Well, this seemed like a timely question considering that today is that manliest of holidays: Father’s Day. Before I get started, a simple heartfelt message:
Happy Father’s Day, Dad!!!
Because this month also happens to be one of my “manly” celebratory months with Father’s Day and my husband’s birthday, it raised the question, “Who’s your Superman”?
We have all have men in our lives who make a difference each and every day in their own ways. They’re our fathers, husbands, uncles, brothers, sons, boyfriends, friends and more. Each hold pivotal positions in our lives, fighting against the dragons that life throws at them on a daily basis. I say this with the starry eyes of a woman, with only a little romanticism and other mushy stuff. Men are the swords, and women are the shields. They each have a role to play in this game called life.
Sidenote: I don’t think that I’ll ever understand how guys think! Frankly, their logic seems foreign and illogical to me (similar to what men say about women). But whenever I have a talk with one of them, I’m amazed that their perspective of the world sometimes works way better than anything that I can come up with. Women make things complicated, while men look to simplify in order to uncover the answer. Their way is straightforward, and avoids a lot of the BS that we women are good at. Who knows which way is better, because they’re both necessary to the yin and yang balance that I spoke of previously. You just can’t have one without the other.
Male roles in our society are varied, but are usually based in the offensive. They’ve been raised to believe that their place in society is that of the protector and all that it entails. They’re the hunters and the gatherers. They’re the knights in shining armor that go into battle to fight the good fight (whatever that means to them). We see their deeds everyday through the news, movies, or books. These strong heroes work tirelessly to take control of the world that they inhabit and make it safer for others. Sure, some men will try to take control of the world, but these are not the superman types of which I speak.
There will always be jobs that are associated with all things male, though some brave women have now entered into those worlds. I won’t list the jobs as I know that it’ll start an argument about gender bias. No, today I celebrate those things accomplished by men that have opened our world into the vast unknown. Here’s a few achievements by men:
- Launched into outer space
- Landed on the moon
- Broke the sound barrier
- Investigated the watery depths of our world
- Reached the North and South Poles
- Opened the lands of the world by sailing ships
- Opened networks that connects people around the world
- Brought science to new frontiers
- Uncovered ancient lands for modern eyes
This is only a short list of what men have accomplished, which has landed them onto the pages of history. But we also celebrate all of the modern roles that men hold today to ensure the world’s safety and prosperity. Men may have changed through the ages, but men will always be men. It’s in their DNA! They’re not perfect, but they’re ours.
My supermen are my husband and my father. They know how important they are to me, and what they’ve accomplished to make my life what it is today. They’re there when I need them. I won’t say more because the rest is private. But their hard work and devotion have made my life infinitely more happier, and I thank them for that. This day’s for all of you Supermen! Enjoy before we return to the regularly scheduled programming…
