A Site About Book Shelves

If you’re a fan of those paper treasures made up of loose pages between two hard board clothed covers, or perhaps paperbacks, then you’re going to love this site:

It’s called Bookshelf Porn and it really is just as it’s name describes: Juicy pictures of books shelves in all shapes and sizes full of sexy books. Can’t you just smell the musty smell of collector’s versions of some first edition that everyone would just drool over? With names that you know well, and others that will tantalize your senses with their unfamiliarity. The awesome thing about bookshelves is that no two are alike, just like their caretakers. You might think that I mean owners, but books notoriously move from library to library on their own personal journeys that are as interesting as their own content. We hold them for a finite period of time, and many times it less than the actual life of that book.

Good Finder finds yet another blog that will have book lovers everywhere scream like giddy school girls seeing their idols up close and personal. Only in this case, the idols are quite linear, mysterious, sometimes messy, but always treasured. Ok, maybe it does sound like some idols out there…

Oh wow, did you see those stacks???

Touch

As living beings, we all know the importance of touch. It’s an act that signifies a personal connection, and we like to incorporate it into our daily activities. I’ve always been fascinated by letterpress, as it give creative works a 3D feel because the depressed lines highlight the design that they surround. No matter how futuristic we become, we will always crave to feel something because it allows us to connect at a more intimate level, therefore making it our own for just a few moments during that contact.

If you look around at the design world, you’ll see the resurgence (or did it ever really go away – I think not) of letterpress in business cards, posters, and every other give away that will land in someone else’s hands. Color impacts design by drawing in the eye. Depth that letterpress brings draws in the hand. Together, they engage our brain as we enter an experience where multiple senses connect on a whole different level. There’s a lot out there to explore if you’re learning about letter press, so go out there and explore. You’ll find some amazing work that will make you want to touch them.

Here’s a short documentary on Letterpress (the narrator’s delivery is a bit much, but the story is great):

Are you going to introduce some depth into your line work today? Who knows who you’ll touch when you do.

Is Your Fruit Looking At You?

Have you ever wondered if your fruit is looking at you? You take them out of your fridge, and run them through the wash to prepare for a juicy treat. But that water droplet that is rolling down the fruit’s side – could it possibly be a sweat drop? And what’s with the sudden cuing of the track from Nightmare on Elm Street? Maybe they know what’s in store for them, and are hoping that you’re going to wake up. Or that they’ll wake up from this nightmare of seeing that knife coming at them. Oh so slowly… If you’re not paying attention, does that mean that you’re not hearing your fruit scream?

Behance is the bringer of these blinking fruits by Alexander Zapadenko, who can really make you think twice about that pear that you’re admiring on the cutting board. Ummm, seriously, isn’t that a look of terror that I’m seeing in my afternoon snack??

Thanks, Alexander, for this cute treat!

Double Helix In Singapore

There is some amazing design going into architecture these days. The days of simply using stone and mortar are now being replaced by whimsy and delight because of the freedom of new architectural designs. My Modern Met talks about the Helix bridge in Singapore, a collaboration between Cox Architecture and Architect 61, which is the winning concept that is now under construction over the Singapore River and on its way to becoming a reality. What started out as a clean curvature of space by Cox Architecture morphed into a statement of wonder that combines a double-helix, with glowing LED lights, and ever-changing views as the glass and steel structure seems to revolve over the pedestrian walkway. This should be something to see when it’s done, as well as a statement of continuing transformation for a dynamic country.

Blackout against SOPA and PIPA

We’re all standing with Reddit against SOPA and PIPA and for P.R.O. T.E.C.H. J.O.B.S.:

There are times when certain causes have to be supported, and this is one of those times. We are seeing our rights being decimated at an astonishing rate with the current Congress, and this time (well, there are many other times) they are taking over powers that they were never given. Their organization, ICE, is responsible for over 84,000 mistaken takedowns AND deporting a missing teen (American citizen) to Columbia. Is this who we want to control the Internet? Or worse, the people with money who can use these legislations to their monetary benefits and our dissolution?

The Internet is vital to the prosperity of mankind, so much so that the United Nations declared it to be a human right. We have already accomplished some wondrous things and helped even the playing field for people who have used it towards their future and ours. The world protects this one thing more than anything because it helps bind us together by highlighting our similarities and not our differences.

If you are against SOPA and PIPA, then you are not agreeing with piracy. This isn’t the issue. When money overruns our conversation, then we lose sight of the truly important things in life. Things like freedom, interconnection, hope, capability, innovation, and so much more. We are people first. That’s what this fight is about. And that’s what Congress continues to ignore. This isn’t about them. It’s about our collective future that they’re trying to put behind bars for the sake of $$. That’s just wrong on every level! Here’s an infographic that show just how wrong they all are: Why the movie industry is wrong about SOPA (and PIPA).

p.s. At least we’re being heard. Some good news forwarded by Demand Progress: PIPA not ready by 6 US Senators and SOPA being stalled (for now, but they’re still working on it)

Before The Blackout

Just a short note that this site, though it’s still fairly new and unknown, is planning on blacking out tomorrow with others on the Net in protest of Internet censorship in any form.

Yes, we do have serious problems with illegal financial activities, but the Net continues to show that it actually can do a decent job of policing one another when needed in moral circumstances. Unlike the legal hand-slapping in our business, financial, and government sectors. Many of us feel that copyright, patents, and other legal protections are no longer capable of doing the job that they were intended to do, as these acts were created for the previous century. In activities involving the creation of original works in this 21st century, it isn’t going to only be about ownership and what’s due to us. We’ve done that one to death, and need to understand how far activities such as responsible collaboration and fair use can take us in our innovative world. That’s why the likes of Creative Commons was founded. People are fighting for freedoms that are being taken away by our governments, who shouldn’t have this kind of power. Legislation shouldn’t enter into the public domain, as it is not their grounds – it’s all of ours.

So, I hope you understand why I’m joining this blackout. Enjoy your time, and see you on the flip side when I continue to share inspirations that make my own creativity flow.

Future Belongs To The Curious

There are a lot of companies out there that want to make a difference. I just came across this video made by Skillshare, and it’s words are some of the most powerful motivations that I’ve heard in a while. Of course, I’m partial to their thought pattern since I’m enormously curious about everything. Take a moment to hear their call, as they’re looking for some people to help them on their mission. Here’s part of their vision:

We exist to destroy and disrupt this dusty, broken system that only allows money to buy your place in the world. Education should be meaningful, collaborative, and accessible to all.

We’re world builders. Skillshare is for the doers, not the academics or theorists. We empower people to do or become anything they desire. We deliver passion through our work, employees, and community. In other words, we’re here to increase the global passionate index.

Looking at their site, they seem to have a powerful way to grow education, because it involves us all. If you want to become a teacher, or you want to learn, then go check out their site. It’s a wonderful concept!

And remember, like their video says, “The future belongs to the curious.

Where Did The Night Go

This is a powerful video that relies on the voice of Gil Scott-Heron to carry the modernistic geometric beats that play in time with the words of “Where Did The Night Go”. It was done by Steffan K in tribute to this amazing talent who unfortunately left this world in 2011.

Girl Walk // All Day

This has seriously got to be the most fun I’ve had watching a video in a while. Girl Walk // All Day describes itself as “a feature-length dance music video and tale of urban exploration that follow three dancers across New York City”. The video above is the last installment of a project that started out as a Kickstarter campaign that took the music video concept and expanded it, with the help of mash up musician Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis). The story revolves around a young dancer who quits her job after continued disillusionment, and sets out to experience life as she wants to. I know that most of us can relate to this story, can’t we? Their 12-chapter story can be seen on their Vimeo page, so find a comfortable seat and prepare to be delighted.

And if you want to read more about their background, check out this piece or this piece from NY Times.

Well, I’m off to watch from the beginning (sorry I put the finale up, but it’s too hard to resist)… : ) The music and the dancing are just wickedly infectious!!!!

A Belated Present

So, 2012 has already started and I’m a little late with my present to you all. As a writer, I usually keep a notebook or some type of note taking device that allows me to track my thoughts. Considering that they can creep up on you without any notice, it’s handy to have something that will track your creative thoughts.

I’ve heard a lot of people say that they’re not creative, and that simply isn’t true. If you have thoughts, then you can be creative – so that means that anyone can do this. But sometimes creativity is tough to start up, so I created this little PDF journal for you to print out to keep your notes handy. It’s not much, but it’s my gift to you. I hope that it helps you create a colorful idea storm in 2012. You can even use it as a manifesto to start something new and different. This is going to be a year to remember – I can just feel it!

Here’s my present that I created for you: Dream 2012 journal – a present (printable PDF – 7 mb)
