More PDF 2012 – Carne Ross and The Revolution Of Us

Carne Ross used to be part of the establishment until he became disillusioned with it. Now he is part of the Leaderless Revolution, which he has written about and lives. He believes that we need to take back our agency and work together to create a new system that embrace the fullness of Us. A lot of us feel the same way as Carne.

Most of us find politics to be unpalatable. Carne lived it, so he truly knows about the shadows of politics that we all find repugnant. When someone from within that world that controls our global society tells us that he has no use for it and plans to rebuild, then we too should take note. Go out and vote has little meaning anymore. But it doesn’t mean that we throw away the lessons we learned. It means that we pick the most important factors, and use them to help us model something new for the 21st century and beyond.

We need to take control back, and literally rebuild the world around us. Not just the way we live, but the why and how. It will mean no less than our future survival. It’s really that important. Ignore the elections. Go out and collaborate with someone else who has an idea that replaces status quo. That’s the key to our future, and it’s everywhere. Just like Carne says.

This, then, is the new politics for a disorderly world. The defenders of the status quo claim that only their methods can maintain order. They are, in fact, achieving the opposite. The politics proposed here, and already evident in Occupy and elsewhere, can foment a deeper order, where people are connected to one another, reweaving our tattered social fabric, where work is fulfilling and responsible, and where everyone in society is given their proper voice and their interests are accounted for.” – from his article on The Nation

Female Bits, The Internet, And Us

Deanne Zandt spoke out at the Personal Democracy Forum recently in a thoughtful talk about the new power of the Internet. 2011 and 2012 have been banner years for the introduction of the Internet to the world. The world that we all know is changing because of this immense and interactive group who is no longer shy about their voices. We’ve known the stupidity and disengagement of status quo, and came to the Internet in order to make ourselves known. We found a place that listens and engages with our voices and views. No one in this digital domain is about to give up this power, because for the first time we have the opportunity to change the physical world to one that we want to exist in it.

Networks are wrapping around hierarchies, they’re infiltrating them, and they’re starting to break them down and dismantle them altogether.” – Deanne Zandt

We have entered the age of the Radical Power of the Internet. This is a new collective that is amorphous but dedicated. It surpasses the physical concept of the Internet, and creates a true global hive that is working together as never before under the word democracy. To many who live and love this digital domain, this is the true concept of democracy: people power that creates, assists, and shares in order to make a collaborative world. This is the world that we are trying to get governments around the world to understand. We are beyond the antiquated structures of gentility. Our digital world is large, messy, noisy, and argumentative, but it is a free one that we will fight for at all costs because we know the consequences if we fail.

Here are a few more talks about the Internet from PDF12 that resonate and provide more calls to collaborate for our collective future:

Seeing Past Ourselves

To really see what’s around us, we need to see past ourselves first to understand the view. Anais Nin understood that our vision can be skewed by a simple thing: us. Our view of the world is colored by who we are. It seems that the easiest way to clear your view is to understand yourself first: your thoughts, ideals, dreams, and everything else that makes you you. Once you get that image in sight, it will be your guide to how you interpret your views of the world around you.

If you’re not seeing everything in their true colors, then maybe you need to check and see if there is something blocking you and try to change that. Those who are the most open to the universe are the ones who are most able to adapt themselves when the universe throws them a curve ball. And since that happens pretty regularly, then you can assume that you must also be open to adaptation so that you will be able to see the possibilities, no matter how improbable, that lay waiting to be discovered. The universe is a pretty amazing place. We should be living up to its examples, don’t you think?

Nothing Stands In Christine’s Way

http://youtu.be/o1uGywpkzW4

Ok, there are a lot of onions on Reddit again. Here’s a portion of the episode (starts at 2:30), Master Chef, from season 3 which features a surprising contestant. Her name is Christine Ha and she wants to win the white apron. She is helped out by her husband, John. And she is…blind. She seems like the sweetest person you’ll ever meet, and she clearly loves cooking. In her case, her blindness helps because she has to taste everything she uses in her recipes so that she knows what ingredient she is holding. That is getting personal with your food and a brilliant way to create with taste.

But the best part is her attitude. I really respect her for her positive attitude as well as for her dedication to pursue what she loves. It’s clear that nothing stands in Christine’s way. A pretty good lesson for all of us to take to heart. If she can do it with her challenges, then there’s nothing stopping the rest of us.

Everyday, the “disabled” provide us with lessons to learn. You’re only disabled if you let it get in your way. Lesson learned!

– Get to know Christine through her blog where she also proves that she loves to write. And read about what the judges thought about her on the Huffington Post. I’m going to get tissues to stop the onion tears.

Coca Cola Security Camera

http://youtu.be/auNSrt-QOhw

So Reddit has once again uncovered another great video. This one is an advert by Coca Cola Latin America and International Security Camera Association, and it shows that even security cameras can catch random acts of unexpected kindness, love, and hilarity. It seems that the Association wanted to debunk the assumption that security cameras only capture the bad stuff. Honestly, I think they did a pretty good job with this video. I mean seriously, how can you not expect happiness from a Coca Cola ad?! It’s in their secret recipe or something, isn’t it?

– thanks for the smiles, Reddit

Secrets

Note: This is probably the most honest story I’ve ever written. I wrote it years ago after going through several rough patches in life. I never intended to share it. Until I felt its call…

(btw – I’m fine. It’s a story.)

_________________________

It was dark and stormy, perfect weather to match her mood. As she watched the birds being thrown around by the heavy winds, she had to laugh at their predicament. There were other living creatures who were in the exact same situation that she was in. Thrown around helplessly, carelessly, as they tried to straighten their flight to no avail. The winds were just too powerful for them. She knew how that was. The winds were too powerful for her as well. Laughing aloud, she walked back to her car so that she could return home. If she didn’t, she’d be getting a call from someone. Someone always called to check up on her. Like they could do something to make it better. Yeah, right, like it was really that simple!

Entering the house, she sighed as she looked around the dungeon of her own making. Hers and his. Things had started out well for them, having fallen in love and gotten married without any questions. And then it set in: LIFE. It always did and she had been expecting it, wondering why it had taken so long to catch up to her happiness. It usually didn’t let her experience happiness for this long and she was glad that things fell into place as expected. It was uncomfortable living under false pretenses. Sure, everyone called her a pessimist but she was actually a realist, born from painful experiences throughout her whole life.

She turned on the computer and was soon immersed in the world that had since taken over her life. He didn’t understand that she loved this world because it was in her control. A little tiny box that opened the world through her fingertips. A world also easy to close with a single button. QUIT. What little control that she had, she didn’t want to relinquish. There was so little of it left that she was beginning to question if this whole thing was even worthwhile any longer. She had her doubts although she would never voice it aloud. The few times that she had had been painful for all involved, but especially for her. Everyone had talked to her, lectured her, explained that things would get better. Made her sign up for stupid counseling. She hated their optimism and hated them for trying to force her to be happy. What a useless emotion! She never got much done when she was happy, only when she was sad.

You’d think that after all of these years that people would know better. How long have I been telling them that this is the way that I like myself? Why should I change to make them feel better? What about me? Doesn’t anyone give a damn about what I want?

Punching at the keys to enter her comments, she had to smile at the response. Here was someone who knew what she was going through. And he was in the same exact place that she was in. It was good to have these attachments that demanded nothing from her, only listened. At least someone listened to what she had to say. For so long, she was beginning to think that she was talking to walls. Whenever an uncomfortable topic came about, no one wanted to hear it. They quickly changed the subject, like if they ignored it, the pain would go away. Well, it went away for them, but what about the person who was actually going through it? Continue reading

Doing It For Love

Rodney Mullen is known in the skateboarding world. He’s the Godfather of Skateboarding. He’s also known outside of it because he still continues to do what he does for love. What’s so awesome about this Ted talk at USC is that his love comes through every word he speaks. And wow is he a deep thinker. The guy also sounds like the most approachable guy in the world. This is what doing what you love looks like. Just like Rodney.

He might feel like an outsider. But he is one of the most humane creatives I’ve ever heard. This is the type of guy that you want to listen to. Listen to his words and then go do what you feel the need to do. I just got so energized hearing what Rodney had to say. He’s my age and has done so much. Man, I am letting myself go free and ignoring the doubts from now on. Screw the status quo around me who is drowning us, making us defend ourselves while we’re in “the turtle posture”.

Doing it for love. Create for the sake of creating. Share it and see it grow through our ever-strengthening collaboration breathing around the world. If others don’t get it, don’t sweat it. You’re the one who needs to get it right. Then, others will jump on board. It’s just how we roll.

Never Let Them Give Up

Seriously, Reddit always has amazing stories (like helping a guy with cancer get a dream trip before he dies) that touch even the most cynical of hearts. But somehow, this brief posting of a hipster comic store owner who was mistaken for Superman posted by apextek really hit home for the simple reason that “Superman” let the kid keep believing because he remembered how important dreams are. Important enough that we should never let them give up on the hopes they bring with them:

Seriously, Mr. Clark Kent (aka Superman), that was an incredible thing that you did for this kid. We all wish that others would treat our dreams with equal respect. Bravo for letting him keep his dream alive (especially since he’s already living a tough life)!

The Brilliance Of Old And New

It’s a political campaign like no other – perhaps it’s the uncampaign that is emerging with this new era that is gaining in fire. Politics is a smash of the old and the new, so why not have protest follow in its wake? bprentice shows just how easy it can be done with the ever-popular chief of New York and his pepper-spray enforcing ways using that age-old quote of Marie Antoinette (yes, we know she didn’t actually say this but it still works). This is the second such ad I’ve seen where Bloomberg’s face has been superimposed on the body of another in a political statement that is actually quite catchy.

Politicians can no longer be assured that their PR machines will be up to the task of working against true public sentiment. No matter how many news media outlets they buy, they’ll never be able to afford the word on the street. That’s the domain of the rest of the “unwashed massed” (as they like to call us) and it is the land of free speech. And free expression. Which is all sublimely loud and expressive. If we’ve got to be imprisoned by brain-numbing campaign ads ever moment of our day (as well as by undemocratic government actions), then you can expect that works like these will only increase in their brilliance. And they’re brought to you by the agency of mankind – found everywhere.

Notes In My Head

Highs and lows

that cascade in shimmering tones

seek to replicate

ecstasies unknown.

The head is full

of uncut gemstones

awaiting the blade

of creativity honed.

Will they succeed

in tripping from my mind

twisting and turning

sent out for others to find.

The notes in my head

they ring so true,

but setting them down

is part of paying my dues.

So my muse continues to whisper

knowing that I hear

only stopping

when I create without fear.

Our lives intertwined,

our feeling sublime.
