, but it didn’t respond to his friendly “Hello!”.

So, is this an improvement over an information kiosk? In order for them to work, a human attendant has to activate them. Hmmm, I’m not sensing much help here, unless the real agent is just too tired to smile at any more passengers or repeat the same words over and over. The agency, L’Oeil du Chat, was tasked with modernizing Hall 40 of the airport. Maybe they watched “Blade Runner” one too many times. Judging by the commentaries on Yahoo News, this project isn’t going to be a raging success. I’m all for innovation, but really, this is the best that they could come up with? Maybe they didn’t have an unlimited budget to tap into the inspirational.
