Aspen Comics

It’s been a long time since I’ve had the chance to hear the Aspen Comics crew talk, since I just haven’t had the chance to go to SDCC in a long while. Here’s a first hand look at the current happenings at the studio that was started by the visions of the unforgettable and much-missed Michael Turner.

Take a look at the video brought to you by MTV, as Frank and Peter talk us through where Aspen Studios started and where it’s heading. We also get a chance to hear from Joe Benitez (of Wraithborn and Lady Mechanika fame), who got the monumental task of finishing of Michael’s dream for Soulfire. Enjoy hearing about their remembrances of a man whose inspirational vision created Aspen Studios. We still get to see Michael’s art live on, while also getting a taste for some new insane series like Lady Mechanika, Executive Assistant, Haunted City, Broken Pieces and much more go forward with a crew whose talents are proving that they will carry on the dream.

Filter Out A Personalized Internet

We think that all information is readily available to us. In the past, we had libraries where we went to dwell in all of the knowledge that mankind had acquired. Sure, it was tough to find everything as that information dump was immense. Our biggest libraries hold stores that would take us decades to go through. For instance, the Library of Congress in the United States contains over 147 million items on approximately 838 miles of bookshelves. That would be a really painful process to try to find and digest necessary information in a timely manner there. And that’s just one library in one country.

Then the Internet came along and provided an electronic archive that not only contains many of the works that man has created over time, but it also contains the collective lives of millions of people currently living. If you want to look at the activity done on the Internet for the year 2010, check out Royal Pingdom’s statistics. There are mind blowing numbers that most likely exceed the knowledge contained in all of our libraries combined. So we get information overload all over again. Continue reading

Dear World

Today seems like a good day to write a letter to my fellow journeyers of life on this Pale Blue Dot. It won’t be a long one, but I think that it’s become a necessary one.

What are we doing? I mean really doing to learn to live with one another. At the moment, it seems like the answer is…not enough. There are people suffering from inequalities, mistreatment, and even death. It’s not something that is comfortable to think about if you’re not in one of those places. If you are, then my thoughts and wishes for your safety and inner strength are with you all. As much as we are apart, we also need to be together. I wrote about needing to belong, but this goes beyond superficial attachment. This reaches down to our very bones, and says that we need one another. Continue reading

The Perfect Car Might Be Here

Ok, I am seriously jealous! Cool Hunting got a rare opportunity to re-visit the wonderland of car makers, the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy. I saw a tv special on this place a few years ago, and could only drool in awe at the hand-crafted perfection that these people put out each year. Each of the workers and the machinery there operate together with the precision of a Swiss watch, and quality isn’t simply just a mantra here. If it’s not perfect, it won’t leave their doors. Continue reading

The Cube Rat Wins

If you read my blog post about the American Cube Rat in Edinburgh Kickstarter project, then you’ll know what I’m talking about here. Well, I’ve since gotten to know Dana, and am amazed at what’s been happening to her. Not only did the project finally exceed the requested $7,000 threshold that she needed, but there is still 16 hours left to go as of this post (some nail biting moments for her)! There’s still time to support her American Cube Rat musical campaign.

As far as updates are concerned, you will also be astonished to find out that she is already in Edinburgh. If you don’t believe me, well, look at this picture of her first poster in a kebab shop window (with her peaking from behind). Yes, she had so much faith in her supporters that she boarded a plane before the projected end on Kickstarter. Now that is passion for your art!

Keep tabs as she’ll be posting the happenings ramping up to her show at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe that will be starting on August 6. Let’s all tell her to break a leg (not literally)!

Love Is Universal Yet Unheard

This video of Noam Chomsky’s take on “Love: Life’s Empty Without It” from Big Think really brings home how close we are to one another, without realizing it. Life is not fair for everyone, and there are many who do with much less than what others take for granted. But the one thing that we all carry is the ability to love. Even at our most tragic moments, there are those few people who will go out of their way to make the moment more bearable for us. This shouldn’t be something unique, but something that can uplift us all.

A helping hand goes much further than we’ll ever know. By coming together, we have the opportunity to bring an equality that has been chased after for as long as humans have been around. Spread the love to someone else, because its effects will go much farther than you ever intended.

Spoonplus – So That You Won’t Starve

I’m half Japanese, and it took me a while to learn to eat with a pair of chopsticks. When I first visited Japan as a little girl, my grandmother handed me a pair of chopsticks…to eat spaghetti. I don’t know if you know this, but spaghetti can’t be eaten gracefully with chopsticks. I know, because I was covered in sauce within the first two minutes as I hunted my food. At least I made my family laugh, which was why I later refused a fork. My grandmother had forgotten that I was raised in the USA until that moment, and had never seen a pair of chopsticks before. Yes, yes, laugh at the half-Asian girl. It’s all good because after years of practice, I sort of got the hang of it…unless I’m eating rice. Then it requires the shovel method that I see many Asians use. It’s good to know that even they have problems with their own utensils. Continue reading

When Messages Turn To Rants

Yesterday, I came across this great article trying to bridge the gap between the creative world and the business world. As it came from a fellow creative, I wasn’t surprised to read the words which identified many of those “quirks” that creatives are known by: Continue reading

What You Do With What You Got

Eddi Reader and her band mates played at Ted Talks in 2003, but it works at any time. Powerful words for a powerful thought. What will you do with what you got? Will you use it for something good or not? It’s really up to each one of us to make a difference for more than just you and me. What’ll you do now to set your talents free?
