We Love Zombies

We all love those things that go bump in the night. Or in this case, “ggggrawrr…thunk”. Uh yeah, that thunk was something falling off. I mean, zombies are always losing some part or another.

In this case, Mr. Zombie has lost his heart. He’s in luuuuv! Scott Campbell and Kelly DiPucchio have come out with a new story, Zombie in Love, for children. I guess that explains the cuteness of these zombies. Nice!

To celebrate the book release, Gallery Nucleus is curating a show of his art work for this book (and a book release party) that will run from September 3 – September 26, 2011. The opening night festivities will take place on September 3 from 7:00-10:00 pm, so go check it out. You can also get a pre-order copy of his book (signed and unsigned) here.

This looks adorable, and the show should be a lot of fun! Awwww…

The Internet Is A Human Right

Kostas Grammatis believes that every human deserves access to the Internet. The world is unbalanced, with more people having less than most others. But what would happen if an opportunity was provided to every single human to give them access to information that would allow them to grow. Current statistics indicate that 78% of the world has electricity, but only 26.5% have access to the Internet. Think of how many bright ideas that could revolutionize the world will never see the light of day because those people never saw the spark that could have set them free. This is really sad and unacceptable. Continue reading

Chihuly Gets A Museum

I seriously love Dale Chihuly‘s glass works. I’ve been following his installations for years, but have only had the chance to see one of them up close and personal. For those of you who are in the same boat (ha ha – get it – look at the picture), you will get your chance as his home town of Seattle has approved the installation of a museum dedicated to his artistry. Though there seems to be mixed signals coming from the public, who view this new exhibition hall as nothing more than another vanity location for the rich to congregate and show off. The Seattle Center has had struggles in getting a big audience in other such exhibitions, and the vision of Chihuly himself sounds a bit self-serving as he had wanted a non-compete clause to prevent sales of other artists’ glass creations. At least that was disapproved. Read the artinfodotcom post to get more background information on the project.

I haven’t read too much about Dale Chihuly personally, but he does sound like fame may be going to his head a little? But it’s not surprising as it seems to affect a lot of people who gain unprecedented attention for their creations. I guess it’s sometimes easy to forgive, because their work is just so beautiful and inspirational. It wouldn’t be the first time that I met a famous artist who can be a bit of a (fill in the blank with your appropriate adjective). Just saying…

But thank goodness that there are more artists out there who really are inspirations in every way! And thank you to each and every one of them everywhere for giving us such amazing eye candy to devour. We do appreciate it, even if we don’t always support it.

An Origami Crane For Japan

Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist who lives in New York, has got a lot of cranes. These cranes were originally created by children who wanted to make something for the people of Japan after that devastating earthquake in March. Bezos Family foundation, a non-profit youth-centric organization, created a Paper Cranes For Japan campaign where every crane sent in to their Seattle headquarters would generate a $2 donation with a ceiling of $200,000. Needless to say, they received over 2 million cranes from 38 countries around the world and ended up donating $500,000 to the Japanese Earthquake reconstruction efforts.

Now they had two million cranes, which is where Vik Muniz comes in. He received a truckload of these cranes and created his piece, which is being turned into an art poster. The proceeds from this poster will also be donated to Japan’s reconstruction and recovery efforts through the Architecture Through Humanity.

Talking To The Homeless

I see this man on the streets and wonder and worry about him. It’s especially heart-breaking because there are so many like him, and we only notice them occasionally or shut them out completely. I wish that I could help everyone, but I know that it’s not possible and it sucks. But this old man has been around for a while, popping up on my radar at different locations near where I live. I decided to stop by and give him some food and water as the heat has been intolerable. It’s got to be miserable to be on the streets, watching people go by as they ignore you for whatever reasons.

I know that I should have asked him what he wanted to eat, but I did try to be careful on my food and drink choices so that it didn’t make him sick. After all, it’s not like he has access to readily-available health care. Especially since a lot of working people are limited in their health care options because of reasons that don’t belong in this story.

I’d like to use his name, but it kind of went by in a blur as he was happy that someone had stopped to talk to him. I can imagine that he doesn’t get much opportunity for that. I let him talk because it seemed like the best thing to do. Simply be a sounding board for someone who doesn’t have many. He told me that he had once been married, but got a divorce years ago from a woman who didn’t have the same ideas as him. He has a son who he hasn’t seen in over 10 years, as the divorce wasn’t amicable. He’s heart-broken for the repeated hardships that he’s endured. He said that it’s especially been hard for him over the past year and a half. He even talked about his delicate health which has landed him in the hospital for treatment, because our fire department and ambulance services were kind enough to take him in without any comments about his life. I thought that this was at least some kind of blessing that there were people who kept their eyes on him. Continue reading

A Paper Architect

Christina Lihan makes architectural sculptures with paper, by hand, from pictures she takes to get the details correct. It is so labor intensive that my hands hurt when viewing her process pictures. I’ve drawn technical drawings in detail, but she does it with a knife and paper in 3D. Wow, that takes the steady hand of a surgeon, with the eye of a builder, and the patience of a saint! Impressive.

The End Of An Era At Apple

Today, we all heard the shocking news. Well, not so much shocking as it is heart-breaking. One of the greatest innovators out there, Steve Jobs, is stepping down from his long-time reign as the leader of Apple. We’ve all been a part of his inspirational travels that helped to create this world that we all live in. His genius put the Mac computer into so many hands, and allowed creativity to run free. And then he repeated this miracle with new creations that keep revolutionizing the way we live. Thanks for all of your hard work and love. The world is never going to be the same without you in the lead. And we all hope that your days are filled with much more inspiration and comfort. Stay strong, as you always do. You’ve been an inspiration for so long, and deserve the rest.

Stereotypes Do Not Help

I have to say that Joe Mulvey’s blog, DisCiPLinEd IrrEveREncE (still hard to type), is a really interesting read that shows how difficult overcoming a stereotype can be. The premise behind his series, It’s time to find out what you REALLY know about comics, is his attempt at opening up the readership of the comics genre. Considering that we all grew up with comics, it wouldn’t seem like such a hard task. But also considering that once we reach adulthood, we are shackled by preconceptions that skew our observations, it’s not an easy task at all.

I’m only part of the way through his interviews, and I actually cringed at a few of the types of people that he interviewed. I guess that since I consider myself to be fairly open-minded (at least I try to be), I never expected that people would be quite so close-minded about a genre that many people simply find to be immature. Although I have to say that all things considered lately, I’m not a big fan of maturity anymore. No, I’m not saying that being a juvenile is the way to go, but that a child’s ability to see past the surface into the imagination is something that we should never lose. That wonder is what’s necessary to create and inspire. Continue reading

Underworld Is BACK!!!!

I just saw the tweet by Colin Christian with a link to the video blog of Underworld: Awakening, which is set to release on January 20, 2012. As I am a serious fan of the Underworld series, this is such sweet news. Take a look at the set visit video blog posted by lucky, lucky Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub (Collider.com), who got to see the making of the movie up close and personal. And when I heard news that I was looking for, well, I’m dancing my happy dance. I can’t wait to see this movie!!!

FYI – There’s some teaser info in the video blog, so watch it only if you don’t mind knowing some details.
