Bravery In Creation

A modern tragedy that Shakespeare could have written, as familiar as he was with a life full of passion and deceit. And that’s what Kurt Sutter and his crew have created with this drama.

I had thought that the previous seasons were brutal, but this new season has reached a pinnacle of heart-rending obliteration. There are worlds that we catch glimpses of that are full of life and death. To pursue these life styles requires a passion reserved for those who simultaneously feel and yet don’t. As difficult as life is, there are certain life styles which reflect the highs and lows of birth and death. Births of new partnerships, deaths rendered by pure hatred, passions which fuel plots that would make a master tactician blind with envy, and the emptiness of living on the edge for far too long.

For a writer, the Sons of Anarchy is a work of absolute beauty. The twists and turns leave the brain reeling as though it was taken around a bend too quickly. For a viewer, it’s difficult to invest in these characters because you just know that the pains you’re feeling must be incredibly realistic for these actors.

We’ve seen character after character run head long into a wall of  devastation, typically ending with peace that only comes with the ultimate price. And yet, there’s one walk through the valley of death for a special character that literally ripped my heart in two. Opie has been through so much with the loss of his wife and then his father. The anchors in his life have had their lines severed, leaving him drifting further and further from his foundation. His demise was simply too brutal, too meaningless, and just too much. Perhaps it was because he met his face with his eyes wide open, his choice his to make. He knew that his best friend was in need, and he stepped up to provide the type of security that only someone who’s tied to your heart would do.

I can only hope that I will someday create something that hits me in my soul in the same manner that Kurt’s creation does to me. We creators know that our creation will work because we managed to reach ourselves with those deepest of our imaginations. When we feel an inner shift, then we’ve touched those sentiments that drive us to act. And when a creation drives someone else to feel, well, that’s bravery in creation.

Before I Die…

It’s a pretty heavy question: “Before I die I want to…”

Candy Chang had a personal loss that impacted her world. And she decided that she wanted to hear what others thought about life. If you know that you won’t be around forever, what would you want to do that would fulfill you? What would you admit to others in public about yourself and your life?  It’s not something that we would even want to contemplate unless we were really prepared to face this ultimate of questions. It’s not pleasant to think that the world goes on after you’re gone. But it can bring you clarity in understanding what you consider to be important to the inner you, that part that knows you better than anyone because it’s the one who forces you to face those impossible situations. So, what would your list look like?

Here’s mine (a few of them anyways):

  • Before I die, I want to get to know the world as deeply as I can.
  • Before I die, I want to create whatever moves me…all of it.
  • Before I die, I want to be comfortable with me.
  • Before I die, I want to experience sheer moments of pure exhilaration.
  • Before I die, I want to get my pilot’s license.
  • Before I die, I want to change the world so that everyone has a chance to reach their dreams.

Using Imagination – What Do You Want To Be

So, how would you love to go into your office and see this? It looks like one crew gave their boss this present. A Redditor offered up this image of an office transformation, complete with a plank and someone already walking it.

So, if you had the chance to redesign your office, what would you do. What do you want to be (use your imagination)? Because your office could look just as sweet if you just let go and reached for your deepest wish.

Is The Internet Physical?

We all have had a chance to work and play on the Internet, and have learned so many terms to describe the intricacies with which it works. We see this nebulous cloud that we all touch and pull on, and quite frequently even add to. And we also know that our utility companies provide us with the gateway to get onto the Internet. But is that the end of the story? Not even remotely. Listen to Andrew Blum talk at Ted, explaining how he came to realize that there is a physical side to the Internet. As a matter of fact, there is miles and miles of cables that criss-cross the world (even through the depth of the ocean) so that one continent can connect with another.

And to think that this conversation started because of a hungry squirrel. The world is indeed small when you consider just how something little can turn into something big. Get to know our Internet through the people who actually helped to build it.

Levitating Waves

If you want to know more about what’s happening, then read the article on Argonne National Laboratory’s site. I have never thought about using sound as a levitator, but this device was actually developed by NASA in order to simulate microgravity conditions. This is what happens when two sound waves perfectly interfere each other, and create a standing wave. At certain points, the acoustic waves cancel out the effects of gravity and light objects can levitate when placed at the nodes. And the whole purpose behind this experiment is to form pristine sources of amorphous drugs so that the body only has to take in a lower dose of the medicine.

How’s this for blowing your mind with science?

Complaints Of Education Re-evaluation Begins…

There’s ALWAYS complaints about how bad education is, and how little teachers care for their students. And then, over and over, we find examples of teachers who really feel that their life’s work is truly personal. Take this TA presenting solutions to a student needing help (who happened to ask and get answered on Reddit):

There are a couple of things to say about people demanding better education. One is that, while our educational system needs vast amounts of improvement, it is not to be solely focused on evaluating teacher’s and student’s performances. We’ve been looking at education with the wrong prism for too many years, and the results are biting us on the nose. Another is that Australia really understands the importance of teachers in our world.

Education isn’t a business, any more than government is. These teachers go into a line of work that typically has very little appreciation. While this may not be true universally, it is causing a mass exodus from the teaching field which will impact our collective futures.

Teachers are not only there to teach, but also to inspire. TA’s and professors, like the one above, show how a good teacher acts. If you want to create a benchmark for comparison, then use this and the corresponding results as that line. What these people need is the freedom to teach in a manner that will keep both students and teachers engaged and enthusiastic. They don’t need more tests, more numbers, more measurements of performance.

Education is not something to master. It is something to be engaged in for life. It’s what enables us to grow as individuals, so that we in turn can inspire the world around us. If anyone wants to re-evaluate education, then start at the top at the management level, because this is where the wrong message is being created. No one’s there to get monetarily rich. They’re there to be replete with the type of information that’s the building blocks of life.

Let the re-evaluation begin, and let the changes continue as they have been with the likes of the Khan Academy, Udacity, and so many more. We’re entering into the enlightenment period of education, and it’s a beautiful experience.

The Inspiration of Science

For all of those science deniers out there, here’s an image of just how truly inspiring science can be to a child.

Yes, that’s the Space Shuttle flying over a school yard, and yes, those are children excitedly following it’s path across our skies. You can’t make this kind of inspiration up. There is a lot that science has to offer us. Most of all, it broadens our vision so that we take in more of the world around us. And that’s something that we need to keep doing. We can only make our world a better place for everyone if we keep learning about all there is to know. The knowledge is an endless fountain willing to share it’s spring with each and every one of us.

So, if you run into any doubters, listen to their words so that you understand why you need to keep learning. Life never stops, so our education shouldn’t either. There’s a big universe waiting to be discovered.

The Speed of a Creation

http://youtu.be/dTHWBSluUjU

When you think of home built, this is not what you would expect! So, you’ve always wanted a remote-controlled jet? Well, you’ll definitely need to add this JetCat P160-SX turbine to your master creation. And then get a camera that can keep up with the awesome speed. It’s so fast that you mostly see clouds in this video, and then you hear the jet before you actually see it. By that time, it’s too late to line up a shot if you want to take a picture or video.

This is the power of free innovation, where we all share our creations with one another to push each dream so high that we keep breaking molds and have to build new ones. Creativity should never be chained by artificial constructs meant to anchor and not soar.

And while you’re at it, check out JETS in HD’s YouTube channel.  They’ve captured some amazing models going at some mind-numbing speeds: 366 mph or 586 kph! WOW!!!! And the turbine sounds like music, doesn’t it?

– thanks Reddit for finding this incredible footage.

Narwhals Are Not Only For Reddit

Reddit just shared this incredible ceremonial mace used by the ruling council of Nunavut, Canada. Yes, that’s a Narwhal tusk, which is a central part of the Nunavut coat of arms and symbolizes the natural resources of the sea. The Mace of Nunavut is carried by the Sargeant-at-Arms and symbolizes the authority of the legislative assembly. you should read some of the history of the maces of Canadian authority as their creators put a lot of thought into their actual design and creation. It’s rather incredible that the first governing groups of society understood that symbolism went beyond ceremonial, and had the purpose to remind us of our beginnings. As we move farther away from understanding our past, it’s these types of collaborative creations that seek to connect us with that which we barely remember.

Narwhals are not only for Reddit, though many of us rarely hear about them if we don’t live in these type of water-based communities. The world is full of wonders that we need to immortalize, so that we respect them, protect them, and nurture them in life and not in memory. Isn’t history fascinating?

A Beautiful Slo Mo City

You won’t soon forget this beautiful slo mo timelapse video of Singapore, the Lion City by Keith Loutit. But what’s amazing about this video is that Keith managed to use tilt-shift to turn this mega city into a tinker toy wonder. It takes a few double-takes before you realize that this special technique really does make you look at our world differently. Go to his Vimeo channel to see more of his wondrous work that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled on the land of the Lilliputians. But take a look at all of the effects he uses, because he really is a master at photography.
