Hey All – I’m Back

I hope that everyone had a great holiday week (if you’re in the US). I took advantage of the time to do some traveling…long distance. My most prominent memory soon became the following image:

You can probably tell where I’m going with this post. Yup, I am brain-dead. Or at least brain-coma. Driving 7 hours non-stop will do that to you, I guess. When I was actually moving and not just staring at the rear bumper of a monster vehicle that blocked any forward view (yeah, I did that a lot on both trips). Yes, there was miles of stationary driving.

So this post will be a wishing post, as well as an apology that I’m not back up to full steam. Tomorrow you’ll see more inspiring finds. Or you’ll see stuff regarding flying because that’s part of my wish…to be able to fly over parking lots that claim to be freeways. Gridlock is never inspirational, on freeways or in politics. We’ve got both and that’s got to change.

For all of our sanity. In the meantime, hey all. I’m back. : )

Puttin’ On The Ritz In Moscow Style

So, I received this video link from my dad and was surprised that I hadn’t heard about it (since I love flash mobs). But this particular flash mob has a much bigger intention than simply surprising people in a good way.

Roots Action created a petition to teach our world leaders a valuable lesson – one that they all really need to learn. And using a group of extremely happy and talented Muscovites to show that Americans and Russians share much more than they realize is a pretty great way to deliver the message. It helps that we even get to see a newly married couple join the joyous dance, proving that good things come when we work together.

Sit back and enjoy Puttin’ on the Ritz in true Moscow style (wow, that snow looks good right now, huh?). Then let’s all work together on getting a universal message to all of our world leaders to let them know that the world that they used to know has changed. No matter how many road blocks our leaders use to protect the old ways, we’ll just throw up ways to show that We the People want to work with one another.

Peace takes work, and it also takes trust. It’s high past time to put the game of Risk in cold storage, so that the sun shines on a world willing to hold hands with one another without fear.

p.s. Thanks Dad! This one put a smile on my face.

The Best Song In The World…you know it

Tenacious D…the best song in the world…or a tribute to it anyways…in the way that only Tenacious D can do it! What more can you say?

It’s the perfect bit of happy that gets you moving through the day (even if there’s a devil in the plot, it’s cool because he shreds on the guitar). And considering that it’s Friday, well, what better way to pay tribute to the best day of the week (especially the end of it so that the weekend begins)?

This is what your brain on uncontrollable creativity looks like. You should be afraid by what’s going to come out, but you just know that it’s all going to be ok because you’re having too much fun doing what you love. What more can you say indeed? The best song in the world. Yes, Tenacious D, you had us at “rock”! Or maybe at “Rize of the Fenix”?

Happy 4th And To Bid-ness NOT As Usual

This is going to be a post with a dual purpose. First and foremost, a celebration of an incredible New York illustrator by the name of Kyle Stecker. This is one of his pieces, “bid-ness as usual” showing in his portfolio on Behance. Do yourself a favor and go check him out on Behance and on his own site! You’ll see why I want to celebrate his creations. There is strength in these lines, as well as some powerful visual commentary that wants to slap us awake.

As for the second intent of this post, well, it’s to continue on with the topic of deep thinking about our independence – or should I say lack there-of. The 4th of July is definitely a big holiday in the US, but it feels as though we’ve forgotten why we celebrate this historic event. Our politics tells us that we should trust “bid-ness as usual”, but I know that there are a lot of people who are no longer inclined to do that. Why would we when we are living on the pits of the decaying fruit of (what we thought was) independence? Even Kyle here captures the lack of spirit that we’ve all been feeling in regards to how life is being led.

Another person who’s been pretty eloquent on the subject is Umair Haque. If you follow him on Twitter, then you know that he’s been going pretty insane with our current historical trend that is falling faster than a flaming meteor. If you want to hear what he’s been thinking lately, then check out his video:

Just check out non-mainstream sources to find that there are so many more people just like them who are non-believers in “bid-ness as usual”. If you’ve read my own writings, then you know that I’m among this group that is struggling under the weight of status quo. But what you can’t say is that any of us believes that we can’t change it all. Because we do believe that there is something much better: a “bid-ness NOT as usual”.

There are millions that are making their collaborative voices heard whenever they see injustice and imbalance.

  • Its joint efforts resulted in four boys being suspended for verbally torturing their bus monitor.
  • It also is working to stop the injustice against the digital domain (aka the Internet) by our politicians and entertainment lobbyists with SOPA and PIPA, and is continuing with ACTA and TPP (and on and on and on, because these greedy politicians just won’t stop).
  • It’s still going on with hundreds of citizen organizations that are working to give hope to the poor and suffering through crowd-sourcing efforts and more.
  • It’s pushing back against the corruption and intolerance that is everywhere.

And best of all, it’s millions of people willing to collaborate with one another to make something much better than what we’ve got. If there’s a will, then they’ll find the way. I firmly believe that this should be what we are celebrating this 4th of July.

Independence of mind, body, and spirit standing against “bid-ness as usual”. Our forefathers fought, just like those brave protestors around the world are fighting, to bring about a new world. One where our lives mean so much more than just two-dimensional numbers. We are three dimensional, people. We need to start acting out ALL of our dimensions to disrupt the mundane and un-inspiring status quo. Just follow those colorful characters who are already clearing the path for the rest of us to follow. Or better yet, do something extraordinary yourself. Let’s turn status quo on its head!

Now that would be an independence celebration that we could all get behind, don’t you think?

Architectural Wonder In Cedros

Ok, I’m kicking myself that I didn’t have my camera with me. So this photo caught with my iPhone will have to do. I had no choice but to take this picture because these beams are incredibly amazing! Yeah, I know, I know. You go into a store to look at the goods. But how many times do we overlook all of the hard work that goes into the actual space design?

Unless you walk into a building like this…

This is the glorious shell that houses SoLo in the Cedros Design District. CDD is an amazing feast for the eyes when you walk into the many stores that illuminate design, art, and an all-around eclectic shopping experience. Nowadays, I don’t shop unless an item absolutely tells me that I need it. But the visual eye candy (and mental stimulus) is something that I search for every day, because it’s what drives my own creativity.

Can you blame me for just staring up into the rafters? Because these are some seriously gorgeous ones, if you ask me. And again, I apologize to SoLo’s owners for failing to pay attention to your beautiful wears. As you can tell, I was a bit pre-occupied. This is art at it’s finest!

And here’s the architect, Jennifer Luce:

p.s. Why not use today as a day to go out and look for some amazing creative talents? Every industry has them, and they’re just waiting to share their visions with you. Enough of us start to dream together, and who knows what kind of disruption we can accomplish in order to create a more inspiring world?

A Light Week…Sort Of

So, this week is going to be a light week because my brain needs a rest…and it’s a holiday in the US. This particular holiday should be meaningful to the whole world though because we’re celebrating our Independence Day. The day when a nation came into being after fighting off its oppressors. A day that is supposed to be about FREEDOM.

Take a look around. Can you honestly be proud of what we’ve become? This might be a good time for the whole world to sit back and think deeper than it ever has. We royally messed up when we created this existence. We’re no where near democracy in crucial areas of our lives. We have to realize that we have the answer to our problems: To work together collectively. Not for a stupid monetary return, but for something much more important: Our survival.

http://youtu.be/l31UUl5SyXk

The one thing that Hollywood got right (and that’s saying a lot because they suck at a lot of things- like politics): We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. We’re fighting for our right to live.

It looks like democracy is about to get messy, folks!

Wanderlust

An image on Reddit led to a sweet little video about wanderlust and fairy doors. It looks like the town of Ann Arbor, Michigan has been invaded (so lucky) by fairies. The proof is all around. In the most unlikeliest of places, a miniature door can be seen. The kind of door that you read about in Alice In Wonderland or other fantasy novels like the ones written by Kim Harrison (I’m totally in love with the Hollows series).

Just like Tyler says in his video, there are reminders all around us that urge our wanderlust on. Knowing that there is much in the world that will captivate you is an inspiring feeling. No matter how old you are, you still have something to learn. And hopefully it’s something that will cause a tremor in your soul. Because that is the emotion that drives wanderlust.

Enjoy and then go wander around your neighborhood. The colors, whimsy, and magic are waiting for you.

Advice With A Heart (And Tears)

Customer service workers need to have volunteers who wait outside their jobs that exist only to give hugs and patience awards out to those employees who are coming off shift. After waiting tables for years, I try to be as forgiving and nice as possible because of the shit I have seen heaped onto myself and coworkers.furgenhurgen

Yep, it’s from Reddit again. I swear that there are always thought-provoking posts on Reddit that pop up when you really need them. They make you dig deep down into yourself and pull out your humanity, recognizing that we all share experiences though our lives are separate.  And many times these experiences lead us to tears.

Having worked many customer service jobs for a long, long time (it felt longer), I can completely attest to the amazing advice that you see at the top of this post. It is advice with a heart, and accompanied by many tears from those who work or have worked in this exhausting field. Honestly, the people who made these people cry (read the entire post on Reddit) should be forced to work in these thankless jobs under the same conditions that they dished out –  without a break for a month or two. I’m sure that not many would last before they too caved in.

If you’re a boss, watch your employees closely. Don’t just acknowledge when they produce for you. Watch what they are enduring and recognize the conditions. Dig deep into yourself, and ask if you would want one of your loved ones to go through what so many service workers go through. If the answer is an emphatic “NO!!!”, then you have some changes to make. Keep making those changes until the environment is balanced. It will become balanced because the customers will realize that they too have a responsibility. We all have our share in making life fair and balanced for everyone, and it has little to do with mechanisms like money (which take away the recognition of our humanity).

The business world (and status quo) have been brain-washing everyone with irresponsibly dangerous rhetoric. If you can’t recognize what inhumanity looks like, then you need to immerse yourself into the worst possible conditions in life until you recognize how wrong they are.

No one gets off being crappy to another living being, human or otherwise.

We should not have a society where we need this kind of advice. Something needs to change. Just saying…

Note: Empathy – it should be a prerequisite to being human.

PS22 Chorus

Wow, wow, wow! This video is seriously incredible. Carrie Underwood accompanied the PS22 Chorus in one of her songs, Good Girl. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many kids with such huge personalities before. So glad that I kept going in Reddit and found this amazing masterpiece.

The PS22 Chorus is made up of 5th graders from Public School 22 at Stanten Island, NY (Graniteville). It was started in 2000 by the school’s music teacher, and it looks like they’ve been going strong ever since. It’s completely easy to see why as they really make the music come alive just by being themselves. They’ve got a ton of fans, and have just added another. Simple AMAZING!!!!

– thanks Reddit for helping me find them

Bat Cat by Ardee

Need a good start to your Friday? Well, enjoy this:

Yes, I love Batman. Anything related to him is obviously going to be a plus. This find on StumbleUpon and Reddit has me dying with laughter.

This adorable creation featuring Basketball-Kitty and Pingpong Mouse singing Bat Cat was created by Ardee Blancas (aka NeoSlashott). This is something that would qualify as a guilty pleasure (especially when you can’t stop watching it). It looks like it’s going to be an addiction for a lot of people besides me. Spread this around because Ardee deserves the fans for this one!
