Respecting The Body In All Its Forms – Paralympics

http://youtu.be/y5whWXxGHUA

So, we’re celebrating Labor Day in the United States, and this video seemed enormously appropriate as a reminder about the meaning behind labor. We’re in the midst of the London Paralympics 2012, which followed in the Olympics footsteps. Though some of the global audience views these events differently, we see that these athletes are all extraordinarily dedicated to their passion – whether they are full-bodied or not. I wouldn’t use the term able-bodied, because these men and women prove that they are just as capable as those athletes who are not “disabled”.

This ad by Samsung reminds us that each man and woman who participates in the Paralympics (and other sporting events) are decimating the impression that they are helpless. Their spirit is fierce, and they prove that limitations only exist in our minds. For them, it really is a labor of love, as they face the unfair social stigma that they are somehow less than all others. Here’s proof that perception needs to go deeper than the surface in order to meet the real person behind the persona. Labor is no longer just about commerce. It’s about being proud of what you do, whatever that may be, because you truly love what you do. It’s also a reminder that life is fragile, so make sure that you’re doing what you love. The rest will fall into place because of your dedication.

p.s. Be sure to watch the other videos being shared in this Reddit post. They’re all really amazing!

In Other Words, CARE

Thanks for this reminder, this isn’t happiness!

So, I went silent a while ago on Twitter because of what the image above says. In my case, I went too far in that direction and sort of went into meltdown. When there are so many things happening around the world, life becomes overwhelming. Or should I say, living it becomes overwhelming. So, I decided to step off until I regained my equilibrium.

The business world is one arena that I’m conflicted about. We all need to make some kind of a living so that we can survive, but exactly how do we create work that MEANS. We’re living in a moment in time where we’re being faced with understanding what’s truly important. Will we continue to pursue the obsession of physical wealth, or will we expand wealth to incorporate the intangibles that lead to fulfillment of the soul?

Take these two articles on HBR:

Both describe companies that are trying to stay ahead, and yet they follow different paths towards “success” (whatever it means to a company vs people). Notice how the “caring” perspective is definitely coming from different angles? The soft surveillance technique is something that we are increasingly being confronted with from government as well as from business. It’s leading us down a path that most don’t want to travel unless you’re a writer (aka Orwellian). But the customer awakening recognition is attempting to collaborate with the audience so as to show just how we built ourselves up into the societies we currently live in: together.

Giving a shit isn’t code for anything more than simply caring about more than oneself. As the global populace changes the focus to how life should be lived and what is the foundation for a good life, the message of caring will drive the future conversations of business. Commerce isn’t only about profits, margins, and market shares. It’s also about ensuring that those you engage with are placed at the center of the business. Your audience is much bigger than those who fund your company (aka shareholders). Your audience also includes those people who work for you, those who talk about you (both good and bad), those who pass by you, and those who engage with you. That means everybody. Making everyone happy is impossible, but caring about everyone (and everything) isn’t. That comes from your core being. It’s either your central motivator, or it’s superfluous.  Which side of the fence you stand will dictate which article you found more informative.

So please, CARE about something bigger than yourself. That goes for companies and for individuals. And for governments. Etc, etc, etc… We’ve been ignoring the ramifications of not caring for far too long. It shows…everywhere.

Just saying…

Feeling Out Of Control?

http://youtu.be/1VuMdLm0ccU

Is your life feeling a little out of control lately? Well, you’re not alone. Check out this clip of two hamsters doing what hamster do. Except that they literally end up out of control. Whatever you do, don’t drink anything while you’re watching this. Your monitor won’t like the results. 😉

And Then KUT Brought Nature To Us

How do you not watch a video with a title like “Oh Joy!“? Well, the answer is that you do…with a smile. And afterwards you find out about a creative collective going by the name of KUT in Latvia, who were seeking to bring the country to the city. Read their message below to understand the vision behind the action:

We brought the country to the city. To revive the grey concrete, to break the routine and give you a moment to reflect on what we are and where we are going. Sometimes surprises just happen and we have no influence over them but we do have influence over our perception. How ready are you to accept whatever life throws at you with a smile?

The mission takes KUT from the countryside collecting what looks like cattails, which provides them with the downy innards that are at the heart of this mission. Once in the city, the video shows the reactions of people in that small area when confronted with the unexpected “snow”. It’s sweet to see the delighted expressions of kids and adults (well, some of the adults) as they are engulfed in a blizzard of softness. But it’s sad that the police arrested them – though they were later released due to lack of evidence. Can’t wait for the day when moments in life like this are celebrated, as they should be. We’ll be all the better for expanding our imaginations.

p.s. I was not aware at the sheer amount of usefulness that a cattail provides. They’ve always been one of my favorite plants (along with ornamental grasses), but I didn’t realize that parts of them were edible. TIL…

Changing Hues Of Saturn

Saturn has fascinated us ever since the first time we saw those beautiful rings in our earthly sights. Recently, Cassini Imaging Central Laboratory for Operations (CICLOPS) released a new set of images that are amongst the most beautiful I’ve ever seen of this fascinating planet named after a Roman god. This image is a combination of six images from three color spectrums, RGB, that shows us how the planet would naturally look. The CICLOPS mission is a joint effort between the US and Europe, with NASA/JPL managing.

People wonder why space is such an important endeavor for humans to chase, and yet it’s images such as this that allow us to get a better understanding of the universe around us – one that affects our daily lives in ways that we rarely comprehend. Our explorers, whether they are man or machine, are made from the imagination of mankind as we seek to know our place in this cosmos. If you really want to understand the importance of space, then listen to Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, or any number of scientists who teach us that our world is made up of more than meets the naked eye. And images like this beauty appeal to our every sense, while striking a chord of awe that pushes our curiosity further than before. We are creatures of ideas, with space agencies and their counterparts expanding those ideas into visions for the future. The natural world around us has an over-abundance of incredible sights to share. Isn’t Saturn gorgeous?

Muscles…FLEX

Honestly, Old Spice can always be counted on for some crazy video imagery and this one fits right in with the library of craziness as done by the Old Spice guys. In this video, Terry Crews uses his muscles and flexes for a little musical creativity. And then we’re given the chance to give it right back to him. On a hilarious note, if you don’t record something right away, well, Terry gets a little cranky.

If you want to laugh a little, then check out this video on Vimeo. And be prepared to participate…or else…

Well done, Old Spice, well done! And thanks again for the find, Reddit.

Relationships Are Hard – Hearing In Them Can Be Harder

Wow, Reddit, you allowed me to stumble on an incredible video that I was not expecting to see. S&G – Sound of Silence connects us to a world where hearing is not an option. Deaf people are disabled in some ways, but they compensate in many other ways. Whether we can hear or not, our senses only work when we actively use them to see the whole picture. When you’re excluded from a group, the limitations sometimes overpower our logic. It’s only when we clear our heads that we see reality as it can be.

Relationships are hard, but hearing in them can be harder. Active engagement is what keeps them healthy – along with a whole lot of caring. And using all of your senses.

And to give credit where credit is due, here is the original video shot for an Australian initiative: Quiet Signs of Love. Bravo, ikonfilm!!

p.s. If you want to connect with a deaf person over the phone, then try out the National Relay Service (and learn to sign). More and more services out there are helping us to overcome barriers, so that we can reach out and make a connection that strengthens with time and effort. A relationship can be worth that effort. It’s just takes a little heart.

p.p.s Get out some tissues for the ending. It’s sweet.

When Fans Talk

I saw this screen shot on Reddit, talking about Microsoft’s closing of Halo 2 on XBox live. Although I’m not a gamer, I am fascinated by online gaming’s ability to bring a diverse group of people together from all over the world to share in an online experience. I guess that the only reason why I never pursued gaming is that I knew that I’d get caught in the gravitational pull of a good game filled with good people, amazing imagery, and incredible experiences that I helped build. As a creative, I tend to get consumed whenever I’m in creator mode – to the point that I forget that I’ve got other responsibilities. Any creative will tell you the same story – no matter what they’re creating. Hence why we pick our pursuits carefully, since they’re all-consuming.

Many companies, on the other hand, do not look at this collaboration in the same way as its users do. And this final statement from the Noble 14 gives you a hint as to how wide the gulf is between user and company. Yes, many companies are finally getting the hint that things don’t have to be brand spankin’ new if they’ve passed the test of time and become a cult favorite. Some things are created well in the beginning, and become even better as more people build upon a strong foundation. This page says a lot about our current disposable world. We think too much of the short-term rewards without understanding that good benefits can sometimes take years to build up. Everywhere in the business world today, there are things going obsolete and fans who are unhappy at the loss. The lesson of the story might be how the story was built in the first place. When everyone has a hand in making any experience, online or otherwise, memorable, then you’ve pretty much achieved the goal of creation.

When fans talk, companies should listen harder to the nuances of the conversation. There’s some valuable input that hold a treasure trove of information to help build a closer user-company relation.

Just saying…

It Really Does Help…

This image gets right down to the basics of manners. It means that it really does help when you use proper manners and think about the person on the other end of every transaction. This might be a business transaction, but it contains a distinctly human element. Demand with little thought towards the fact that you’re interacting with another human being, and you pretty much get what you deserve. Having worked in customer service for many years in my youth (well, pretty much always since there’s always customer service attached to any business), I know what it’s like to be treated well and to be treated poorly. You can guess which one gets a better attitude towards the customer.

In the past, the saying was “The customer is always right”. Well, lately, many customers have taken on an overlord attitude that is dehumanizing to those in the customer service field. No one should ever have to be treated like “cattle” (yes, I know there are ethical cattle owners as well – but I’m still using this age-old phrase we’ve all heard) to such a point that they actually hate their work. The number of times that I’ve gotten an overly grateful response from an exhausted worker when I simply ask “How are you?” tells me that much of the business world is clearly heading in the wrong direction.

So take note of the image above, taken at an Italian coffee house. Just a little bit of common courtesy can help with more than good service. It brings the world up a notch towards a balanced happiness that is sadly lacking these days.

And on a final note, that this even needs to be posted in a store window is a sad testament for society everywhere.

– thanks again Reddit! You guys always help with the deep thinking and social lessons, don’t you?
