It’s so cost prohibitive that it’s simply not worth it! That’s the typical talking point for why we should not pursue green technology. And yet, all around us are the reasons that we should:
- Limited (easy) resources remaining;
- Rising costs to extract them;
- Increased pollution;
- Detrimental environmental impacts;
- Stewardship responsibility.
A new solar power plant in Seville, Spain is putting its money where it’s mouth is. A collaboration between Abu Dhabi’s Masdar and Spain’s SENER, this venture is called Torresol Energy and it’s mission is the “reinventing of solar power”. The Gemasolar power plant is located in the sunniest region of Spain, and is expected to produce 110 GWh/year. They will be able to generate 6,500 hours of electrical power, which is 1.5 to 3 times more than current renewable energies, to power 25,000 homes and reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions by 30,000 tons per year. This is what we accomplish when we ignore modern wisdom and trust our true needs.
