Heartstrings

It looks like I’m not the only one who believes that two souls connect through a string of some kind. I saw this adorable little video clip by Rhiannon Evans that she did back in 2009 for her graduation project at the University of Wales. No surprise that she’s won a ton of awards for this precious look at love! Find out the behind the scenes for this project at her original blog, MakingHeartstrings.

Thanks Vimeo for bringing this one out! And follow Rhiannon as she makes another story about her adorable knit couple in Knit’n’Purl. She really is a wonderful story teller.

Lillian Bassman (1917-2012)

This has already been quite a year for deaths, but I just found out that one of my favorite fashion photographers, Lillian Bassman, has passed on. I’m not an avid follower of fashion photography, though I am fascinated by the world that these photographers seek to create. Perfection has always been a superficial pursuit in this world, but it has rarely been captured with such power in simple black-and-white photos. What is amazing about Lillian is how she became disillusioned with this world, and not only stopped working in it, but also destroyed a lot of her own work. THAT takes a lot of courage.

It’s her later work that I am attracted to. Fortunately, someone found her tossed out treasure and convinced her to take a fresh look at them. Her new outlook changed how she presented these photos, and gave us the mysterious treasures that we’re all fascinated by. The world may continue to turn after each loss of talent and life, but we all feel the loss that each person contributed. Lillian really had a wonderfully abstract view of life that translated beautifully through her lens.

Shawn Wants Us To Have Happy Work

Shawn Anchor is the CEO of Good Think Inc., and his Ted Talk is absolutely hilarious and yet educational. His outlook is so great as he looks at the world with such a delightful perspective. Instead of making his hurt sister remember her injury, he told her that she was a baby unicorn. And this trend seems to have continued throughout his life until now, as he studies the psychology of happiness.

What he’s found (that we all already understand) is that our world is so fixated on the difficulties of life, that we view happiness as a luxury. He wants business, education, and the whole world to restructure how we pursue our lives and our days to concentrate on actions that will bring out the happiness that will make our successes follow with less pressure. I wonder how long it will take for the rest of the world to figure out what many of us already try to pursue as we work on having a full and creative life.

They’re Back – With A Ride

Yes, the Animation Workshop is back with another adorable Bachelor film project called Ride of Passage. Unlike the other men who hunt as a right of passage into manhood, Toki has gone on a different route. This route involves an unexpected friendship with a super-large chameleon who has taken a liking to this adventurous boy with a big heart. And it just goes to show you that the ride that takes the unexpected path just might be more fulfilling to you, even if it’s not what everyone expects. Life is short, go enjoy the ride that you crave!

Great job to this incredibly fun animation team from the Animation Workshop: Christian Bøving-Andersen, Casper Michelsen, Eva Lee Wallberg, Tina Lykke Thorn, Søren B. Nørbæk, Allan Lønskov, Jakob Kousholt, David F. Otzen. The future of film looks incredibly bright with the amazing talent that’s coming from here!!

Mr Happy Man

There’s a warm greeting waiting for you in Bermuda, and it will be given by the much-loved man known as Mr. Happy Man. Johnny Barnes spends quite a bit of time trying to make people’s day just a little bit brighter by sending out some brotherly love. If this beautiful loving man can do this on a daily basis to people he doesn’t know, then we can also spread out our feelings just like him. When you know that someone loves you, then your day is just that much better. Thanks goodness for Mr. Happy Man! You lucky Bermudans. : )

Let’s send a big thanks to Matt Morris Films for making this very sweet video, which has deservedly won some accolades.

From Me To You

She stood shyly by, waiting for him to appear. She just knew that if he didn’t walk by soon, then she would run out of cour…

Oh, there he is!” Fluffing her curls up, she looked down to make sure that everything looked perfect. This was her chance!

After soulfully gazing in his direction for what seemed like eons, she just had to find a way to tell him her feelings. Sure, she wasn’t a perfect little doll like a lot of the female specimens around her, but she had a heart as big as the wide open sky. Actually, she didn’t think all that much about looks, hers or his. Her thoughts focused on the feeling she got whenever that particular male specimen was in range of her notice.

Holding up the heart shaped box, she was ready to hand it to him when a beautiful girl ran up to him and gave him a hug. After seeing both of their smiles, she knew that this whole thing was useless. Putting the candy on the bench in front of some lockers, she quickly left through the vaulted doorway leading out into the open. She’d get over this….somehow.

As she sprawled on the lawn and gazed up into the blueness above, she could feel a tear trickle down her cheek. Frustrated, she swiped it away.

Oh, come on, you knew this was a long shot! Buck up, girl. There’ll be someone for you. He’s probably out there waiting to hear from you right now…

A shadow loomed overhead, cutting out the warm sunlight that made her feel a little better. As she looked up she saw…

Hey, did you leave this behind? I tried to come talk to you, but my cousin got in the way, and then you were gone. Was this for me?

The boy who made her heart beat faster was standing over her, looking down with a shy smile on his face and intent eyes. In his hands was the heart-shaped box of chocolates she’d been planning to give him. And on top was a simple note, “From Me to You”, that she wrote because she was scared of his reaction.

As he sat down beside her and opened the box, he grinned in delight, “Hey, these are my favorite!” Popping one in his mouth, he slid his hand over hers and admired their fit. But all she could do was stare in wonder.

Mile above, cupid was doing back strokes as he grinned at his new creation. Unlike those silly humans below, he wasn’t worried about superficial looks. No, his answer could be found much deeper. As two cords connected, a light emanated from the new couple, and it shone like a thousand bright red LEDs. Once lit up, two halves of a heart became one glowing symbol of love. THAT was what kept him going.

Happy Valentines Day, everyone!

Love A Creative

The one thing that inspires me is creativity in all of its forms. The world that I choose to follow is full of people who create in just about every medium imaginable. They are not part of the ready-made industry that moves with superficiality. They are the ones who prefer to create in the shadows, and just hope that maybe someday a beam of light will shine upon their creations. The shadows are full of these talented creatives who do what they do because of the definition of today’s holiday, Valentine’s Day: LOVE. So, instead of giving your support to someone well-known, how about giving it to someone who craves to be known? Not for the sake of popularity, but for the sake of investing in the soul of creativity. That soul needs to be continually nourished so that our world resonates with the purity of talent, and not the glitter of superficiality.

Here’s a suggestion to celebrate today: Love a creative. Just look around you, because they’re everywhere. Or better yet, love creativity by making something yourself. It’ll nourish your soul, and also spread to others in the gift that keeps on giving. Your heart is just full of love waiting to be shared.

Valentine

Here’s a sweet song with cute stop motion boards done by Kina Grannis called “Valentine” that she did back in 2010. Considering that today is the celebration of that most pink and red of days, I thought that we could just stop and take a moment to breath in the emotions that we sometimes take for granted: LOVE.

When it’s around, then we may not appreciate it. It’s only when it’s taken away that we yearn for it. And yet it’s something that is always inside of us just waiting to be called on. Love is pure. It’s our individual actions that defines our true intent for this most incredible of words. It is capable of power, and yet it’s also capable of understanding. The universality of this word is something that we all feel equally, therefore making it a potent foundation on which to build. Love really can make the world go round.

p.s. I’m sure that you’ll recognize Kina’s video, In Your Arms, that was full of candy wonder.

If you’re going to be in downtown LA on February 17th and 18th, then you might want to check out the collaborative performance of Lucent Dossier and Herakut. If you’ve been following this blog, then you know that I am a HUGE fan of Herakut. That they’ll be in my neck of the woods is sorely tempting me to adjust my schedule to go see this. I mean, how can you not be intrigued once you’ve seen this video and their artwork for this experience? Is it tempting you like it is me?

2012 Sony World Photography Awards

Once again, My Modern Met is showing us some amazing photography that was submitted for the 2012 Sony World Photography Awards. This competition is run by the World Photography Organization which is a group that supports the aspirations of avid photography lovers and practitioners from around the world. To say that these people see magic through their lenses would be an understatement once you’ve seen the winning photographs. If you missed this year’s competition, fear not because the 2013 competition opens on June 1, 2012.

The shortlist for the 2012 competition was just released, and the winners will be announced at the photo exhibition that will run from April 27 to May 20, 2012 at the Somerset House. If you’re in London, then you should definitely check out the hundreds of wonderful submissions. I found this awe-inspiring image from the Guardian UK. Amazingly enough, it’s from the student focus shortlist, so I can only imagine what the other categories will hold.
