And Ideology Once Again Strikes

At this point, I’m not sure what to call this. In response to the “We are the 99%” cry, another movement has come out to counter what they believe is only rhetoric. The “We are the 53%” movement has been started, saying that they are the taxpayers who believe that you get what you want through your own hard work, and nothing is given to you for free. And they’re not footing your share of the bill. Their motto is” Those of us who pay for those of you who whine about all of that…or that…or whatever. It amazes me that people truly believe that disrespect of anything that doesn’t fit into their own ideology is the most efficient way to launch a counter argument. Connection Breeds Innovation

People are always talking about whether the onslaught of information is causing overload in our brains. Well, on one hand, we do have to weigh what is useful and what isn’t. But sometimes, even the most inconsequential piece of information or image can actually cause something to trigger in our heads that says, “Now, what a minute! Don’t throw that out just yet…” Continue reading

Streets That Speak Wise Words

You don’t have to look far to find wise words that teach. They aren’t only found in books. They aren’t only spoken by old wise men. They don’t always come from those who have higher education. Wise words come from observation. Look around and you’ll find them everywhere. Even in the most unlikely of places… – from streetartutopia (check out their site – it’s got amazing art)

Whimsically Adorable

We are all children at heart, and sometimes that is what it takes to come up with creative genius that makes you smile in wonder. Aleksei Bitskoff is one such artist, and his drawings remind me of some of my most precious childhood memories. He has a fondness for creatures and monsters, as noted by his illustrations for a new book that he co-illustrated. The image above, entitled “Me and You” is from a picture book which won third place in the MacMillan Children’s Picture Book Award. Take a look at his blog to see more of his whimsical adorableness. – found on inspirefirst post

A Tone Makes Or Breaks

The one thing that everyone is learning from the various occupations throughout the world is that it is really diverse. And no where is it more evident than during any conversation, offline or online. Of course, having any conversation is difficult if those actively involved are distracted by their own emotions or even beliefs. Having these makes us human, but having these can sometimes be a detriment if you’re letting them lead your actions.

Following the conversations that are happening online can be daunting. Millions of voices are shouting their opinions in a cacophony of blurbs that only seem to pollute the dialogue because they are putting up obstacles for finding a constructive path to follow. This is why I’m always saying that you have to have a firm grip of your inner dialogue before you can participate in an outer dialogue with an open channel. Hatred towards a particular type or ideology is the one shackle that we humans possess in abundance. It closes our minds, and allows emotions to drive our actions, sometimes with disrespectful or disastrous consequences. Continue reading

Fall Is Here

My favorite time of the year is here and things are starting to look beautifully tinted in the hues of a glorious sunset. The orange is so vibrant that it pierces your senses and covers your vision in a cocoon of warmth. Everything that is good about this season can be felt in the air:

  • the nip of a cooling wind
  • the subdued rays of sunlight that cover the world like a soft mist
  • the excitement of approaching holiday cheers
  • the spookiness of my most favorite time, Halloween
  • the reawakening of artists who are in their element during this time of year

So, welcome, Fall! I missed you so much. Isn’t that shot by Melissa on National Geographic’s site the perfect compliment for autumnal beauty?

Another Company Gets It

New Balance is the latest company to get on board with reusing recycled materials. newSKY is their brand of shoes that is made from 95% recycled PET plastic bottles. The trend with New Balance started with their NB Minimus brand, where they were focused in giving the wearer a natural feeling of not wearing any shoes. Just like on those gorgeous summer days, when your running around the yard in your bare feet.

Taking their cue from that design, New Balance took the characteristics of the new material into account when they created the environmentally friendly design, so that they could maintain the minimalist approach and embrace sustainability. It’s pretty fascinating to find out how they managed to reform plastic bottle bits into the material that is used on the majority of the shoe. But it doesn’t end with the production of the shoes, because the tagline for newSKY,  “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” says it all. When the user is finished wearing these shoes, New Balance wants you to donate your gently worn shoes so that they cycle can continue and garbage is reduced.

It’s great to see more larger companies coming out with sustainable design. Every small step from one of us becomes one more healthy spin for our planet. It’s a win-win for us all!

Capitalism Vs Artistry

It sounds like an interesting meeting of the minds. What would happen if you had a conversation between a school (like the Norwegian School of Economics) and a group of street artists. Two groups of people from completely divergent sections of society commenting on a social mechanism that impacts both worlds equally and yet unequally. From July to August of 2011, these artists painted the white walls of the school with their thoughts about the impact of capitalism on the world. Once the art was completed, they were then invited to talk about those thoughts with the school’s leading economists.

_capitalism? allows for the streets paved with gold to challenge the streets painted in multi-tones, to see if they can understand how the other thinks. To see how the world of color can co-exist with the world of black and white. This project was brought by the collaboration between NHH and the Nuart Festival.

A Radiant Child Is A Tribute

My eyes were transfixed on this emotional image painted by David Flores. Branded Arts asked for a tribute for New York graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The moodiness of the colors and with the geometric compilation of his expression makes for a mesmerizing piece. Add to that, a photo taken at a unique angle, and this is two works in one. This is another example of the powerful imagery that street art is capable of portraying, making it more than important in my history book of the arts. – found through My Modern Met
