Space X has become the first private company to launch their vehicle for docking with the International Space Station. The Falcon 9 rocket will be carrying the Dragon spacecraft on a test mission to verify the way private companies will be working with NASA in the future. It took off successfully at 12:44am PST on May 22, 2012 and will take four days of travel and testing before it attempts to dock with the ISS. In total, the mission is estimated to take 2 weeks. Read more about the mission in the Falcon 9/Dragon mission press release.
This is an exciting time for private space travel. We’ve finally reached the time when space travel will be accessible to more than the chosen few. We are entering an era when our most fervent dreams can be produced by our own two hands. Actually, it’s always been the case, but now we have proof that anyone can reach up and touch the stars. Pretty amazing thought, isn’t it?
Bravo Space X for this major milestone: You’re in outer space. May all of your dreams always be in reach. You’ve shown what can be accomplished when passion and dedication power the wind blowing you onward and upward! Mankind has taken another step upward.
