Ancient History Found In Space

It looks like the Hubble Telescope has once again found another piece of ancient history in outer space. According to an I09 article, BX442 is a “grand design” spiral galaxy of absolute perfection, and should not exist. They’ve calculated that it dates back 10.7 billion years, making it the oldest galaxy to be discovered. Just to be sure, the WM Keck Observatory verified the results.  Read more about the discovery in the latest issue of Nature.

A Sweet Sweet Galaxy By Nicole and Tanya

It’s been a while since I had a chance to visit My Modern Met, so I completely missed this magical candy installation done by the Australian duo Pip & Pop (aka Nicole Andrijevic and Tanya Schultz) at various galleries in Australia, Germany, Japan, and the UK. By looking at the images, you know that their medium of choice circles around things that are candy or look like it. It’s hard to pick a favorite because it all makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. You can’t help but want to get on your hands and knees to look at these creations up close and personal. Since a lot of us can’t go to see these exhibits (because it’s far from the US), we can only hope that they put out a photo book of their work. Because this is what inspiration would look like if it was given free rein. Gorgeous, delicious, and makes us ravenous for more!

Check out the article at My Modern Met to see many more images from their various installations. It’s completely mesmerizing.

p.s. Pip & Pop, please let us know if you make a book on these exhibits! Because I would love to keep it around to inspire my imagination.

Beauty Of Flight In Paper

Hummingbirds are some of the most stunning examples of the beauty of flight. Diana Beltran Herrera manages to give us a glimpse of that gorgeous moment when motion meets stillness as bird merges with flowers. A life sustaining movement captured in paper, suspended as a freeze frame that allows us to see the details as we never could in real life. Her love for color is clear in all of the work that she does, allowing us to see her world through a colorful prism. But her insane paper sculpturing ability is truly something to revel in. Go check out My Modern Met‘s coverage of the hummingbird exhibit to see more examples from this beautiful showing.

Bring Your Light

See what I mean? Sarit keeps discovering such delightful images. We know that the French are well known for embracing their artistic side. But they don’t have the monopoly on the magic. Each culture has their own specialty that defines what they would call their joie de vivre, and it weaves a beautiful tapestry of humanity. We can broaden our horizons by learning from them all. Whatever draws you, use it to bring your own light to the world. Because your light has a kaleidoscopic of colors all its own, and it’s beautiful to see.

Past The Ordinary

I’ve got to say, whoever Sarit is, thank you because you upload some incredible images. This falls under the category of seeing past the ordinary. How much of your inner child is still intact? Would you have taken a pencil shaving and turned it into a flouncy skirt for a happy debutante to wear?

Take a look around you and see anything ordinary in a new light by changing your perspective. Can you see the world in a soap bubble? What would you do with the cardboard roll that’s left behind after you finish a roll of paper towel or toilet paper? Everything becomes a bit magical when you look at it through the lens of imagination. Give it a try.

– thanks Piccsy for this bit of whimsy

Another Year…

So, each year, you look back at who you were and try to uncover what you’ve become. This seems like the perfect day to find a couple of quotes that are like a message of my life… a consistent message that helps to mold me into who I am. Here’s a few that resonate with me:

What are some of the mottos that stick with you year after year? Because your life does have a meaning (or two) that molds you into someone unique. Keeping dreaming and doing…no matter what life throws at you.

Star Trek Lives On

So, this is a little late, but my hubby sent me the Google doodle for Star Trek’s 46th anniversary. How did I not notice this doodle???!? Can you believe that Gene Roddenberry’s brain child is almost half a century old? We all have our favorite series (I’m a huge TNG fan myself, while my hubby loves the original), but we all know the mythos of the United Federation of Planets. The story started from a simple idea of a “wagon train to the stars”, and became a immense universe that brought outer space into our minds and homes.

So here you go, Star Trek fans, courtesy of Google and Ryan Germick. Isn’t Sulu adorable? And congratulations to those incredible people who made Star Trek what it is! 46? Wow!

Earth From Space, Then And Now

We may question the necessity for going to space, but these images alone should show you just how far we’ve come in less than a century because we did. Back when space exploration was in its infancy, the concept of seeing the Earth from outer space was relegated to the realm of fictional writing. We had greats like Verne, Asimov, and Clarke describe unimaginable worlds that are coming true today. Science fiction enthusiasts gorged on these books that took us to the outer reaches of our imagination.

Now, we have space agencies from around the world who are showing us just what we’re capable of if we’re allowed to stretch our minds as far as we can. But what brought reality into focus was simple photography. Here’s a comparison of space photography from 1949 to 2012. Pretty incredible, right?

So, let’s support our sciences. There’s a whole universe waiting to be discovered. And find out more about some prophets of science fiction on Discovery.

In The Right Hands…

What comes from the human mind is pretty incredible. But when it becomes reality, then you know that your creation has been placed in the right hands. Although I’m not a gamer, Bioshock is a fascinatingly beautiful game to delve into. As someone who loves creative inspiration in any form, games have become a source that I enjoy because their creators have some of the widest mindscapes I’ve ever encountered.

Well, here is Big Daddy from Bioshock, as created by the hands of one Harrison Krix of Volpin Props. The image was taken by scenemissingmagazine, who clearly also finds inspirations at cosplay conventions which are known for some amazing creativity by adoring fans. If you wanted to know how costume props are made, then go visit Volpin Props’ blog because he’s got a step-by-step instructional series that takes us through the entire costume-making process. Along with these behind-the-scenes shots, we actually get to see his costume in action because the drill is a working one!

Prop designers, game designers, photographers, artists, fans, and so many more people work together to create a rich tapestry of soaring imagination that takes us on rides we could have never imagined on our own. The most innocuous starts can lead to some dramatic creations down the line of history. All ideas start from a single grain of imagination. That that little grain can hold an entire universe within itself is testament to what imagination is capable of creating.

These are the types of people that design the worlds that we dream of. Creatives from all walks of life bring color into our monochromatic world that we reside in, pointing us to the right filters so that the colors of reality come into focus for us all. May them always have the freedom to set their minds free to reach the stars and beyond!
