We’re More Than Labels

I really wanted to go back to my search for inspirations, but the world isn’t cooperating.

“Liberal”, “Capitalist”, “Socialist”, “Traitor”…

I really do have to stop reading the mainstream news because I’ve been running up against a trend that I’ve always ignored though it still won’t go away. If you’ve been insane enough to follow politics lately, then you’ve also been hearing people throw about these words (and a whole lot more) as though they weren’t the word bombs that they are. Frankly it’s gotten to the point where I think that we adults don’t deserve to be making the rules any longer. The world that I’m looking at has a dirty glaze over it, coming from the washed out ashes of our inadequacies. And politics is not the only one to blame. Continue reading

Ai Weiwei – The BBC Interview

Updated: 07/25/2011 – Ai WeiWei has now opened a Google+ account.

Warning: This is really not easy to watch because it’s disturbing, but it can’t be ignored if you believe in freedom.

I just read the tweet from Imaginary Foundation and am now watching this hour-long video interview of Chinese artist and activist, Ai Weiwei. Frankly, no matter where you are, there are issues of freedom and civil rights that are fragmenting society. It transcends politics. But we definitely have it better here in the USA than they do in China and other censored countries (for how much longer I’m afraid to think about).

This video gives us an intimate glimpse of a country that few outside of it understand. Just watch this to hear the words of a unique individual who is standing up for his own rights, at any cost, in a tunnel-visioned country, and in turn is standing up for us all. This could easily be our own story if we ignore the warning signs and stray from the path of true democracy.

Ai Weiwei: Without Fear or Favour is showing at the Imaginary Foundation. Go view it to see how thin the line between good and bad has become. This is a heart-breaking reality that many are experiencing! Thank goodness that we have people like this who can show us what is good and what is bad.

The only way to make change happen is to start the change yourself. Believe that you can, because it might be the only thing to carry you through it all.

If They Don’t Accept You, Then Build Your Own

Note: See an update to Anonymous that I just found today (7/19/11) After you read the story, read some of the comments. The authorities might think that what they’re doing is legal (arresting conspirators), but look at the reason listed on the search warrants: “allege that Anonymous members performed a distributed denial of service attack against PayPal”. No, it’s only because they’re protecting a company. What about protection of the country? I’m really beginning to see things from the hackers point of view (and it seems that there are others who agree)?!

(original post start from here)

If you’re a hacker from the group, Anonymous, then you’re feeling a little more unwanted at the moment. That’s because they’ve just been kicked out of Google+, and had all of their other Google accounts suspended as well. Needless to say, there’s a Marshal out there and he means business! I heard this first from a DesignTaxi tweet which lead to this story. Continue reading

What’s Your Canvas?

Is there a list of acceptable mediums for creating art, or even forms of art? I didn’t believe there was, but I’m starting to think that not everyone got that memo. Looking at the pieces above, I’d have to say that they make a pretty powerful statement of creative inspiration.

We live in a world with a lot of closed minds! After hearing people yammering about the ugliness of graffiti and tattoos, all I can think is that I pity their narrow-mindedness. Yes, that piece also came from NY Times, but incredibly it’s one whose message I don’t agree with! Using your art with disrespect is not a good thing by any stretch of the imagination. Art in all of its forms should be about celebration. But when you’re using art to make more than a visual statement, then sometimes the end has to justify the means. Especially when the means are manipulated to control or indoctrinate. Continue reading

Observe

I’m feeling thoughtful right now…

I’ve been catching an important theme that’s pretty evident in many articles today about the importance of observation. I find this to be a skill that is so underutilized in our daily lives, yet vital to fully experiencing everything that life has to offer. How many of us take cursory glimpses at our surroundings and make decisions based on assumptions and gut instincts? While these traits can get you from point A to point b, is this really the most effective way of navigating? Perhaps if you’re living in the wilderness and need split-decision making skills, but it’s definitely not conducive to living well.

Each and every one of us can develop into unique, incredible human beings if we put our senses into it. I continually talk about my inspirations being tied into moments of experience through unencumbered observation. I use this key ability when researching and writing, because observation is one of the most basic skills that writers use. If we want to reach vast groups of people, then we need to know the right incentives that will move them. That means that we need to learn about them, collectively and individually. It’s no small feat!

But while observation is important, it must be done with all of the senses so that you don’t make judgment calls based upon preconceptions (or even misconceptions).

More SDCC Releases?!

Ok, we are less than a week away from the monstrous event known as San Diego Comic Con. And the releases are coming fast and furious now. So many that I give up covering all the ones that are catching my eyes because there are just too many as usual. My suggestion is to check out Vinyl Pulse or Plastic and Plush (or any of your other favorite vinyl news sites) for more detailed info. They are doing a much better job than I ever could!

But here are just a few more that I just have to cover because they left me drooling:

There’s so much more, so I’ll let you find the ones you need to have. Lots of luck, and have fun!

It All Boils Down To How Badly You Want It

Life is tough, and sometimes we have to let go of foolish dreams. Or so we’ve been told for most of our lives.

But what happens when you have enough belief in yourself that you just work on making your dream come alive? I just came across a story (from you guessed it, NY Times) which spoke of a young girl who had a dream to create an art gallery. Audrey Banks, a 17-year old painter and curator to the Teen Art Gallery, spoke of her dream to an aunt when she was in 9th grade. She had plans to turn her dream into reality before she turned 18, so she interned at No Longer Empty to learn the skills to become a curator.

Finally, a Facebook event page helped her to get support and submissions from artists ranging from the ages of 12 to 19. 5,000 friends later, along with additional support from students and art organizations, she received over 700 submissions which were eventually narrowed down to those selected for her first exhibition. Here are some of the pieces that will be showing at this event. From those images, I’ve got to say that I’m impressed at the talent of so many young artists.

I’m sure that we’ll be looking at more successes in a future that will surely be bright for this curator and her gallery. This just proves that age is just a number, so go after your dream. After all, we only have one life to live!

Note: Many thanks to NY Times for another inspirational find.

Do You Create To Share?

While going through my posts to make sure that things were working properly, I noticed that one of the linked videos had gone blank. Since this is an unusual occurrence, I clicked on it and was greeted with “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by the NFL Properties LLC”. Considering that this was a highlight video of Clay Matthews, I had assumed that the fan that I spoke about had spliced together the footage. Typically, I know to verify such things, but it had really looked like a fan lovingly put together this video and I was excited to watch Clay Matthews in action. It had never once crossed my mind that the NFL would even take time to do such a thing (still not convinced that they did), since they are concentrating on the best ways to make a killing in profits (NFL lockout, anyone). So, the removal sent a shock wave through my system, and dread in my heart. Continue reading

James Jean’s Rebus

James Jean is coming out with a new book release on October 1, 2011, and it looks to be another sensation. The pre-order can be found at Chronicle Books, and they will also be running a promotion at their SDCC booth #1506 where the first 250 to sign-up will receive a signed bookplate. Click on the image above or the word “pre-order” to go to Chronicle Books for the pre-order info and to view some pre-release images of the book. This looks like another must have!

From what I’ve read, it sounds like there will be a lot of new work showing in this book, including:

  • oil paintings
  • art for Prada
  • illustration work
  • new detailed releases from his sketchbooks
  • other milestone works

Here’s a look back at his Rebus art show at the Martha Otero Gallery in Los Angeles. Hopefully some of these made it into the book.

A Comment On America by Charles M Blow

They, Too, Sing America by Charles M. Blow for the NY Times

After you read this article, please tell me that you didn’t feel your heart tighten a little with pride for your brethren. I dare you too!

I had to share this because it’s a well-written, heartfelt testament to those laborers who are the backbone of this country. These are the unsung heroes who go about their daily lives, toiling over the hardships to ensure that they will see another tomorrow.

For too long, those who occupy a particular opulent echelon have belittled the efforts of these downtrodden simply because they didn’t have the same privileges. It’s easy to see what these privileges have produced by looking at our current leaders in many sectors of society. I know who I would go to if I needed honest help.

So, let’s celebrate the hard work of those non-STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workers that is occurring around our nation. Be proud that you’re also responsible for bringing us all another day. Charles has spoken for you, even if others won’t.
