Saving the Hidden

Some people dream big. And some people act big. Responsibility belongs to each and every one of us. It moves our daily thoughts and actions (usually). But for some, it becomes a mission that takes on particular urgency when there are those involved who aren’t driven by responsibility. This is one of those cases.

Scott Wallace is a writer, photographer, and journalist who has spent his life working with conflict and its repercussions. Now, he is taking on the safety of the few indigenous tribes who have been living in isolation from the outside world. But now that resources are becoming harder to gather, those of us in the outside world are encroaching on territories to gather much-needed resources without thinking of the repercussion to those who have lived peacefully and naturally. The battle between protection of us and them has led to the typical posturing of both sides, but no actual protection to our true responsibility. We’ve used up our resources. Power doesn’t give us the right to plunder those of others. This is our warning that we need to take our responsibilities much more seriously. Life is not a game of Risk. Life isn’t even a game. It’s reality, and it’s time is now.

Voices are angry at our irresponsible actions. They’re rising in pitch and immediacy. And they’re out there saving the hidden, so that its purity can remain intact. The people do it because our leaders won’t. This might be Utopia to someone. It’s what we’re all searching for, so why would we destroy it so thoughtlessly?

Find out more about the indigenous uncontacted tribe in Peru that people are fighting to protect from the greed and corruption of our world at National Geographic.

Frankly, I would love to know that there is a Utopia out there to build towards. Our hands already destroy enough. It’s time we all used our hands to build and nurture.
