Episodes Against Child Slavery

Designers Against Child Slavery collaborated with The Blind Project on the second annual art exhibit and silent auction to support the movement to stop child sex trafficking in Southeast Asia. The show, Episodes, was the culmination of a year’s worth of work by a diverse group of talented artists from around the world who were chosen to depict one of three themes: Coercion, Enslavement, and Restoration. The images are so beautiful, and yet tell such a powerful story of an underground world where few go. We’ve seen the documentaries, but understand little of the impact on the victims. It’s exhibitions like this for amazing organizations that work to remove the bad from this world that shows that the beauty isn’t just in a stroke of color, but in the desire for change. So beautiful and compelling.

This particular piece by Rob Shields drew me to it because of the intensity of emotion amid the melancholy of defeat, while being wrapped in a package of beauty meant to entice against a tableau of gentility. There are so many more that are equally entrancing, so visit either site to find more details. So glad that I found this on Behance Network. It will be amazing to see what next year brings.

Alice’s Wall of Wonders

I love this image! The depiction of a sleeping innocent juxtaposed with the playful alertness of a child free from the trials of school is adorable. Alice Pasquini is a Rome-based visual artist who works on any paper or structure, creating street art that is so full of lively strength. Color is definitely a key element of all of her images, as they give her images a magical dreamlike quality that breathes of joy, excitement, and love. Take a look at some of her other wall images at her blog, and you’ll see what I mean. If you want to take some of her work home, well, it looks like she has also partnered in a graphic novel project, Vertigine, with Melissa P.

Check out more images of AliCè’s work on her Flickr page! She travels to a lot of countries and leaves her joyous mark.

Thanks again, My Modern Met, for this amazing artist. Her work simply makes you smile!

Culture Not Costume

I just saw this campaign against racism being run by the Students Teaching Against Racism in Society (STARS), a student organization at Ohio University. It’s a poster campaign that is currently in work and a great one to support. Here are just two of the posters available that cover some common racial constructs we all recognize. Every ethnicity has a racial image that people love to exploit. It’s disrespectful and limiting, and people are getting tired of the presumption offered by such gross characterizations. People are individuals and not comical characters to snicker at.

Send STARS an email at ohioustars@gmail.com if you have any questions or are interested in using them, and check out this blog for the latest information about the poster campaign. Today’s youth are just full of amazing inspiration and creativity. Great job, STARS, for a powerful campaign against racial profiling. It’s a lesson that’s long overdue!

Signs Of New

The images are painful and yet hopeful. A contradiction that permeates through our world and our lives.

We all remember the terrifying sights of an ocean threatening a country roiling through seismic upheavals like never before seen. It’s been 7 months since that catastrophe threatened Japan, and terrified the world (six months from beginning to end image). But even after such calamities, man continues to show his strengths and fortitude to come through it and move forward. I found these sad and moving images thanks again to a My Modern Met‘s post. The Kyodo News released images of the before and after evidence, and it hurts yet gives us all hope. The loss is immense, and the lessons won’t be forgotten by any of us, but this is what we can do when we work together towards a common goal!

Gambatte Japan! The signs of new show how a society should function, and we can all learn something from your strength. Your beauty shines through.

p.s. To the many countries who are also suffering from these types of natural and man-made disasters, please know that you are on our minds and in our hearts as well.

Freedom Comes With Words

Only when things become too much do we go into action to find a fix. Sometimes the cause is natural, but many times it’s man-made. And man does eventually find a way to fight when the moment is at its darkest point. Here are some who are finding ways to bring to light what others won’t see using the most fitting words for the time:

Frank Miller Is Back

It’s a tough book, but the topic is also pretty tough. Frank Miller is once again at his best covering the conflict that man brings about, and the unintended consequences from acts of violence that move people in surprising ways. The story for Holy Terror is pure chaos that only comes about because of inexplicable actions that man does to one another (all in the name of the divine – in this case) and the repercussions that result. You’re floundering in the story’s emotions because it is depicting an event that can only make you feel that way. And while Frank calls it propaganda against the 9/11 attacks, it is also a powerful nod to how comics can illuminate a scenario through graphic characterization that brings it in your face. Subtle in conversation while still being excruciating in visual action. This is a story about America, and yet every country has similar ones because humans pretty much are the same in general instincts.

Here’s a review by Forbidden Planet UK, if you’re curious to find out more. But I can attest to the unique art that only Frank can accomplish. Beauty found in the grotesque, and hope found in the cinders of destruction. Life as we know it.

There is no happy ending in the common sense, because it captures a few moments in time. And time continue to tick after the last scene of this story. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. But we can predict the future by our current actions. Food for thought…

Thought For The Day – The Internet Is Essential

I just saw a post on PSFK that was eye-opening and yet not at all surprising: There was more data transmitted over the Net in 2010 than the entire history up until 2010 together! The numbers that Kirk is quoting is so mind-boggling, and shows the importance of the Net to our world. And it’s also imperative to realize that the connections we make today are still only made by a small fraction of all of the people living on this planet. So, we need to protect this most vital asset to humankind and make sure that everyone has access to it equally.

Here’s the talk where this thought came from – Kirk Skaugen from Intel talks about :

(completely technical but there are some amazingly enlightening facts)

How Do You Code?

How does a person learn to code without going through the trials and tribulations of learning to understand the code. Well, how about approaching it as a game where interactive features and recognition of successful codes are the foundation for the learning process? Codecademy is a new start-up created in August 2011 by co-founders Ryan Bubinski and Zach Sims, who chose to use their previous experiences and knowledge to help learn the world to code. They know that the 21st century world will require a knowledge of coding, and want to help others get there. Gaming is a prevalent part of our lives, and can be a great motivator for visualizing problems and coming up with creative solutions. It can even help us see an event from another perspective. Codecademy is focused on Javascript because of its straightforward and easier nature, and is having some great success so far with over 200,000 users in the first 72 hours of their launch. I’m keeping an eye to see if they expand their offerings. The first few lessons were completely painless, straightforward, and uplifting. What a great educational tool!

A Flutter

I found this image called Flutter by Jason Leveque (also known as Stuntkid) on This Isn’t Happiness blog by accident. Of course, this accident was all instigated by My Modern Met’s blog about the Top 10 Tumblr blogs to Creatively Inspire You. It just goes to show you that perseverance and curiosity go hand in hand, and pays off every time! Now, I’m off to explore Jason’s art more thoroughly since I’ve obviously missed some of his creations!  Can’t wait to see what else he’s done!  : )

What Is Your Perfect World?

With all of the talk of remaking our world (at least in my mind and a multitude of others), I constantly wonder what the perfect world would look like. Not necessarily Utopia, though that would also be wonderful. In my mind, the world takes on hues of every shade and luminosity. But no matter how hard I imagine, almost every time, nature manages to outdo even what my head can come up with.

Take, for instance, this image of a terraced rice field in Yunnan, China by Thierry Bornier as presented on National Geographic. The colors and the intricate lattice work of the terraces make up such a sublime image that also reminds you of those fill-in-the-color puzzles we played with as children. Whenever we are in need of a kick start, then all we have to do is look at the world around us. Whether it is natural or man-made, there are rhythms that speak to our souls which allow us to find inspiration for creation. Continue reading
