Unexpected

OnlyOnceOccluded presents the unexpected in more ways than one. According to Reddit, 15 painted pianos were placed around Cambridge, and this videographer was lucky enough to catch this amazing talent taking advantage of its availability. THIS is what inspiration looks and sounds like!!! There is always something inside of you waiting for its moment of entrance. Sometimes, that entrance can happen in the most unexpected of places and times. Creative projects like this are just what we all need to create some beauty for others to share. This art installation entitled “Play Me, I’m Yours” was the epiphany of Luke Jerram, and its been making its way around the world since 2008. Check out the link to the street art installation’s site to see more beautiful experiences.

– thanks for the info, Art in Cambridge

Look Out Your Window – A Hero Might Be Outside

Isn’t this the sweetest thing you’ve ever seen? At the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Pittsburg, a special moment was about to start for the unsuspecting children. The brilliant idea by Steve Oszaniec of American National Skyline was obviously a hit with the staff and patients of this hospital as they gazed in wonder at the superheroes who were just outside of their window. It takes great people with big hearts like these guys to show the rest of us just how easy it is to brighten someone’s day. Read more about this heartwarming story on ABC‘s site. This picture just might be one of my favorites!

You’ve Been Owned

You've been owned

What do we own? This question is becoming more relevant by the day because many commercially-motivated organizations are pushing Congress to create oppressive legislation that will limit ownership of commercial purchases. Who knew that a purchase wasn’t an implicit agreement that the product that you purchased was yours to do with, as it belongs to you once the commercial exchange took place. But that is no longer the case as some corporations, sellers, creatives, and others seek to lock in their ability to continue making profits on every item that they sell in perpetuity.

How is this a free market? It isn’t. Now a case is being heard by the US Supreme Court that will decide whether people can resell physical items that they purchased. IP protection is pushing the market to limit how innovation can occur, and this will kill all of our futures. It is already skewing the playing field towards those with the biggest legal teams and resources. We’ve been getting wave after wave of draconian legislations pushed by groups who continue to demand that they be protected from the evil sharing proponents. If this law is allowed to pass, storefronts like Ebay, Amazon, and even weekend flea markets can be forced to shutter their doors or ask (and pay) for the privilege to resell items at the IP owner’s discretion. This is not how our markets should run. There’s nothing free about this form of commerce if powerful entities are the ones who control how the marketplace operates.

Click on the ball and chain above to visit DemandProgress’ site, You’ve Been Owned, so that you can write your letter to the White House and Congress to let them know that your purchases are yours to do with as you wish.  Without having to be forced to pay perpetually for it. By focusing on “foreign made”, you’re not shutting down the grey market, but you are limiting consumer choice.

Jason’s Back – Check Out His Spiderman Cover

I just found out that Jason Pearson is back! I can’t tell you how excited I am to hear that he’s slowly coming back to his own. I hope that he continues to get better and knows that there are a lot of people out there who care about him. So, he just showcased a cover of his that’s for sale (I wish I could afford it). Without further ado, check out Jason’s Spiderman cover. If you’re interested, then send Mike a note at More Great Art. In the meantime, take a look at the beauty of it and go tell Jason “HI!!!” on Facebook. I hope that he takes it easy and just creates what strengthens him. We’ll love whatever he creates!

Robot Friends

We’re used to seeing robots work alone or one-on-one with us, but lately we’re seeing more robot swarms that are coordinating their efforts to get a task done efficiently and expeditiously. These interactions are extremely complex as robots do not have the same ability to think freely as humans (no matter how complex their coding). Take a look at this video of a project, “Spatially Targeted Communication and Self-Assembly,” that was presented by Nithin Mathews, Anders Lyhne Christensen, Rehan O’Grady, and Marco Dorigo, from Universite Libre de Bruxelles and Instituto Universitario de Lisboa, at IROS 2012 in Vilamoura, Portugal. This is what the new generation of robotic collaboration looks like. Pretty incredible, isn’t it?

The Universe As We Know It

http://youtu.be/Qwi5L8jcXpg

We’ve seen many visualizations of how much of our universe we know. But what would that look like if the history of our astrophysics knowledgebase was depicted in an animated movie track that allows us to travel to the extent of what we know. Well, the American Museum of Natural History has made a video called The Known Universe that takes us on a journey through space and time through our efforts to understand the cosmos.  Be prepared to have your mind blown as we see how hundreds of years of studying our universe can be condensed into a 6-minute clip. That should give you a good understanding on just how much of an impact we have on the universe around us. And allow us to realize that there is still so much to learn about this life we lead in this immense cosmos that holds everything we know and have yet to know. Education continues as long as we stay curious and desire to learn. So, stay curious.

Asian Aging Process

I’m sorry but I just couldn’t stop laughing at this. Since I’m only part Asian, does this mean that I’ll be taller at age 120?

I hope that you had a good laugh. Thank Reddit if you did. I know that I do.

Monster Roll

The saga of man versus the sea takes on new meaning in this movie short, Monster Roll, by Dan Blank. What do the denizens of the ocean think about us humans hunting them without remorse? If you were one of them, how would you respond to all of this over-fishing that we do? And are there really monsters in the ocean, like we heard from sailors throughout the ages? Monster Roll answers these questions and more, and makes you want to see just who will win the fight: man or sea creature. Take a peek at this short, and then go check out the Monster Roll site for background info. This movie is hilariously entertaining. And great choices of actors, too.
