This is probably the most inspiring event that I have seen coming from a political world that normally doesn’t inspire:
Well, we all know about the various protests that are starting up against social inequalities caused by a pursuit of moneyed interests. What is new is an international political movement, the Pirate Party, that is gaining traction in several countries, and has now made a huge move into the Berlin state parliament. Amazingly enough, their votes equated to 9% of the popular vote (compared to a paltry 1.5% by the FDP pro-business party).
Their platform is humane and as hopeful as the international actions from a disenchanted populace who are speaking for a world that we all want. According to the official US branch based in Florida (Massachusetts is currently being set up), “We are the first political party created for the digital age. We believe in civil liberties, personal privacy from government, corporations and other individuals, IP reform, due process and open government.” And considering that many of these protesters are a large part of the 99% that is seeking to make their mark on the world against insurmountable odds, this particular movement should be equated to the Tea Party movement here in the US.
Their three main agenda points include:
- Reform of copyright law
- An abolished patent system
- Respect for the right to privacy
The Pirate Party is resident in over 40 countries, having been inspired by the Swedish parent movement in 2006, and has now made official in-roads into politics, expect to hear more from this organized movement that is being driven by the younger generation and other like-minded people who are looking for equality and openness. The mainstream media will probably continue to use a more condescending tone when speaking of this youth movement, but it shouldn’t ignore the fact that they are among the most educated and most motivated for social change. Status quo is definitely being challenged. Other like minds can and should join forces to help effect changes that we sorely need.

And a reason why these types of actions are getting louder: Whatever Happened to the American Left?
p.s. And now I’m embarrassed at my ignorant tweet about Pirate Talking last week. And yet hugely happy because this is awesome and inspiring! Sorry and congratulations!
