Standing Up

When you see a politician willing to take a stand against injustice, then it’s news. It’s also sad that we consider this to be so, because it’s what their job entails. And yet, so few leaders do the good that people need in order to have a democratic country. Senator Eric Adams is a NY senator who is standing up against the blatant ignorance spouted by Geraldo Rivera and many others who blame a hoodie for a teen’s tragic death which is still awaiting a proper investigation in Florida. We all wonder if we’ll ever get the true story, while we also realize that ignorant stereotypes are tearing us apart.

We’ve been bombarded with irresponsible laws in this country, and it is becoming an epidemic. But it’s not just laws that are being manipulated, but people as well. Starbucks is in the middle of a war with NOM because the company has chosen to send a positive message against prejudice of gays. NOM sees it as some kind of moral attack and is trying to have Starbucks boycotted by their customers. In response, Sum Of Us has put together a card in support of Starbuck’s actions, and its supporters far outnumber (last count near 270,000) the boycotters. One more instance proving that morality isn’t narrow-minded.

More and more people are starting to stand up against injustice. We’ve got a long way to go, but at least we’re not alone in the effort. Journalists (citizen and otherwise) are telling the stories that we really need to be concerned about if we want a more just society. People are protesting about corruption around the world. Kids are starting projects to help the needy. Scientists are pushing back against the false words of corporate interest. As each person stands up, the holes in justice gradually become occupied by people who protect everything good and injustice lessens little by little. The social era is ramping up to become a powerful force of good against some dangerous voices of intolerance and ignorance.
