Power of Vulnerability

Brené Brown is a researcher with an extraordinary gift of teaching about the power of vulnerability that resides within us all. She should as she spent a decade in researching how it impacts everyone’s daily lives. But after all of the stories she heard, she still managed to pull out the one illuminating (and frustrating) factor that differentiated people: whether they had the capacity to believe that they felt worthy. But being the logical person that she is, she struggled with such an intangible finding. She struggled so much that she herself had a moment of crisis, otherwise known as a breakdown. And she had to do the one thing that she never thought she’d have to do: talk to a therapist who could help her work through her “spiritual awakening”.

Embracing your vulnerabilities is probably the single hardest thing that you’ll ever have to do. No one wants to admit to imperfection, especially the kind of imperfection that is not socially acceptable in our society. Fear, shame, despair…they’re all signs of weaknesses that we don’t approve of. But even Brené found that you’ll never become stronger if you don’t willingly embrace these “faults” or vulnerabilities. Most psychologists seem to agree that acceptance of who we are is one of the foundations for self improvement. You won’t fix what you won’t even accept as true. But truth is never filled with perfection, because there is little in life that is perfect. So, there’s no reason to beat ourselves up the way that we do.

Our hearts are what allows our brains to accept the imperfect, the seemingly impossible, and even that which we don’t want to accept. It’s the light that shines from our hearts that allows our brains to truly “see” what our heart sees. Vulnerability isn’t easy, but it is necessary.

So, repeat after Brené: I AM ENOUGH! I am worthy. I am ready. Wholeheartedly ready.

p.s. Read more about Brené on the TED blog.

Ode To The Brain

If you’re a follower of me or TED, then you’ll know all about the Symphony of Science. We all know what our brains are capable of, but have we ever thought to celebrate this most important part of us? Well, someone has as shown in the latest release, Ode To The Brain.

We not only see what it’s made of, but also what it allows us to do. It may be mysterious, but it is also an integral part of who we are as individuals. Brains may look alike physically, but the content will never ever be the same. So, we will never ever be the same, even when we are experiencing similar activities. The brain is our own private diary of everything that we’ve ever known, seen, heard, experienced, and shared. So, humanity is essentially the largest and most vibrant library we will ever know. Pretty incredible, isn’t it?

Ted 2012 has come to an end, and it sounds like it was another year full of incredible speakers. Going through the TED blog, I wanted to see what jumped out at me. Needless to say, this Vimeo video of a day on #illustraTED piqued my curiosity on how the Duarte Design team would illustrate the shining moments from The Classroom. What was so inspiring was the the team was put into timeout at 10 am because they’d exceeded Twitters quota for the day. Controversial topics that don’t get a fair exposure in education get an illustrative treatment that distills the topic down to its basics.

To See A Way or Wayseer

I’ve seriously got to thank Nicolas Sampson for talking about this INCREDIBLE video! Browsing through my other home, Urban Times, I came across this gem and succumbed to curiosity. Watch this and you will feel the inspiration fill your very soul. It really did a good job of burning my inner rebellion brighter. Just like the Apple ad did years ago (and now).

Now, I’m not pushing the Wayseer Manifesto movement, but just enjoying the uplifting message that Garret LoPorto brings to all us misfits, rebels, visionaries and non-conformists. For those of us who have always lived on the fringe and been filled with this beat, this is a welcome conversation about how we feel being the octagonal peg in the round hole. But frankly, no matter what everyone now says, the “trouble-makers” (though it’s not always intentional) have never really cared anyway about fitting in.

Are you a carrier of the flame? If you are, then do what you can to let it burn bright so that you can create what drives your passion. Use this as another inspiration to push higher and farther than you thought you could go. Ignore the Nos and push for your YES. Break through the limitations and dream as big as you can and want. Use that flame and see what happens. The rest is up to no one else but you.

You are hard wired to change the world!

Guardian’s Three Little Pigs

The Guardian UK is an international newspaper that always seems to be at the cutting edge of news presentation, especially on their online site. Their mission for open journalism is becoming a model that many follow and even try to emulate. But this new advertisement that they made of the Three Little Pigs story shows exactly how their model works in real life. It’s a powerful depiction whereby news and society are deeply enmeshed once again, and collaborate to help uncover the true story.

This is what journalism means, and this is journalism for the 21st century. Not to mention that this is a brilliant advertisement that helps everyone understand our modern times. Once again, the Guardian UK has taken it up a notch, and we are all the recipients of the rewards. Hopefully this model of open journalism becomes the new norm, and brings respectability back to a once noble profession. Fortunately, there are many who believe in it, including my other home, the Urban Times.

We’re Not Going To Take It Anymore

I just saw this on My Modern Met and had to share because it is too hilarious not to. Pinar found these portraits of frustrated superheroes who simply have had enough of their thankless jobs. Of course, what can you expect from people who are always expected to play the dutiful hero while saving people, populations, and even planets with very little help. The fun starts with Roberto Salvador‘s selection of superheroes (which even includes the Japanese’s favorite space pirate, Captain Harlock, who also appears in that classic anime, Galaxy Express 999).

So how would we react if our superheroes one day decided to all throw a “hissy fit” at the same time and just let everything go to pot? If all the capes were put on hangers, and they just decided that today was the perfect day for a break? It resembles how so many of us feel in our lives, so it’s not far-fetched that these heroes would also want to jump off the emotional roller coaster for a day. In the meantime, go check out Roberto’s site and see how he deals with this cute scene.

And just imagine that you can hear their words, “We’ve had enough and we’re not going to take it anymore!!!!!

To Keep Going

All around us, people are running around with their heads cut off as they try to simply survive. But what if you want more than that? What if you can’t accept the phrase, “You should be grateful!” What if you know that there’s just got to be more to life than….THIS?

this isn’t happiness pointed to this meaningful public sign. It’s obvious that we’re everywhere. You know who I’m talking about. You might even be one of them. I know that I am. You identify with the constant curiosity, the chase, the joy at that momentary glimpse of wonder, and the need for more.

To keep going, just follow the sign(s). They’re everywhere and they’re leading you somewhere…incredible. Just keep an open mind and never give up on the magic!

This Is Why

We all know and love the movie Office Space. And most of us have been in Milton’s position at one time or another at work. Many still are. Some couldn’t take it any more and decided to follow their own path.

This is why.

– thanks Tony31280 for this hilarious reminder

The Movement of Henry

A really cute image of Archie and Jughead on this isn’t happiness led me to this mesmerizing artist, Henry The Worst. We’ve seen this type of movement before, but there is really something about how Henry incorporates the movement into his drawings in some incredibly captivating ways. Take this image of David Lynch with a distinct Twilight Zone feel to it.

If you’re looking for a new take on moving art, then go check out Henry’s site because he’s got some awesome images. I can’t stop smiling from all of the fun! He’s even got a Gatchaman Valentines Day card and a Milton card (you know Office Space and the red stapler). So much good stuff here! 😀

Scale Of The Universe Is Mind-blowing

I can’t believe that I forgot to forward this incredible site called Scale of the Universe 2 by Cary and Michael Huang. They seem to have done an incredible amount of “interactivities”, but this one has me in absolute awe. You always imagine what the world around might look like from another living beings perspective, and these two brilliant designers have given you the opportunity to find out through a virtual ride of our universe to see just how infinite the scale is.

It’s so simple that it’s genius. Click to surf down into the world of the microscopic, or use the scroll bar at the bottom to swiftly move from infinite to infinitesimal. It’s almost like being on a ride through time itself. I can only imagine how they came up with the concept of attacking the entire known universe into something as beautiful and educational as this. All I know is that the Scale of the Universe 2 is mind-blowing.

Excuse me while I go pick up my jaw…
