Yes, Yes, I like Clay Matthews – again

http://youtu.be/zKvVfArgEpo

So I was checking into any news on Clay Matthews, since I had heard that he had an injury (NO!!!!). But, hey, in football that’s just seems to be par for the course. It’s not like you’re sitting on a roll of Charmin when more than one 200+ pound guy is determined to make you one with the turf (see, even football has zen). And to make it worse, Clay revealed that he had played last season with a stress fracture because he knew that his team needed him. In the commercial spot above, it looks like he takes his dedication to helping his team off of the field. So cute (I mean manly. Yes, manly)!

Thanks to Brand Channel for writing up a piece on Clay’s ventures into the field of advertising. I know that Clay wants to be known for his hair, but you’re also showing his awesome sense of humor. Can’t wait to see more of him. No, wait, that didn’t come out right…

But I’m glad to hear that he’s starting to feel better as he prepares for more football. YEAH!!!

Steve Jobs In His Own Words

This seems like a good way to start the week. Steve Job’s commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Stanford University. Nothing else to say but hear his words, and take heart. Lessons, both good and bad, can be survived because you are doing what you love:

We Are Children Of The Stars

Imaginary Foundation has found another amazing message that truly resounds with me, a person who loves the stars. No, I’m not talking about celebrities. Them, not so much – though there are some nice and talented people in that world.

The world that I speak of is made up of the heavens in all of its glory. The night sky that blazes with the lights of millions of creations. The night sky in which we draw pictures so that we can feel like we are part of that universe. The night sky which embraces us all in moments of complete immersion. These are the stars of which I speak.

This clip is from Wonders of the Universe, a television series produced by the BBC, Discovery Channel, and Science Channel. Brian Cox is a physicist who hosts the show, and I cannot get enough of his conversations. Clearly, he connects with your soul by making you feel his words. That’s a great gift to have. And we thank him for it.

Within A City

Jasper James, a British photographer, travels around the globe to take pictures. His current images are a portrait of the people who live in a busy metropolis in China. Their images are silhouetted over an image of the city, so that the connection between the two signifies their intertwined relationship. A yin-and-yang portrait. So very insightful. – found through DesignTaxi post

When You Deny The Ugly

The NY Times put out an article about the Russian rocket which failed 5 minutes into its launch to deliver supplies needed on the International Space Station. Although the Soyuz rocket program has had a pretty reliable record with 43 successful launches to the space station, this latest misstep is prompting them to take a close look at the cause and may delay any other launch until everything has been investigated. If You Want To Be An Entrepreneur

Big Think has a pretty straightforward article and video (see above) about how entrepreneurs do what they do. It’s a simple message, but something that few want to entertain because it’s scary. Well, this path ranks up there with flying in the space program. It’s not for the weak-of-heart or the short termer. It’s for those who don’t see it as work, but as a calling. It’s for those who will put in all that they have, and then put in some more to make it happen. But if you do have an inspiration that nips at you on a daily basis, it is up to you to do something about making it come true. Whatever the goal, you have to start it now.

This message is coming from a guy who is pretty well known in his field. So don’t take it from me, take it from him. Or better yet, take it up for yourself. This world needs new ideas and inspirations to grow. Just make sure that you’re prepared for the ride, because it’s a bumpy one.

And if you want some inspiring words, then read Seth Godin’s blog. He’s pretty much right on the money.

Mega The Illustrator

I love playful advertising art, and Mega definitely has a style that speaks volumes. This man is seriously into details, if you know what I mean. And bright colors. This particular image of DJ Gero spoke to me, because of Mega’s use of some recognizable Japanese manga characters that I grew up with as a teenager in Japan. Do you know which ones I’m talking about? (hint: Dr. Slump, Hello Kitty, Mazinger Z)

Anyhow, Mega is a French-born illustrator who chooses to live in Bali. His main love and motivator is chili. Take a look at the profile written by DesignTaxi, and get to know the artist a little better. He’s got a style that will leave you with a smile. And he’s got a commitment to his art that ranks up there with his love of travel.

His words for his craft also say a lot about how he lives his life: “There is no secret. Just a lot of work. And no matter what people around you say and do, stay focus and keep your dedication and confidence intact. Art is commitment.” That’s pretty awesome.

Apocalyptic Society? Uncivilisation Festival

Hmmm. Today is turning into a day of the dead kind of thing. So, this seemed like an appropriate topic to talk about. The apocalypse is weighing on everyone’s mind because we are in the middle of 2012. And we all know what that means (unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past century). Even NASA put out their own take on the end of times.

With parts of society starting to talk about the demise of civilization as we know it, many people are turning inward and towards one another to figure out how to make it through some trying times. It doesn’t help tame our fears when nature throws in her two cents in the forms of earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes. The Uncivilisation Festival in Hampshire Downs opened for a second weekend with 300 people who are speaking openly about their interpretations of this new dismantling of all that we hold familiar. They aren’t there to deny reality, but to try to face it and cope with the changes that are starting to happen all around us. Continue reading
