Learning The Ropes

http://youtu.be/abG2p9MwVRo

It’s Friday and I thought that I’d forward this hilarious Pixar short called “Lifted”  that Reddit rediscovered.

You know what it’s like when you’re trying on the wheel for the very first time, and you have someone grading your performance. Sweats, brain-freeze, all-thumbs syndrome, and so much more. Whatever you studied is gone with the wind, and BSing your way through it seems like a really bad approach (especially when your thumbs control stupendous tech like this guy). This is what learning the ropes is all about. Until you figure out how to use the ropes, all they do is bind. Until they don’t…

And then suddenly, you know what to do. And you get the right to strut. And laugh at the silliness that all newcomers bring to the lesson. As always, Pixar shines. I love these guys!

Check out more upcoming wonders from Pixar, brought to you by their biggest fans.

Yeah, This Is What Passion Sounds Like

I’ve been more than addicted to the song, Somebody That I Used To Know (original by Gotye, then redone by Walk Off The Earth), but I’ve never heard a jaw-dropping acoustic version of it until now.

And can I say that WOW, this is the passion that I spoke about earlier. This is what real passion sounds like. It can’t be bought. It can’t be mass-produced. It’s hard to truly replicate if your heart’s not in it.

But it’s just sheer perfection when your intentions are purely about creating. Like Mike Dawes does in this video. And in this one as well:

Seriously….that is soooo sweet!!!! I wish that I had this kind of talent. Thanks for the inspiration, Mike!

– thanks again Reddit

Actors Against Acting Athletes

First of all, let’s be real: this spot has Gary Oldman in it. Need I say more? The guy is a flipping genius of an actor. So when you hear this PSA come from someone as accomplished as him, well, you have to laugh. Here’s a creation from the ever-prolific Jimmy Kimmel making us think just a little harder (’cause we can all use more of that).

Money and popularity do not automatically equate to talent. No, not that raw talent stuff, but the kind of “I do this because I love it” kind of obsession that has people repeatedly creating the most outrageous mind-blowing hits that have people gaping in awe. We all have some kind of talent that needs to be nurtured. Not through buying badges and accreditation, but through actual honest-to-goodness dedication to creating something that speaks to you first of all.

If it doesn’t speak to you, then how will it find the words to speak to others outside of you?

just saying…

– found through Reddit, of course

Sweatshoppe

This incredible Vimeo video is the creation of the new media art duo known as Sweatshoppe (aka Blake Shaw and Bruno Levy). They have an art style that uses a technology that they created to “paint” or wheatpaste their videos on architecture through the use of an electronic paint roller and custom software. I’ve never seen anything like this! Wow, incredible innovation that allows them to share their live video collages with a different kind of depth.

Needless to day, they were one of the winners of a 2012 Vimeo award. And don’t forget to check out their site for more of their mind-blowing (and award winning) work.

Jennifer’s Armor

I was going through Juxtapoz when I caught this gorgeous image called Armor by Jennifer Hom. Jennifer creates some incredibly brilliant illustrations that centers around her love for fairy tales and magic. For those of us who thrive on fantasies in vivid colors, here’s an artist who creates them in abundance. She’s definitely going to be an artist to watch grow.

Check out her blog and site to keep up with her amazing work. Absolutely wonderful work at that! Here’s another image that she did while she was “balancing boredom and productivity”. It’s called Pangolin. I’m scared to see how good she is when she’s fully concentrating! I love how she dabbles with history.

Advice I Wish I’d Had Earlier

So, was this scene in Peter Pan your favorite one too? I love this tattoo (on Piccsy) because it’s definitely one of my favorite scenes from the story.

The flying scene reminds of the one thought that’s sustained me throughout life: NEVER stop dreaming. I don’t think it’s immature to want to make yourself a better person, and dreaming is a good way to make yourself strive to be MORE than you were the day before. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. In that vein, I thought about all of the advice that I wish I’d had earlier in life. Something like:

  • Your belief should never be outweighed by someone else’s (no matter how much more important they seem)
  • Everything that we now accept started out as someone else’s dreams
  • You’re worth whatever you want to be worth (so don’t let someone else put a number on you)
  • Your belief in yourself can cushion the impact on the wall you’ll eventually hit (and allow you to stand up and keep moving)
  • It’s not easy to stand apart from everyone else, but it is allowed
  • Someone else’s dreams have allowed us to reach the unknown, and our dreams will create the new unknowns

Now more than ever, we need these dreams. And it’s going to take a lot of effort to get past those who want to stomp on them. Here’s some advice: Don’t let them stop you from dreaming.

Brain Sharing

I just found this 2009 Good video on YouTube, and found it pretty accurate for a discussion we’ve all been circling lately: IP. Lincoln Schatz is a video artist who wants to start brain sharing with people that he admires so that he could see the world through their eyes. And the conversation led to the conclusion that he retained the knowledge he learned during the process after he gave the brain back to the original owner.

This is pretty much how we all invent the worlds in our heads. As people have been saying for ages, all creations are inspired by some predecessor. There will be differences as we incorporate our uniqueness into the new output, but the original idea also lives on. And that’s the key right there, “the original content lives on”. This talk that our governments and IP stakeholders use that copying is theft refuse to realize that their own actions are dependent on the existence of prior actions and ideas. If they were left to their own devices, there is a significant chance that the majority of creativity would not evolve as quickly as it does. Why? Because people are using the originals as the foundation for new building blocks.

Nothing is stolen. But something is definitely created, and it’s nothing like the original. That’s what living is all about: Sharing is Caring (it’s a bit grainy but the tune is catchy, as is the message).

p.s. Little kids are taught this lesson at a very early age (though it’s forgotten as they get older – like when they’re adults): Sharing by Notebook Babies

A Funny Thing Happened…

http://youtu.be/QAMgkpQYOSQ

Ha, this should get your Monday off to a great start. Marvel released a one-shot with Agent Coulson after he left Tony Stark’s lab. The title of this sweet little clip is “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor’s Hammer”. I don’t think that anything more needs to be said, except enjoy this clip with our favorite secret agent. Considering what he went through with the Avengers, I think that he deserves the spot light on his own (and the donuts). I seriously hope that the commentor who said that we will indeed see the agent again is right, because I love this character.

Thanks Marvel for this treat! Love the music. And thanks Reddit for the find.

Starting Slowly

Sometimes the way we choose to get comfortable makes little sense to those around us. We all have those little quirks that no one but us can understand. I caught this pic of Squarish Wheel’s “doofus” on Reddit, and had to laugh at the sheer adorableness of this creature (as well as his choice on how he uses his bed).

It’s Monday so we’re all struggling a little to get a start (especially in this atrocious heat), so I figured that you’d appreciate the sweetness of nap time. Enjoy! Isn’t that the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?!?!

And A Few More Thoughts From PDF 2012

The last thought that I had after listening to many of the talks at PDF 2012 is that people are tired of things staying the same and have lost their trust of status quo. Unfortunately, unlike how Alex Torpey believes, we do have a significant status quo to convert into enthusiastic participants. The status quo is tired of life, work, social mobility, and so much more being stagnant from generation to generation. We hear all of the time that people can make it if they work hard enough. To this I and many other say, yeah right. There are millions are people working themselves to exhaustion with little improvement. That has to change.

People will engage when money and efforts go to worthwhile causes, just as Dave Karpf states. Throwing money away in political campaigns is definitely not a worthwhile cause in most people’s view (unless you’re guaranteed a return as the elite get). But the Internet shows on a daily basis that creative output that makes the world just a little better is being bankrolled by ordinary people everywhere through sites like Kickstarter and Etsy (to name a few). Citizens aren’t engaging politicians because there is no two-way dialogue. Society is interactive. So is the Internet. It’s high time that the rest of the world that status quo supports get this fundamental fact. A 40-60% turnout in voting is nothing to be proud of. And this is what our politics has led us to: a disenchanted public who has lost interest in stagnation. But things are getting interesting once again. Since 2011, people are re-engaging because they’re being forced to by attacks on their civil liberties and human rights from their own governments. People still aren’t excited about elections. But they are very excited about the future’s potential that can be glimpsed via the Internet, the biggest democracy our world has ever created.

Here are a couple of talks that speak about the wish of the citizenry. They’re much more honest than what we’re hearing in political campaigns:
