I am still a huge fan of Lyoto Machida, no matter what others say about his fighting style. I like a fighter who thinks before he moves. It may seem boring to some, but I see it like a game of physical chess. When you see the thoughts racing through their heads, it’s pretty amazing to watch considering the explosive circumstances that they’re in.
I’ve also been a student of martial arts (Choy Li Fut) for 3 years, although I have since had to put it on the back burner because free time is something I no longer have in abundance. I love and miss it, and still plan to pursue it on my own just to remember that feeling of pure action. The physical movement of any sport is something that I consider to be a thing of beauty.
But sometimes, even I can’t look at the devastation caused when things become too violent. It’s hard to appreciate a good game or event when it’s marred by the screaming calls for more blood by an audience who has gone rabid. Since I’ve been on the receiving end of kicks and punches, I have a little understanding of the pain that men go through in order to prove their masculinity. We fans need to tone down our expectations. Continue reading →

I stumbled onto some amazing art through a circuitous route starting with iheartmyart -> Gaks’ Blog -> Conjunto Universo’s Flickr page. I seriously love what Conjunto Universo creates using such simple clean lines along with pristine color and shading in order to show the vibrancy of being human. Absolutely gorgeous lines that show the power of the pen. Be sure to check out all of the images on Flickr and Conjunto Universo’s (La Costa Continua) Tumblr blog. They really are beautiful and human.
I just had to show this fax cover letter from Dave Foster Wallace to Harper’s Bazaar magazine. As a writer, or any creator for that matter, your creation is pretty much as fragile as your most precious treasure. Word placement, quirky punctuation, it’s all a personal stamp that shows the writer’s personality, thoughts, and intentions. Many times, things are not used “properly” as according to rules that we learn in school, but that is all part of the creative process, and creators are quite protective of their works.
This letter struck me as hilarious, because he very obviously intended for the work to be presented as it was created, rules be damned, and there would be consequences if they didn’t abide by his wishes (read the last sentence and the footnote for a chuckle – love his signature). It’s frustrating when your original content is modified to fit into some system rule. And it’s why writers are always so heartbroken, when they get that letter from the editor with requested changes that will modify the original creation. Sometimes, words are more than words.
p.s. If you haven’t already, take some time to go through the Letters of Note site. There is a lot of incredible history that looks into the minds of some of the best and brightest. It’s a completely fascinating voyage!
p.s. Thanks for dealing with my rants today, everyone. I guess that endless Christmas advertising and marketing is already taking its toll on me. Especially since it started before Thanksgiving. @_@
This joyful (not!) image is a glimpse of how hard my Norton has been working lately in corraling my spam. I get that we’re in a down-turned market. I get that people need to make money. I can almost understand when your marketing department gets desperate to bring back their market shares (not that this shows legitimate marketing schemes). But seriously, this is inexcusable. All of these “unbelievable” opportunities that can be yours if you just click on the embedded link which will seek to steal my information, my money, and my well-being. Instead of going after online pirates through misguided and dangerously broad legislations like SOPA and Protect IP, why aren’t our governments going after these frauds who steal a whole lot more than bits of money. Last I checked, the government was still supposed to be working for the people. Continue reading →

This one single infographic by Frugal Dad shows some of the truth behind the too big global company, Walmart, that is rapidly taking over the planet. I’m showing an excerpt from the infographic because the whole thing needs to be read to understand the myths that Big Business throws at us when we try to stifle their growth. If any of us thought that they play fairly, or that they flipped over a new leaf with their green efforts, well, it looks like we’ve all been fooled. Here’s a couple of recent stories that got me more than a bit worried that we’re chasing after the wrong boogiemen:
Yes, again I’m showing a personal bias against companies I see that are getting too big and killing competition. It’s an indicator that we are clearly not practicing in free market capitalism (haven’t been for decades). People chase after Amazon as a competition killer, but one look at this graphic shows that Amazon is doing no where near the level of devastation that Walmart’s inflicting. If we really want a free market back, then we need to rein in out-of-control Big Money which is now reaching into our government and law. Only then, can we restart the building process before it can’t be fixed any longer. No matter how any argues for or against this information, it does make you think, doesn’t it?
My love affair with advertising just slammed to a stop with just one ad campaign. Grey Worldwide just launched a campaign for shoe brand, Deichmann Graceland. What do you think? Needless to say, I won’t be linking to either company because this has got to be the most insensitive, thoughtless, inflammatory, antiquated drivel I’ve seen in a while. And that’s saying a lot in today’s world of in your face advertising. Take the line, “Men over 180cm earn 10% more money”, which implies that a woman that tall will have equal windfalls. Last time I checked, a woman that tall is considered a freak of nature that threatens most people’s comfort zone. Trust me, when you’re taller than everyone around you, and get called nicknames like Godzilla, it doesn’t lead to admiration and compensation for the receiver.
Frankly, Grey Worldwide, I would like to see all of your male executives wear these heels for the same amount of time that you expect women to wear them. I don’t care how “sexy” they make a female look, because I think that they’re torture devices. If you want to see just how sexy the results are, then look at a female foot that’s been crammed into these “pedal corsets” for extended periods of time. All you’ll see are gnarled toes that belie the external beauty of those shoes (don’t even get me started about cost). If you really want to sell your brand, at least do it in the 21st century and stop selling myths. I’d like to think that more of us admire the inner person rather than the external shell, no matter how tall that shell is. You remember the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, don’t you?
– Thanks DesignTaxi, for warning us that some people still have a long way to go towards modernity.
Did you know that passion has such beautiful sounds? I’m not talking about THAT, so you can stop smirking now. Though even the sound of that passion is something that has a beauty that drives us to seek it.
No, what I’m talking about is listening to a poet when she speaks. I stumbled on Sarah Kay‘s new Ted Talk, How Many Lives Can You Live?, and fell in love with words all over again. Take the time out to hear how she speaks, because she has a way of describing her world that draws you in and delights you with new discoveries. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to have that kind of confidence at her age, as I don’t even have that kind of confidence now and I’m much older. But her words resonated with me, because I’m like her. There’s so much that I want to do still, and I’m like a kid in a candy store thinking about possibilities. It’s possibilities that pushed me to learn to fly, write the true words that are in me, pursue a love of creativity, be brave in choosing to embark on a different path. To pursue true love in all of its forms.
Like Sarah, I admire other lives because they are doing things that I’d love to experience. Traveling the world to experience different cultures, or floating in outer space and looking down on our planet, or perhaps to climb a mountain that has never seen footsteps. Whenever I see someone do something, anything inspiring, all I can think is, “Good for you! It must be an amazing feeling, and I’m glad that you’re experiencing it.”
In a rushed world, we’ve lost the ability to ponder about possibilities that don’t directly affect our tangible lives. Rushing about as we pursue money, position, or a small little fist full of power has become the norm that we won’t escape. Losing our dreams means so much more than we realize. Dreams make us pursue the good stuff. We need more good stuff. If you want to feel how that passion sounds, watch Sarah, often. She pulls from deep within you that feeling that starts dreams on their path to reality. Such beauty is rare, and must be treasured for its purity. We need to listen to the Sarahs of this world because they have a piece of the puzzle that we desperately need to acknowledge as precious and necessary.
p.s. When I grow up, I want to be just like Sarah. Seriously, I’ve spent time listening to many of her other breathtaking words, and she is…simply astounding.
Honestly, how can you not love a moment of whimsy and humor in your day. German artist Timm Schneider had this thought in a moment of “urban intervention” when he added googly eyes onto everyday objects and brought them to life in his project, They Live. Personalities shine through these eyes which give us a glimpse into the soul of the object. Sure, you can disagree that inanimate objects don’t have a soul, but I feel they must because sometimes the most innocuous item can bring a moment of joy into our lives because we actually see them.
I love my coffee, and now I love this coffee even more because I giggled at the inquisitive stare that it’s giving me as it stares up at me in a moment of wonder. You can almost hear it thinking, “Whoa, who is this person who keeps sipping from my soul? I think she likes me, because she’s holding me so securely. Does she know that I’m so happy that she’s happy?”
– Thanks, My Modern Met, for this moment of joy! And thanks Timm for your sense of humor, because I seriously love the way you look at things.
This image named Eros by the Spanish painter, Fran Rechaca, is sublime! After spending some more time on Zealous.co, I found this amazing artist who paints mythology, fairytales, and life with a strength that can be seen in each powerful paint stroke.
He did an interview with The Art of Man magazine (first article on page) which is very enlightening as to the struggles that he’s encountered because of his portrayals of the male figure. Honestly, I don’t know what these galleries are thinking to reject Fran’s art when it tells more of a story about humanity than any violent or objectified piece ever will. All of his paintings are simply gorgeous, and embody a spirit that connects with our own. To me, the male figure is equally beautiful in its musculature, angles, power, and strength.
Artists with true vision into their subjects are a gift to us all. That truth opens the inner dialogue from within the subject, so that it connects with our own inner dialogue into a wonderful conversation about everything beautiful. The human figure is much more than an object. It’s a reminder that we have a lot more going on under the surface that’s equally important.

All around the country, the Occupy movement has been trying to work around ever increasing barriers that are censoring their voices. Censorship is becoming a part of our everyday world now, approved under the guise of protection. But just who is being protected and why? It certainly isn’t the people, who have been the receivers of the violence meted out by external forces. Even the term ‘occupy’ indicates strong action, and yet those who practice it are doing so with a delicacy that isn’t evident in the word itself.
I started this post with the tweet above because I’ve actually met the man that this article covers. On one of the earlier days at the San Diego Civic Center, I bumped into him and had a conversation with him and another friend of his. The reason why I reacted to this tweet is that this man, Curtis, is really a remarkably articulate and passionate man who believes in this cause with all of his heart. It showed in our exchanged words, and only strengthened my support of this movement. Curtis gave me the strength to use my own skills to push for change by highlighting the inadequacies, as I’ve been doing here and at the Urban Times (see the links on the books and more tab if you’re curious).
For all of its inconsistencies from encampment to encampment, the one consistency is the people’s belief. It doesn’t take much to understand what they want, and to want this movement to work. Because, clearly we need something to work to fix the world that we live in. Many don’t understand the message, but unless you’ve been standing still and REALLY looking closely at the world around us, you probably won’t see what so many already see. The division between 99% and 1% is not the true focus, but merely a symptom of the problem. The collective symptoms all lead to the true focus, which is that there is a lot to fix in this world and we need to administer a cure to all of the ills that we’re suffering from. Continue reading →

Our censorship fight with the US Congress is far from over, as they continue to attempt to break the Internet with legislations driven by crony capitalism in the US and abroad. Though SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) have been pulled back for now, more continue to follow them. Now, we have to contend with ACTA(more) and TPP(2), which are international attempts to censor and control the Internet for the sake of commerce. And if that's not enough, now there's CISPA (more).
Go to EFF.org to keep up with the legal news that impacts our world and its technology. The greed won't stop, so we have to stay vigilant as well. Especially now that lobbyists are admitting out loud that they expect to be rewarded for their "contributions": Read it on TorrentFreak
