Virtual Choir Is Back – VC3

You’ve all heard me rave about Virtual Choir, the brain child of Eric Whitacre and an amazing collection of singers from around the world. Well, Virtual Choir 3, Water Nights, was just released and it’s as incredible as the first two. This time, 3746 videos from 73 countries participated in another soul-stopping performance that takes choir music into the digital realm. This is the power of technology that is used with love. It has the ability to lift each and every one of us to new heights just by simply experiencing the sounds of thousands of voice working together in perfect harmony. Eric’s Virtual Choir shows the beauty that we humans are capable of achieving when we collaborate. One more reminder of how we will all move forward into the future: Together.

p.s. If you can, support Eric and the Virtual Choir by getting the new album from iTunes. And don’t forget to leave Eric a note of appreciation for this labor of love. We all benefit from his genius.

O Emperor – Po

This music video, Po, is an incredible collaboration between the musical talents of O Emperor, the illustrative talents of Plastic Zoo, and the animation talent of Jono Candlish Wilson. Needless to say, the smooth melodies from this Irish band blends with the jaw-dropping animations produced by some incredible stylization that you really don’t see all that often. It’s like gorgeous meets scary in the best of ways to create a mesmerizing story line that belies the gentleness of the sounds. Wow, this was an incredible collaboration that shows what happens when each talent builds on the other to create a truly beautiful masterpiece. Just lovely.

Your Way Isn’t Everyone’s Way

So, even with the bad aspects of Amazon, I still use them for one simple reason: there are small businesses who have storefronts that are being helped through Amazon’s network (I’ve unfortunately given up on my local brick-and-mortar stores for a variety of reasons). Case in point: I was looking for a technical book and found out that some smaller bookstores carried the same book at comparable prices to Amazon. Sure, there were some independent stores that had outrageous prices and I can’t imagine how they stay in business. In my opinion, they’re creating their own Catch-22 crisis that will never allow them to get out of the hole they’re probably in. But I did find one vendor who had a great customer rating and the product that I needed, so I choose him instead of Amazon (which I do whenever I can).

What concerned me was that when Amazon completed their part of the order expeditiously, they decided to note that the independent vendor hadn’t responded to their immediate request for a turnaround time. Now, for one thing, there’s no way that independent stores can respond in the same manner as a global conglomerate, and yet in the business world this behavior is expected of anyone large or small. That’s unreasonable. There’s not a small business out there that can afford to have someone on staff and a computer system that processes orders 24/7. Was I upset that I didn’t get a quick response from the independent. NO, because I realize the choice that I make when I go with a smaller company. Sometimes, emergencies crop up and no one can always be available to support every customer’s whim. Or perhaps, he has more humane store hours than what Big Business expects – and that’s totally reasonable.

What You Could Be Doing

You can always count on Reddit for their weird and utterly addicting sense of humor. I for one visit and follow just to find those unimaginables that can turn around a rocky day. Not that today is a rocky day, but it does deserve this hilarious masterpiece courtesy of…. FEEEENNNNTTTOOOONNN. Yes, Fenton is obviously a dog who seems to think that he’s a deer herder (basically a sheep herder, but braver). This short clip was shared and has been viewed almost 6 million times since it was uploaded last year (for obvious reasons). If you have a pet, then you probably recognize the exasperation of this dog’s owner. If you don’t (like me), then you can apply it to any number of frustrating episodes in your life that were directly related to the actions of family or friend. Because, there’s always going to be a Fenton, and you’ll love them for who they are…no matter what crazy things they might do.

Yep, this is what you could be doing instead of what you are doing. Feel better? ohh, my stomach hurts from laughing too much…

Here’s more of the story on YouTube.

Thinking About Ramifications

I was launched (by @mathewi) into an incredibly smart post about the ramifications that those in charge don’t seem to see when they make public policy that clearly steps on the rights of the people. But the important part of the post wasn’t that rights were being threatened, but that our leaders are not seeing the pitfalls that will come into being when you take broad actions that can not take into account the important details that affect the true image and the final outcome.

Read “I hereby resign” on Raganwald’s posterus to see what I mean. Continue reading

Dear Politics Of Money…

My Inbox has been exploding since I started to voice my opinions out loud in the form of petition support and editorial writing. Somehow my actions have given so many other groups the impression that it is now ok to target and (try to) use me for their own personal campaigns, as they do the rest of the citizens of the world. Well, as one of those people, I’m saying that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. First, it was all of those marketers out there with a product or service to sell (which, by the way, have continue unabated, despite my spam blocks). Now that we’re in another political season, it is reaching a point of absolute horror. We try to block you, and you change methods. We unsubscribe, but it continues as though we never even wrote. We write scathing letters that just fly over your heads. Seriously, what is it going to take to get you to understand??? Yeah, the lack of engagement from the public (or flat out ignoring you) just leads to this…

So, let me make this clear in a public way: Continue reading

BBC Covers Wikileaks

Wikileaks – The Secret Life of A Superpower by the BBC (part 1). Watch Part 2 here.

http://youtu.be/nu98q1WmP_M

I saw this video forwarded this weekend by @zephoria (aka Danah Boyd), and she is absolutely correct that this is a tremendously fascinating two-part documentary BBC series about the big Wikileaks haul provided by Bradley Manning. We all know that he’s been convicted by the US military of being a traitor, and yet this story tells of a two-headed coin that clearly shows that international diplomacy really isn’t clean, patriotic, or even as democratic as we’ve been led to believe.

People who work in our governments, and the people who view them from the outside, live in two separate worlds that barely understand one another. Their motivations are beyond different. While both believe in loving their country, their actions diverge so drastically that it takes something like Wikileaks to allow us all to understand how our world really operates. Diplomacy is about the changing of hands of favors, sometimes unpalatable to all participants involved. And this is where the true nature of it diverges from the ideals of the common man and woman. Viktor Hertz Immortalizes Bob Marley

We’ve all heard the exciting news that a new movie based on the life of Bob Marley (directed by Kevin MacDonald) is set to be released on April 20, 2012. If you haven’t seen it, then check out the trailer at the movie site. It will be an amazing story because it will give us a lot of rare footage and interviews from those who knew him best, all with the blessings of the Marley family.

To commemorate such a huge event, the ever popular Swedish artist Viktor Hertz was commissioned to come up with a poster, and he really did a wonderful job of depicting the man who is loved by so many because of his love for them. Do you think that Viktor captured the iconic nature of a man who inspired so many?

Hubble’s Hidden Treasures Contest

There are a lot of space enthusiasts out there, and the ESA and Hubble are calling for all of you. They’re starting a crowd-sourcing contest that will allow you to delve into the vast archives of the Hubble Space Telescope to see what kind of wondrous images you can uncover to be shared with the world. All of the open-source software tools are linked on their site, so you just need to bring your eyes and your imagination to the screen. All of the instructions needed can be found at their site and at the Hubble’s Hidden Treasures site. I wonder what amazing images we’ll all uncover? The contest ends on May 31, 2012. Happy hunting!

Chuckling At The Male Mind

Being a female, I still don’t quite always understand how the male mind works. And it’s clear that the male mind is equally boggled about how the female body works. But this has got to be the most entertaining visualization about a woman’s “special” time known as THAT time of the month. Or the word at the end of a sentence. Yeah, my hubby used to laugh because I couldn’t say that word in front of him when we first got married (it’s been years, I’m over it).

I’m chuckling because it’s actually quite a good representation of how women feel during those oh so special days. So, the next time one of you guys wants to hug (or do more) your woman during her cycle (or she asks you to buy her supplies), well, remember this image and prepare to feel a little sorry for her. She now knows what’s really going on in her body. Ha ha ha. I can’t stop chuckling at how cute the male mind can be sometimes.

– thanks Reddit – your minds are so fascinating
