Well, everyone wanted a message from the Occupy Wall Street / Occupy Together movements. Here you are. It pretty thoroughly delineates the issues that we all face as a nation, and as as world. You really can’t listen to the litany of misdeeds accomplished by those in charge in all industries, and not be moved.

You wanted a message. Well, here’s your message people. Hope you’re all listening.

Being forwarded on Occupy Together forums. Find one near your city and make your voice heard! Or simply make your voice heard in any way that you can. Blog it. Talk about it. Respect it.

Memories Of Japan

I was going through my tweet timeline when I stumbled on a question and answer put out by National Geographic Traveler. Amy Alipio answered a question with the following, “A7. Love how in any Japanese store they’ll wrap your purchase in exquisite paper, even its something like deodorant.” And she opened up a whole slew of memories that brought a smile to my face, even after dealing with the tough times and news that we all are dealing with.

She managed to trigger a sudden desire to write about what I miss from a country that I haven’t been back to in years. If you follow me, then you already know that I am half-Japanese. It’s just one part of my background that I cherish, mostly because it’s a time that had the biggest impact on me when I was growing up. I had spent my youth traveling with my parents whenever my dad got a new duty station from the Navy. You get used to the moving, though you never get used to the pieces of yourself that you leave behind. It’s different from traveling, because the permanence of staying feels real so you still cling to that place as home. Even though you know that it’s temporary. But for all of the upheaval, I wouldn’t trade those experiences because I got to immerse myself into where I was living.

Japan was more than a home to me, simply because I have a part of my family there. They live in the cities of Tokyo and Yokohama, which were very close to where we had lived in Yokosuka. I spent over a fifth of my life there, but I have a lifetime full of memories from that short time.

This is a picture of me and my cousin Miyuki taken way back when (I think I was 8 years old)

What A Great Start To The Week – Lost Footage Found Again

We heard the news that changed our lives forever on 10/5/2011. It wasn’t great news (see 10/5 post below). It was awful because we lost a great inspiration for us all. Whatever anyone says about him personally, the man changed our world forever. His words at the Stanford Commencement address spoke to us even more about never losing our dreams. His story spoke to us because he took the hard road that had so many holes. And he came through them because he never lost sight of his dreams. Continue reading

Voices Heard

Hmmm, I just realized that I got this a little wrong. It’s happening around the world. Which makes it even more amazing!

How often do you see this happen in a city? And how long has it been since you’ve seen an image of so many people working together repeated all over the country, in cities everywhere. This is what it feels like to come together for something that we all can agree on. It’s hard to see in the faces above, but the diversity is evident in the movie below that was done by the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective. This group represents all of us that are part of the 99%. This is the place where confrontation isn’t necessary, because divisive topics aren’t pertinent to what everyone agrees on. Yes, the specifics cover a spectrum of concerns, but the underlying sentiment is that everyone wants the country that they believe in. It really is no simpler than that. So, put away the hate and the anger for a moment, and simply admire the image of all of our voices being heard at the same time. You can’t get something much more inspirational than that. We are joined. A beautiful way to end a week.

Faces Unseen

These are the faces of those that go unseen, even when they are right in front of us. It’s not a comfortable subject for most people, because those unseen masses leave them with mixed feelings. We want to believe that they quit all by themselves, but we will never now their stories unless we hear them from their mouths. And yet so many people don’t want to do that because it means that they have to stop what they’re doing.

A group of French street artists didn’t want to ignore them, so they painted tributes to those nameless people in the Muse Urbain (City Museum, where these men live) who aren’t acknowledged by society unless it with disdain or disgust. Artisme painted their faces on the walls of the streets where they live, exposed to the elements. Just as nature deteriorates our outer structures, so too will these homages be affected by the time and weather. These artists didn’t want us to turn our heads. They wanted us to see every hard line that tells a story about that person’s life. They’ve even written something underneath each portrait, but they wrote so minutely that the observer is forced to come in close to read the words. By coming close, they are then forced to see every line, every texture, every expression up close and personal. Something most people wouldn’t do for a real homeless person.

Life is tough, but people have a fragility about them that is hidden under layers. No one can claim that this isn’t true, because if they are, then they’re just denying it. But within us all is that voice that tells us to reach out when someone calls for help. These men’s calls are silent, but they are now being heard. This is a way for them to be acknowledged as a part of us all. They are connected to someone somewhere. They have family. But we are all part of a bigger family called humanity. This is not what we should be doing to a member of our family.

Cloud Cities In Berlin

As I’m such an avid fan of flying, this exhibit is really whetting my appetite to play in the clouds. Cloud Cities is an exhibit at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum by Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno. There are twenty clear orbs full of either water or plants that are fully interactive. You can go inside them (hopefully you get galoshes for the water one) to play or even climb on top of one to experience what floating on a cloud would be like. How much better can it get. Well, all of the orbs are interconnected, so when someone moves in one, other connecting orbs will reverberate with that movement. Tomas wanted to tell the story that everything connects together and affects one another. Wow, ethereal yet deep. If you’re in Germany, go see this exhibit and let me know what it’s like. It’ll be open until January 15, 2012

– Thanks again My Modern Met

A Beautiful Stroke On A Wall

A small section of the exhibit at the Nuart Festival in Norway

I found another insanely gorgeous duo of street artists who go by Herakut. Both are from Germany, who started to work together the day before they met. But their relationship is so close that one person can work on a piece, then walk away so that they other person can finish it off. Wow, talk about relating on every level! As you can see by the image below, their fanciful imaginations take on an almost water color like feeling, though it all comes from a can. And considering that they both herald from the graphic design world, it’s easy to see how they can create so many lush layers of joyous shadows and light that bring each color to life. Especially when they have a stark black background to juxtapose against.

My Thoughts On Occupy San Diego

This is a living article and may change in a a few minor details to clarify my expansive thoughts so that I am clear and unbiased. Thanks for your patience.

Disclaimer: These are my own thoughts on Occupy San Diego. And this is long as I am truly excited about another avenue for me to support!

I’ve followed Occupy Wall Street since the beginning because they triggered my hope like no other group has in a while. I started following Occupy San Diego when I heard it was coming, but I couldn’t get down there as quickly as I had wished for a variety of reasons. I managed to go down there a few times to work with the planning sessions. I’m a new vocal activist, unlike many who have been walking that path for years. I admire those people who follow their convictions so fearlessly, and hope to become like them.

What I saw and heard brought back my faith in people caring about something bigger than themselves. In an essence, I saw the creativity of a group of concerned citizens inspiring themselves and those around them to work together to build something unique and different, yet still so familiar to them. As I spoke to one of my fellow occupiers after the march through San Diego yesterday, he said “We are building a community from the ground up from nothing!” We were both blown away by the thought. Pretty awesome vision, if you ask me. Continue reading

Painted Wonders

John Aslarona is a “purveyor of pure awesomeness”, and it shows in the delicacy of his creations. He chooses subjects like superheroes that are by no means delicate, and manages to use color, light, texture, and depth to work together with astounding results. Whether he is painting the Beast from X-men, or a beautiful woman he admires from afar, his paintings combine digital mastery with the delicate hand of a painter to create these painted wonders. Go to this site to see more of his work. The vibrancy of his creations makes them a thing to behold. Continue reading

Occupy Together – Is It Coming To You?

The conversation is happening around the world and it is truly inspiring! Many people are for the Occupy people’s movement, which started with Occupy Wall Street. Many people are against or don’t understand the movement for a whole slew of reasons (e.g. this movement has an identity crisis; these people need to get jobs; the government will get you back; this isn’t going to last; there aren’t a lot of people there…). While this back and forth squabbling that has been tearing our country apart for decades continues with no abate, there are people who are finally taking it upon themselves to at least publicly acknowledge that there are just too many things wrong with our country. Partisanship, ideology, religion, greed, self preservation…they all have their hands in creating this perpetual stagnation that we are drowning in.

So, if not now, then when? When does the situation become so critical that we actually have to acknowledge that the people need to step up and do a better job of working together. Will this work for you: Fed Chief Raises Doubts On Recovery (right, we never recovered from 2008 – we’re smack at the deep end of it – well, the “real” people are)? Our country actually lives in two separate worlds: reality tv and reality. Continue reading
