Now You Know It Anyway

Polder Animation created a story, Now You Know It Anyway, that tells the battle that all writers (actually all creatives) fight. We all create because we have something to share, just like the young heroine of this short. And once we’ve created something and set it loose into the world, exactly how do we deal with the expectations of society?

  • What is it worth?
  • Will it make an impact?
  • Will anyone be interested?
  • Will they understand?

Those are just a few of the questions that all creators ask of themselves as they set onto the path of creating for their livelihood. And just like the little writer says in response to “How much is the story worth?”, she really doesn’t know how to answer that ageless question because she’s already shared it with the listener who now knows it anyways. For many creatives, the thought of compensation is a hard one to brood over because they know that they would have created the things that they do whether they knew of their audience or not.

Frankly, most creative types are surprised when their creations gain a following. At least that’s how I feel when I create. And obviously the story that Polder Animation created shows that they too encounter the same dilemmas. It sure will be great when the world finally tries to understand the true motivations of so many creative types who don’t feel like they fit in this materialistic world. Yes, we all have to eat and live (all creatives get that), but we also have to feel and dream. And that’s the task that creatives everywhere take on.

Making the world feel just a little bit more so that everyone thinks a little harder about their words and actions. That seems like a pretty important task to me. What do you think?

Bravo to Polder Animation for making us think about this very important question. Now, lets hope that everyone starts to understand the true value of creativity. It’s crucial to our survival!

Silence Television In Vector

While marveling at the works of deftbeat, I also came across another remarkable vector illustrator who has a distinct love of the technical and human worlds. Gianmarco Magnani is a magnet to someone like me who loves to draw vector illustrations of mechanical parts. This image, Bass, for the band Sixty Watts is a gorgeous example of the beauty that can be found in close-ups of individual parts on a guitar (or machine, etc.). Yep, I’m a geek who still loves to look at exploded diagrams because of the intricately detailed beauty that is found in assemblies of all kinds. And Gianmarco is a master of turning technical vector illustration into fine art.

Follow him on his blog to see his latest creations. And check out his work on Society 6 as well – you can take one home with you to grace your walls.  I’m drawn to this one myself:

Wow, another illustrator to admire and follow. Thanks for the inspiration, Gianmarco!

I Can’t Hear You

I thought that this image by Jejomar Limbo (aka deftbeat) on Cuded is a pretty good representation on how a lot of us are feeling: I can’t hear you!!! Maybe a bit shell-shocked and even overloaded? Jejomar is a really incredible vector illustrator of the human form, complete with in-your-face emotions that compel you to look closer. All I can say is that I hope he comes out with a sketchbook because I love his style!

It’s hard to pick a favorite since all of his work is soooo good, but I think that this is definitely one of them:

Go check out Jejomar’s sites, so that you too can enjoy his amazing vectors. I’m still gazing in awe at his work!

Macrowikinomics

So, all of this week, I’ve been feeling really put out. Like a horse that got put out into the middle of a dry desert with no horizon in sight. Yeah, I figured that the elections had partly to do with this. Every two to four years, we are expected to vote in new delegates that will help lead us into the future. And every decade, that lost promise slaps us in the face because of our naivete.

It’s especially frustrating that we still do some of the most important things in such antiquated ways. And it’s in direct contrast with how the rest of the world outside of politics (and its associate fiscal cabals) works. Take this video, for example, showing real world global collaborations that are literally changing the way that people think. Though we are still in the infant stage of this movement, the pressures pushing back against the status quo are increasing daily. Thank everything that is wonderful for this, because I needed to go to the end of this week with more hope than the last election just instilled in me (which was non-existent).

Macrowikinomics – we’re living it right now. We need to start strengthening the partnerships to do away with the opposition that thrives on living in the past.

Connected the Film

Tiffany Shlain questioned what it meant to be connected in the 21st century. She had a personal connection to the idea because of her reciprocal desire to unplug from the world, at the same time she co-founded the Webby Awards. But her own personal experiences led her to understand that we are all interdependent, even as we fight for our independence. This movie, Connected, is another example of just how often we collaborate with one another, and depend on the sharing of knowledge and experiences. This award winning film is evidence of that fact, as it was made through cloud filmmaking.

Read the press releases that describes Tiffany’s journey towards Connected the Film. And the see if you can connect with the film itself. It sounds like it’ll be a pretty incredible ride that’s depicting our path in our collective future.

The Cause of (My) Depression

Sorry but I have to get this out so that I can refocus. Check out this image by Donkey Hotey that describes the train wreck that is known as the US elections:

Honestly, what’s most disgusting has been the overwhelming juggernaut of money in politics. My inbox has looked like a mine field of money requests from political groups. Just because I signed a few petitions, suddenly I was added to a lot of politician’s mailing lists without my permission. And it’s been the biggest source of my depression. I can’t even fathom how fast our problems would be solved if these greedy people, corporations, and lobby groups would just put the money where it’s needed. And here’s a hint: it’s NOT needed in any election cycle.

Thanks to all of you political groups, I am doing something long overdue to set myself free.

I’ve solved my problem by declaring my non-allegiance. If you’re a group who seriously wants to make change happen, then I’m listening. If you’re part of The Machine, then may your bolts rust in perpetuity. I’m done being depressed because our society is being trampled by inequity caused by broken politics and social injustice. I’m ignoring all of you, and finding people to work with who will create a viable replacement to ineffectual governing. I’m done being frustrated with politics and ineffectual leaders in every sector.

Party of choice: NO PARTY

Because I honestly don’t understand what is wrong with these people?! (well, I do but…)

A Beautiful Story – The Girl and the Fox

http://vimeo.com/43332921

Stories of revenge don’t necessarily turn into a beautiful story, unless they’re being told by someone like Base14. It seems that this story is something new from this group, but it is definitely one that should be shared. Especially since it’s a story based solely on actions, and not words. Yes, we all know that actions speak louder than words, but the story of The Girl and the Fox is absolute proof of this belief. That this story is winning awards is to be expected. The visuals, the musical accompaniment, and most definitely the storyline are so smoothly integrated that the experience would not exist without them so closely intertwined. That’s the hallmarks of any good story: you are so deeply immersed that you feel a part of it.

It also helps that this story “speaks” about looking beyond actions, to observe the spirit behind them. This is the most powerful way to learn about the world around you. Rarely are actions straightforward, and the girl learns this lesson and its results the hard way. But it’s worth it because she sees the fox in a new light.

Watch The Girl and the Fox and keep your eyes out on these guys. I have a feeling that they’ll only get better if they keep this emotion alive!

– thanks Vimeo for continually sharing such amazing stories

A Ghostly Lesson

See the pilot here: http://vimeo.com/43180571

You know that I couldn’t resist this little masterpiece, right? A ghostly encounter between a little girl and a famed composer. One who goes by the name of Chopin. And this is just the start of the adventures to be found in the famed cemetery Père Lachaise by the utterly prolific creative society known as ChezEddy (they also did Mr. Overtime). Luckily we will have one very willing pupil by the name of Lucie to lead us on these adventures. I for one cannot wait to see the finished film that is being co-developed by ChezEddy and DFEA.

The Ghosts of Père Lachaise will be a wonder to behold. It’s easy to tell after looking at this pilot! Bravo for all of the hard work put into this gem. We eagerly await the next chapter!

Conquests by Frankie Rulez!!!

The idea of world domination (or even galactic domination) is hardly a new one. It’s what our history has partially been built on. But this new look by San Charoenchai has got to be one of the most hilarious takes on the subject. We watch an adventurous alien wander the universe, claiming unknown planets as he transports through space. Each new site prompts a new flag stating “Frankie Rulez!!!“, though he doesn’t stay long enough to figure out the locale. Until finally, the locale responds in kind. The ending is utterly hilarious as his destiny collides with his past. Awesome job at looking at the lighter side of conquests (if such a thing even exists?!).

– and thanks once again Vimeo
