Spoonplus – So That You Won’t Starve

I’m half Japanese, and it took me a while to learn to eat with a pair of chopsticks. When I first visited Japan as a little girl, my grandmother handed me a pair of chopsticks…to eat spaghetti. I don’t know if you know this, but spaghetti can’t be eaten gracefully with chopsticks. I know, because I was covered in sauce within the first two minutes as I hunted my food. At least I made my family laugh, which was why I later refused a fork. My grandmother had forgotten that I was raised in the USA until that moment, and had never seen a pair of chopsticks before. Yes, yes, laugh at the half-Asian girl. It’s all good because after years of practice, I sort of got the hang of it…unless I’m eating rice. Then it requires the shovel method that I see many Asians use. It’s good to know that even they have problems with their own utensils.

Well, Aïssa Logerot, a designer in Paris (France), may have saved some of us from starving in an Asian restaurant or home. The Spoonplus is a chopstick which fits into a spoon head, so it’s an eating utensil as well as a sauce reservoir, and a life saver. I guess that she also saw that dilemma that many of us encounter over these two sadistic pieces of wood. And I say, “Thank You, Aïssa”. We have a love-hate relationship with chopsticks, but still refuse to bow down to the challenge. Even those of us who are supposed to know how to use them.

And check out her site to see more of her functional designs. They’re pretty and clever.
