How Precious Our Dreams

I am pushing the boundaries of my writing past the technical content of old, because I’m finally answering the call from inside. As a technical communicator, I wrote content that assisted and instructed. Every word was straightforward, but it didn’t contain the words that I wanted to write. Of course, I write to help make other people’s lives easier. I learned as much as I could about as much as I was able to, covering a diverse range of subjects. Being curious really helps when you’re a writer. But for me, there’s more now. There’s a feeling, finally.

The words that I put down here are the words that I’ve been wanting to write for a long time. I have words like this in my personal collection, but have never released them for anyone’s eyes but my own. And then one day, I realized that if I want ME to be happy, then I’m going to have to take a chance and get over the discomfort. For some writers, the spotlight beckons. For others, they’d rather hide under every available rock to avoid any light. But the one thing that they all do is put down words, in different rhymes and different forms, in order to create a dream.

Dreams come in all shapes and sizes, and they mean different things to different people. But they give us that feeling to push farther, fly higher, and open our eyes wider to the possibilities.

It would be great if everyone got the importance of our dreams. But not everyone will. What is important to me and you, might not even register with those who are most closest to us. That might be because they’ve seen us at our best and our worst, and think that they know who we are. But who we are changes, and grows as we get closer to our dreams. We become so focused on that dream, that little else might register. It’s all we talk about, and it’s all that we’ve become. It will take time for those who know us best to get to know this new you. Until then, we have to learn patience and ignore the prick of pain that we feel when they react in ways that we’re not expecting. It’s not personal, it’s just them getting their bearings around us because we threw in a new curve.

Once you put your dreams out there to share with others, an even more amazing thing will happen. People that we don’t even know will open up the communication channels because they recognize a kindred spirit. It’s these people that will help steer us during those rough seas until we see the calm waters. Most likely, our closest supporters will be there in those waters, waiting for us to appear so that we can move forward together once again. In a larger and stronger collective. Isn’t that what dreams are all about?

Words of wisdom from one of my heros, Chris Guillebeau. He always seems to write about a topic just when you need it the most!
