EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) put out a new tutorial that clearly shows how tenuous our rights to free speech actually are. If we aren’t fighting to keep them open for us all, they will disappear. The latest legal moves, like SOPA and Protect IP, have so many visible bear traps that will catch unsuspecting and innocent people who are exercising their rights to free speech. If we’re going to close our eyes against the injustice and let it go on, then we will deserve what is happening to us. People in other countries don’t have a small percentage of the freedoms that we in the western world enjoy. We don’t know what it’s like to be under someone’s thumb 24/7-365, nor should we want to find out.
Today’s Thanksgiving Day, a time to give thanks for the bounty that we have. It’s the perfect day to remember that the bounty isn’t ever free, and I’m not talking in numbers and cents.
