Love For A Stranger

Everyday, exotic animals are abducted or poached from their environments to serve a huge global black market of buyers and sellers who see them simply as business opportunities or things to collect. It seems that there is no limit to what some will do in order to obtain something rare. Shamavu is a baby gorilla who is luckier than many of his counterparts. He is only the 4th baby gorilla to be saved in 2011 from poachers by the dedicated men and women who protect these rare creatures within their natural home. At a price of up to $40,000 for just one of these defenseless babies, the trade attracts dangerous people who are willing to harm man and beast in order to get their profits. It’s unknown just how many animals are taken each year, though we see the devastation left behind from the violence wrought by man upon beast.

Around the world, the animals that are supposed to be protected by us are harmed by human activities including poaching, mutilation, habitat destruction, and so much more. We still have a long way to go in taming our own wild instincts, when greed and corruption become involved. This battle is only one in a long-standing war that pits man against nature and man against man. Considering that we are still fighting amongst ourselves for respect and welfare, it seems miraculous that there are people who care about stopping the atrocities we visit upon nature. We owe these people a great debt because they see the big picture: we all co-exist on a single planet and rely on one another. At least Shamavu has people who love him, though he had to lose too much in order to find this out.

It’s Monday

This seemed like the perfect picture to start out the week. Some days, we’re all clutching the same branch and huddled together with a dazed look on our faces. Made you laugh!

Man As Heroic

I came across this image from National Geographics a few days ago and have been mesmerized by the play of sunlight around the river bushman. The image gives him such a luminescent quality that he appears heroic and supernatural. It also reminds me that we humans really are the stewards of our world, and this might be how we appear to creatures smaller and less powerful than us. Something to think of whenever we do something that impacts the world around us.

I saw this Pop-tarts commercial for the first time yesterday and was completely charmed by the simple message that makes you smile. Just use your senses to find your joy, and watch your life become colored by what you find. Pretty sweet, huh? You should try it! I know that I will.

Using A Pen And An Imagination

Wow, I don’t think that I have ever seen anyone draw quite like this before?! Chan Hwee Chong is a Faber Castell pen user, but his usage is probably the most unique that I’ve ever seen. Watch the video above to see what I mean. To have the dexterity and the visualizing capability to predict each individual stroke in order to complete the final piece is something extraordinary, in my book. Slight permutations of each following line manages to create the image that he seeks. HOW??? His completed creations include: Girl with Pearl Earring, Van Gogh self portrait, and the Mona Lisa. I am simply in awe at his combination of talents that allow him to see an image before he draws it.

Marketing Does NOT Fit Everywhere

The disconnect is alive and well between business and life. I really think that business people actually have to turn it off once in a while so that they can remember the human aspect of interactions. Life is NOT one big marketing event. We are not products to be launched and accepted by an audience. As a matter of fact, in today’s world, the product audience doesn’t seem to much care for anything with any level of sustained fervor. That’s why marketers and advertisers are always looking for the next slick campaign with which to peddle their wares. But not everything fits into the “wares” category. There is a large portion of the world-wide interactions that have little to do with the limited scope and cycle that accompany typical product launches.

The Occupy Together movements that are happening around the world are one such social interaction. And that’s the key: social. I see repeated (well-meaning, I hope) attempts at “helping those poor misguided souls” to better attain their goals. But perhaps those who want to provide these lessons, which work well in a business world of limited focus, are not seeing the big picture that has an underlying deeply focused message. And to get to this message, it means taking off the blinders that are necessary for working in a two-dimensional world so that you can see that third dimension: PEOPLE and their well-being. When Your Technology Answers

Siri is still a baby in the eyes of technology, but she’s one with a quirky personality. There’s already a blog about the unpredictable answers that she gives to your question. I can tell that I already like her personality. Snarky, like any personal assistant should be right? Just kidding. But this should fit in perfectly with my AI studies through Stanford online (loving this class!) – found on DesignTaxi post -> Shit That Siri Says

A Punk Singer On Kickstarter

Powerful role models help us aspire to reach into the stratosphere of our dreams. Some are introverted, and some are so completely extroverted that their presence is like a magnet. Kathleen Hanna is one such riot grrrl who believes in the power of females, and is outspoken about the subject of feminism.

It’s hard to imagine unless you’ve been walking in a woman’s shoes (no pumps for me), but every woman has been on the receiving end of inequality. And every woman responds in different manners to that thumb that threatens to push her into the ground. The woman you look at today is the result of all the pressures, expectations, and roadblocks that are put up throughout their lives (yes, that goes for both sexes, but the results are unique to each individual). I always tell myself to never give in to any expectation that isn’t your own, unless you’re willing to live with the consequences. Kathleen goes much further by blowing expectations with her own actions as a life-long activist with influences on our creative culture. Continue reading

Tribes Connect For Change

Seth Godin is a guru to many who love his blog and books on marketing in the 21st century through empathy and connection. He believes in finding a calling instead of finding a job. His message is clear. Fitting in isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. But challenging a comfort zone can be (although it also not easy or common). Being a person who sticks out like a sore thumb in status quo is actually a signal that you might be the type of person who wants to affect good change for a better world.  Continue reading

Home On The Free Internet Range

Jonathan Zittrain believes that the Internet is actually made up of random acts of kindness, and he’s proving it in the video. No matter how crazy the requests or ideas, you can find people who believe in it with you and will help your idea along. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of. He contends that there will always be people out there who will answer the Internet “bat call” to action for something, no matter how far fetched simply because there are people out there who feel the same way as the person who sent out the call.
