Extraordinary Sarah

So, it’s been a while since I stumbled with StumbleUpon, and sure enough, I came across another great treasure that contains the sweetest drawings I’ve seen in a while. Amazingly enough, they’re simple pencil illustrations that give this charming children’s story a simple purity to match. The story is Extraordinary, and it’s by writer/artist Sarah Mensinga. Her style is really Pixaresque, which isn’t too surprising as she’s a concept artist and animator. She also has some roughs from her graphic novel, The Wellington Division, that looks pretty interesting as it’s got ninjas (?) in it. I’m definitely going to have to go check it out, as well as her other stories and blog. Go see if she doesn’t leave a smile on your face.

Be An Individual

I saw this video forwarded by @giselenmendez and @programmingmate (thanks again to Team Mendez), and wanted to share it because of a refreshing perspective that you don’t see in the mainstream too much. Why is that?

Damon Albarn of Gorillaz and Blur fame talks about being an individual when you create. I think that he’s absolutely right! Life is too short to be reworking the same model ad nauseum. There is too much amazement to be found in something that was created by your own hands. Not just because of the creation, but also because your mind will take you to places that you never imagined. But that only happens if you embrace your unique you. So, what are you waiting for? Take a blank canvas and make it your own. You know you want to!

Yan’s Colors

Going through Behance for my usual inspirational jolt, I came across the wonderfully nostalgic imagery of Yan Nascimbene. Something about his illustrations gives you a moment to smile when you see them. They make you feel calm. They enthrall you with their gorgeous details. They bring back the styles of yesteryear in a most wonderful way. Go check out his site to understand what I’m feeling when I see his warm drawings that really do draw you in. This is a master illustrator at his finest.

Hairy Leaf

Isn’t this the most lovely leaf that you’ve ever seen? The intricacies of nature…made from human hair. Jenine Shereos stitches together strands of human hair on a soluble background, and by knotting intersections together, they take the form of leaves once the backing has dissolved. She loves the meditative process because it allowed her to focus on the minute details of the veined network that mimics the natural patterns found all around us. It’s hard to wrap your mind around the fact that this is one part of nature turning into another through the hands of one very talented and thoughtful woman. Breathtakingly beautiful.

No Robots (or I’m Misunderstood)

This sweet little student film, directed by YungHan Chang and Kimberly Knoll, is entitled “No Robots”, and is a tale of those who are misunderstood. What we think we know about someone or something isn’t always the whole story, as there will usually be an unexpected twist presented by the individual. A cautionary tale that warns us that everyone has something that is precious to them. The most inhumane can hold humanity in the most unexpected of ways. I’d like to think that’s how life works. Wouldn’t you?

Elniño Delaspinturas

I stumbled onto a collection of Elniño Delaspinturas works at Street Art Utopia that has to be seen to be believed. This is just one of the images there that was taken from the streets of Granada, and he’s done quite a lot. Wow, this town must be so beautiful to walk around! Click on this link to read some musings in English, as it’s full of fascinating stories about his work and life.

According to what I read, his favorite subjects are children, but his style is full of dreamy imagery and colors on every subject. This one above definitely fits in with a gorgeous dream state. Take a look at the entire collection showing at Street Art Utopia, and just sigh in happiness to be able to share in this dreamy display of inspiration.

Head On

I think that I already mentioned that I am in love with Reddit. I keep stumbling on mind-blowing finds and the most hilarious or thought-provoking comment streams that I’ve read in a long time. The Redditers definitely are a unique bunch of people that make the moments when you visit full of fun, lessons, and amazement.

I clicked on this image as the title was about art and taxidermy, which frankly just begged to be clicked on. Wow, am I glad that I did because what I saw was this incredible art display created by Cai Guo-Qiang, a Chinese artist who dabbles in a range of artistic mediums. This piece is called Head On and was part of his 2006 exhibition depicting the bravery and determination of these wolves who want to overcome the glass wall.

Check out his blog to see what he’s up to now. It’s full of some incredible work from a man with an amazing mind. WOW!

Thought For The Day – What You See

It seems like a good time for another thought for the day, and this quote in my tweet stream says it all. Did we look? What do we see when we look at anything? Do we see the physical, or do we delve deeper and see the hidden messages that are trying to not only be seen but heard as well? Take a close look at that person sitting near you. Did you notice anything beyond the surface? Like maybe the clothes look new, but the style’s just a little old. Or maybe that slight droop in their shoulders as though they’re having a tough time. Or maybe that person looks shabby because they’ve put everything they have into a dream that they really want to come true.

You see emotions of every kind on every person. Sometimes they’re true, but sometimes they might be hiding something much deeper. So, do something sincere when that person’s eyes meets yours. Smile. Say hello. Tell them to have a great day. Ask them how they are. It’s the simple things that we hold dear, because it comes from the heart. It’s the least complicated thing that we’re capable of doing, and that means the most to a lot of people who don’t expect it. No pressure. Just love. Because everyone’s got something to be loved, whether it’s a talent, a personality, or just because…

An Incredible Image of the Hajj

This incredible image was created by Saudi artist, Ahmed Maters, and is named Magnetism. When you first look at it, it’s hard to imagine what it could be. It seems organic or even magnetic. It’s both. This was created using iron and magnets to depict the thousands of pilgrims around the Ka’bah at the Hajj, the pilgrimage of a lifetime to Mecca that all Muslims will take. Read more about it in this Guardian UK article that explores in depth what is involved at this most sacred of events.

We humans all have something that we hold sacred in our hearts and souls. Sometimes, they happen on a most special day. And sometimes, they happen everyday. But the feelings that come from embracing what you hold to be sacred will be sent out a thousandfold to create the most amazing circumstances. Just like this journey.
