Penny4NASA and more

Space exploration is more than a pipe dream for many people, including myself. I recently wrote an article on Urban Times about #Penny4NASA, the people’s efforts to increase the NASA budget to a penny on the dollar. Because this fight (like so many others) is important, I’m continuing my support here as well, as I’m all about nurturing inspiration. This is a government agency which is funded by the taxpayers’ dollars, and it has been achieving returns unlike any that a corporate shareholder is likely to receive. We’re not talking about $$ returns, because the activities that NASA, other international space agencies, and the scientific community pursue go way beyond fiscal and have long-lasting effects that change our society. We know how little we’ve truly gotten back from the institutions that we revere, like financial and educational (to name a few). We’re living the shattering consequences right now all over the world. So, when are we going to start taking our futures seriously?

We thrive in a technological age largely because of the programs that agencies like NASA produce through innovation. Yet each year, our government’s outlook becomes more and more short-term to the point that we are now on the precipice of absolute destruction (having passed social stagnation decades ago). Our society needs to return to long-term investments and outlooks. Today’s investors are looking for a good fiscal return, but they’re not seeing the need to protect the public domain. I believe that the majority of our problems can be solved if we simply choose the right targets for the right reasons. If we’re going to be greedy, we need to look past the tangible, because that’s where the returns are astronomical in terms of development as well as potential. We need to:

  • Explore our universe to better understand ourselves;
  • Understand that everything is interconnected, so we need to know how we affect one another;
  • Allow audaciousness to re-enter visionary expeditions;
  • Remember that science and art are necessary parts of the human experience;
  • Collaborate globally on projects that impact humanity;
  • Support those groups which actually give us a chance to reach up and touch the stars and beyond;
  • Never stop dreaming BIG, which will always be possible if we embrace the craziest possibility and make them reality.

This and more can be accomplished by helping NASA get the budget they deserve and need. Because our world needs innovators more than ever, and NASA has the biggest dreams of us all. And that’s worth protecting and nurturing.

p.s. They also have another petition site, Penny4NASA.net, which allows for you to get directly involved in contacting your representatives in Congress and the White House. Now’s the time to make your voice heard by those people who actually decide NASA’s budget. We need to make them realize that the decision isn’t only theirs.

Standing Up

When you see a politician willing to take a stand against injustice, then it’s news. It’s also sad that we consider this to be so, because it’s what their job entails. And yet, so few leaders do the good that people need in order to have a democratic country. Senator Eric Adams is a NY senator who is standing up against the blatant ignorance spouted by Geraldo Rivera and many others who blame a hoodie for a teen’s tragic death which is still awaiting a proper investigation in Florida. We all wonder if we’ll ever get the true story, while we also realize that ignorant stereotypes are tearing us apart.

We’ve been bombarded with irresponsible laws in this country, and it is becoming an epidemic. But it’s not just laws that are being manipulated, but people as well. Starbucks is in the middle of a war with NOM because the company has chosen to send a positive message against prejudice of gays. NOM sees it as some kind of moral attack and is trying to have Starbucks boycotted by their customers. In response, Sum Of Us has put together a card in support of Starbuck’s actions, and its supporters far outnumber (last count near 270,000) the boycotters. One more instance proving that morality isn’t narrow-minded.

More and more people are starting to stand up against injustice. We’ve got a long way to go, but at least we’re not alone in the effort. Journalists (citizen and otherwise) are telling the stories that we really need to be concerned about if we want a more just society. People are protesting about corruption around the world. Kids are starting projects to help the needy. Scientists are pushing back against the false words of corporate interest. As each person stands up, the holes in justice gradually become occupied by people who protect everything good and injustice lessens little by little. The social era is ramping up to become a powerful force of good against some dangerous voices of intolerance and ignorance.

OMG, The Details

When you see a title like this from Reddit, then you know that you’re going to be curious. Needless to say, my jaw is on the ground at the intricacy of the Mehndi that she wears. I honestly have never seen anything this beautiful, and I would love to see it up close. Seriously, MIND BLOWN. There are so many beautiful details that come from the Hindu culture. Marriage customs are always elaborate, no matter the locale, but the Mehndi tradition really is one that’s truly inspiring. Postthisnow wasn’t kidding with the title, “OMG, the f*!#ing detail!!!”. And congrats to postthisnow’s brother and his new wife!

Singing The Blues

Alannah Myles – Black Velvet (live, courtesy of thedudefromthesun Youtube channel)

http://youtu.be/DaHcdq_1Y-8

A song to keep you mellow into the night. Blues, the kind of soulful blues that just drives into your gut and makes you move your body to the tune. Sinuous, smooth, dripping like warm sunshine as it flows slowly through your limbs like molasses. It’s music for your soul which is singing the blues while still managing to feel brand new. This is how I like my blues – mesmerizing. How about you?

Pure Love

It’s Monday, and it’s time for a pick-me-up courtesy of Reddit. An experience of pure love like this is like no other. It doesn’t have to be a puppy – it just has to be pure. Unadulterated joy of just being in the company of someone or something that you love. Remember that feeling. Hold it close and use it to spread the joy. Keep repeating. Ahhhhh, isn’t that better?

Curiosity

When I see a quote that combines Einstein and curiosity, then I know that I’m in a good place. Curiosity is the motivation of everything that I do. Curiosity is the start of an adventure, the biggest adventure of all if that’s what you want. I’ve learned to never stop questioning, so that I always have the ability to at least try to understand something I’ve never considered before. The world is a very big place in an even bigger universe, and all of the knowledge that we know is probably a drop in the bucket.

That means that the lessons will never end. And that’s an amazing inspiration, isn’t it? Einstein continues to inspire in so many ways.

p.s. And to make things even better, Einstein’s archives are now online. I am so ready to dive in!

HAPPY

There are days when you just have to say “SCREW IT!!!” and do what makes you happy. For some, it will be something active. And for others, it will be the lure of complete inactivity. But there is nothing as joyous as watching the young as they discover the world around them, and ignore everything but the moment. So, here’s your moment of pure HAPPY, courtesy of Reddit:

Kulula – We Fly With Humor

I don’t say much about marketing, as it’s so much more than presence. But when I stumbled on this brilliant marketing message by South African Kulula Airlines on Reddit (and comments), then I knew that I found a company that is doing things right: they’re not taking themselves too seriously.

Honestly, how can you not want to board a plane that is clearly run by people who get it. You know, that “it” where the company isn’t so full of themselves that they can’t see off of their pedestal. We seriously need to take business down a notch so that it remembers what humanity is all about. It’s clear that there’s one South African airline who is doing it with a lot of smile-inducing humor.

Here’s one of the gems they use in their inflight talks:

“There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only 4 ways out of this airplane.”

I really do wish that other companies would let out their inner joker like Kulula does! This is truly what being a misfit is all about. ; )
