The Mind Is Incredible

I stumbled on this mind-blowing video from Reddit, and can only say that the mind is an incredible thing. Stephen Wiltshire is an artist with an incredible photographic mind that literally swallows up his surroundings and retains those details so that he can draw them out in panorama form. He’s traveled around the world capturing many iconic cities and structures.  But what makes him so powerful is that he was diagnosed with autism at a very young age. If you read his story, you’ll also find that he has another love: singing. According to one of his music teachers, Stephen has perfect pitch. What’s amazing is that he is incredibly unique as most savants do not have more than one talent. Take a look at the video and see for yourself.

An Artist’s Point Of View

Leave it up to an artist to capture the making of a space opera from his point of view. Mattias Adolfsson is a Swedish artist who specializes in a whimsical look at the world around him. His view seems to frequently include animals, creatures, and people co-existing in uniquely fun ways. But what is amazing to look at is the close-up details of each image that he creates. Go check out his sketchbooks to see some of the minute details he draws that leave you in awe. For a technical illustrator who’s always been fascinated by the details of an object, Mattias is definitely an artist after my own heart.

Another Marriage Proposal Captured By Reddit

You won’t be able to keep many secrets from Reddit. They have a way of uncovering just about anything anywhere with their hive mind. And this time, it was another marriage proposal captured by a Reddit photographer who stumbled on this moment and wanted to share the image with the two involved. Info exchanged from one person to the next until the proposer was found. Needless to say, the couple is happy to have this moment captured for their wedding scrapbook. Read the story on Mashable to find out what happened. It’s a heartwarming one!

Congrats to Joel and his fiancee, Jennifer. Best of luck as you two embark on life together. And bravo to Patrick Lu for capturing the magic for them (and us).

This Is The New Look Of Brains

NASA is now on another high, and it’s well deserved. But the one thing that caught my eye as we all watched, along with the MSL crew, Curiosity descend towards Mars’ surface is that NASA’s geeks are not like they used to be. That old antiquated stereotype of pocket protectors and glasses has been replaced with a new generation of geeks that are as unique as their work. Take the flight director of NASA’s Curiosity rover, Bobak Ferdowsi:

He was the first person to catch my eye as the photographers made their way around the mission control room. It’s not often that you see a NASA scientist/engineer sporting a mohawk with stars in it. But, WOW, has he changed the image of a space nerd forever. And he’s not even close to being the only one to do so – check out this profile of the a few of the M-team from NASA/JPL.

But if you want to hear the biggest inspiration of all, read the NPR’s story of how Adam Steltzner went from being a rocker to NASA/JPL’s EDL team leader. He’s clearly pretty amazing, as noted by the emotional thank you speech he gave in the 1st press conference after the successful landing of Curiosity. NASA once again proves that they truly are a national treasure themselves – doing the amazing feats that they do on a fraction of a fraction of some of the biggest budgets out there. And they’ve got some incredibly unique people who are leading the way into space.

People out there will continue to judge others based on their outer image. But that outer image is but one disguise of the true person. And the true person usually is hiding a whole lot more depth than anyone would ever expect.

It’s time, once and for all, to break down stereotypes to show just how limiting they can be. People like Bobak are doing just that while being true to themselves. Now that’s blazing your own starry trail! This is the new look of brains, and it’s attractive on the outside as well as the inside.

OMG – A Funny Thing Happened On Mars

Umm, if you’re a fan of Prince Charles….sorry. But this is too funny not to share. Thanks Reddit for making this funny thing happen on Mars! And kudos to iamconorwilson for making this happen so hilariously. : D

p.s. Ha, ha – just found another one. See, you can have fun with science!

A Very Human Message

As corporate messages go, this one is full of the best of human qualities. Of course, it was done by Oreo Cookie. These guys continually prove that they stand up for the best in humanity, with their support of science as well as equal rights. Other corporations might want to start taking note and open their minds as well (at least about basic morality). People want the best from one another. They actually need it. We’ve now started to move to other worlds. That should give us cause to stop and think. Shouldn’t we export what’s best in humanity, instead of what’s best in money? Oreo seems to think so, as do many more humans around the world.

Just saying…

An absolutely perfect ad, Oreo!

Another Amazing Cover – Another Amazing Band

First of all, everyone is inspired by something already existing. This particular song seems to bring out the inspiration for many, many others. Absolutely nothing wrong with building on something to make it even more amazing than the original. Here’s further proof:

Yep, we’re back with another Gotye cover, but this one is supremely delicious because it’s done by the amazing Coheed and Cambria. You know the music is good when you literally get the shivers and you can feel the goosebumps before you even see them. These guys (and Claudio’s wife) fall in this category. Gorgeous tunes. Incredible artistry. And wow, are they powerful!!! Mixing different styles of rock and making it into something worth listening to. A modern Rush (?). Yes, yes, I have a huge weakness for guitars (actually, a lot of different string instruments). And people who love to collaborate with others. Who doesn’t?

There are just so many amazing musicians out there that it’s hard to keep track. But it’s never a problem to find a new one because you can never have too much good music! The only annoying thing is that I didn’t find them much sooner – teaches me that I need to keep pushing to find as much incredible music out there as I can.

– thanks again to Reddit for finding this clip

A Classic Never Dies

Music soothes the savage beast – I’m proof that it works (yep, smiling now). No matter how upsetting a day gets, music always makes it better. And what better than a classic by Yes. Here’s Changes performed in 2003 with Trevor Rabin at the helm. A good classic never dies, it only twines stronger with your soul. Like this.

I thought that this would be a great way to start the week. Melodiously.

Curiosity With Mars

Update: Congratulations to the NASA JPL Mars Science Laboratory team and to Curiosity for a beautiful landing. We’re on Mars! : D

Today is the big day as NASA’s Curiosity reaches the atmospheres of Mars and attempts a landing at 10:31 pm PDT. This rover, like its predecessors, is a mobile laboratory whose mission is to investigate the likelihood that the soil contains evidence of microbial life. Check out NASA’s JPL Mars Science Laboratory site to find the latest information about the landing and Curiosity’s mission.

Missions like this that NASA is still accomplishing on its minuscule budget show just how important science is to our future. It also shows the ingenuity we can produce when confronted with dire circumstances (like continual budget cuts). By studying planets like ours, we may unlock the key as to how planetary evolution diverges and perhaps even get a glimpse of our potential future if we’re not careful. Just like species on Earth share a lot of characteristics at the molecular level, so might many planets. Science is about understanding and knowledge gathering. And it’s all driven by curiosity. In this case, Curiosity with Mars.

Watch the approach with NASA and share in this moment of history to learn. Knowledge can be beautiful.

Lots of luck to the MSL team and to Curiosity! What an amazing achievement.

The Dedication of People

After a disheartening week of political news that leaves you wanting to bungee jump without a cord, there’s finally some awesome news to celebrate. Wall Street continually reminds us all of just how complex their jobs are, and that we’d never understand the intricacies of the financial market. Well, although the SEC lost the latest case against a Citigroup “scapegoat”, they were handed something that rarely happens: a message from the jurists.

“This verdict should not deter the S.E.C. from continuing to investigate the financial industry, review current regulations and modify existing regulations as necessary.”

Guess what? The people are on to the atrocities being committed in the name of fiscal championship by the titans of the marketplace. They don’t want those who really perpetrated this global mess to walk away with no punishment, so they spoke directly to the SEC. The global financial markets are on notice: what the regulators are forgiving, the people aren’t. The free ride is over. Maybe that’s why Sandy Weill is throwing all of you under the bus?

Read more about story of the dedication of people who want the right thing to be done in the NY Times. It’s an amazing article and statement by the people.
