Bored At Dinner?

DesignTaxi just posted this gem of a dinner table. Two Danish designers working as Ontwerpduo have created the first table that you can literally play at. It looks like a lot of fun, right? And you won’t have to listen when your Mom says “No playing at the dinner table!” I wonder how Mom will feel about this?

Thanks for the info, DesignTaxi!

A Legacy Movie Of The Space Shuttle Program

This has got to be one of the best tributes that I’ve ever seen for the space shuttle program, for NASA, and for space exploration. We’ve only just begun. We can’t stop now!

Boiling Inspiration Down To 6 Words

I’ve seen people, including myself, write dissertations on the subject of inspiration. It’s easy to be long-winded about something that you love. Because it’s so personal, everyone feels the need to do it justice.

But what happens when you’re only allowed six words? Well, then the task itself becomes a challenge because you have to make it count. How do you boil down such a huge concept into so few words? What words do you pick? It’s these types of challenges that bring out the best in us. It also forces us to think deeply so that we make the opportunity count. We have to bring out our A game, because anything less won’t satisfy anyone, including ourselves. Brevity sometimes can be your friend. For a writer, that’s a foreign subject! It goes against our very nature. But it also teaches us a valuable lesson: Life is all about ever-changing circumstances, so get used to it and adapt.

Here’s the challenge: In 6 words, describe what inspires you to do your best work.

And here’s my answer: Beautiful world that opens our eyes.

This wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.

What’s your answer?

The Space Shuttle Era Ends – Final Touchdown

“Mission complete, Houston. After serving the world for over 30 years, the space shuttle found its place in history and has come to a final stop.” – Commander Chris Ferguson

Fabio is Now Old Spice

Update: This hilarious campaign culminated in a duel between the Old Spice Guy and Fabio. The Old Spice Guy won in an epic (?) battle, also known as “Mano a Mano En El Bano”, played out on YouTube until the winner was announced. So, breath deeply people, because we’re safe once again. Though the universe might not be?

He only needs one name, kind of like Madonna. Fabio is that guy that makes us groan when we see him. Like Clay Matthews, he’s celebrated for his hair. He’s sold butter. He’s even haunted you on the covers of romance novels. And now he’s back as the New Old Spice guy. Check out his new commercial (and no, there’s more than one). Yup, I can hear the groans starting already!

(OMG – THAT is hilarious!)

Since I celebrate individuality in all of its forms, it would be remiss to not include this treat from NY Times. Continue reading

Looking Past Actions

We hear of a crime or a fight, and immediately rush to take sides. “They did WHAT?!”, people will gasp in shock, “How dare they?!!” And so the quagmire begins.

Again, we use those beliefs we’ve been taught about what’s right and what’s wrong. Legality only takes in black or white. But just like in life, actions can be colored in many variant shades of gray. That’s what makes them so volatile, and also requires a deeper look at motives behind them. There’s always a hidden story. Since I’m on a roll about hacking, I’ll use it as my example.  Continue reading

Beautiful Words

All you have to do is watch this clip to see that we can be truly beautiful. It’s all about how we choose our words. Words can hurt, and words can heal. We make the choice…

Special note:

Thank you once again, Mr. Robert Krulwich, for being an inspiration. You seem to know just when we need to see something, and present it so perfectly. I can watch this over and over, if only for the tears. And thank you, Purplefeather of UK, for making such a mesmerizing video masterpiece (made in 2010)!

STS-135 Leaves For Home

There really isn’t much to say, except that these scenes are truly out of this world. It’s been a long rocky road, but NASA has accomplished an extraordinary feat that will be tough to follow.  Thank you, space shuttles and your crews for your years of service, and good luck to those future intrepid space missions to come.

A final thought: We’re looking at our fellow humans who are looking down on us as we rotate by. Pretty amazing, right? The Shuttle Atlantis and the ISS have never looked so good as they do at this moment!

Cube Rat

I was going through Kickstarter to check out some new projects, when I came across this girl (well, woman) who has an amazing voice and a really quirky sense of humor. Her name is Dana McCoy, and she seems to be quite the character. She has a story that we’re all too familiar with:

Find a dream, lose that dream, chase that dream down with teeth bared! Continue reading
