It’s not often that a font set will impact your heart almost immediately. I saw the first letter A and wanted to cry for the people of Thailand. Those of us who don’t live near water don’t understand the impact of floods. What’s more difficult to understand is that we probably had a hand at causing the increased frequency of floods on the coastal regions. There’s no continent that isn’t affected, though the inner communities will be spared the pains for now. But for how long is anyone’s guess as we keep ignoring our effect on nature. This is a case of an equal and opposite reaction. We put pollutants into nature and nature reacts in ways to expel them. I wonder how long it will be before we actually really get what we’re doing? We only have one planet, and we should be taking much better care of it.
In the meantime, the BBDO Bangkok’s FFF Project wants to help so they’ve created fonts with a cause. Download the fonts, donate to the Thai Red Cross Society, and help a people make it through a natural disaster like no other they’ve ever experienced.
Opusbou made a film short name “El Empleo” ( winner of 102 International Awards) that seriously makes you think twice about what you’re doing with your life. If you choose the normal path, that path of least resistance, there will always be someone above you who will turn you into an accessory. So, maybe, it’s time to choose the other path that few dare to embark upon? This film might be short, but it’s message is long-lasting. Note: Watch the end credits to see that change happens one person at a time…
After the week we just went through (I’m in denial about the future), I figure that we all need a little bit of humor in our lives. Seems like everyone’s in a mood these days that has little to do with winter gloom. So without future ado, please watch “The Artists” by Giant Creative with a perfect description: “Two rival painters who fail to see the big picture.” It seemed appropriate for what we’ve been going through. I can see why it’s a favorite on Vimeo. The painters are adorably clueless.
I really love a good piece of street art, and Argentinian artist Eduardo Relero is making some insanely beautiful 3D street art that is turning a lot of heads, hearts, and more. This one is called “corazón sabio”, and I really like who is bidding for this girl’s heart. Yay, one more creative on her way out to share her talent with us! Go take a look at Eduardo’s blog to see more of his mind-stopping surrealism which can be seen all around the world. Not only do we love looking at them, but we also like to interact with them. Wow! AMAZING! – found through My Modern Met
C215, a street artist who’s really Christian Guemy (I wrote about him before), has a show that opened last week at the Shooting Gallery and will continue through January 7, 2012. You can see his gorgeous pieces for “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” at their site. Christian is another artist who believes that the work that he does allows us to view our urban space as bursts of conversation and thought through each street art that shows up. It’s a silent conversation that is meant to open up our minds so that we think a little more deeply about our world and how we live in it. The video interview for savoirchanger.org is in French, but it does have English subtitles below, and should be watched because he has some great thoughts to share. The most important being that he is part of the artist group who seek to beautify the world and put some humanity back into the conversation.
It’s time for the mainstream to realize that artists have an immense depth to contribute to the dialogue of life, and may be a key to giving us back our humanity. My first post of the day shows that we really need it back as soon as possible, before others destroy the world for us all. Just a thought…
José Parlá paints from his heart on the walls of the streets and canvas, and it’s coming through in his works for the Concord City Place that was endowed to the City of Toronto. But the interview above is a fascinating look into the mind of an artist who uses his medium to tell a story. These painting comprise stories told in his own calligraphic style, using his own experiences to create depth and meaning to what started out as a simple thought and then came to life. To know that he takes his roots and his passion seriously, read an excerpt from his artist statement: “I wanted to create works that retained their roots. My new paintings could not abandon their environment. I then embarked on a journey to search out in detail the dialogue of decaying walls, the marks on them, and what it all meant to me. This would lead the paintings to become memory documents.” Those are some powerful words that anyone who’s interested in creativity will understand. – found through Arrested Motion post
We’ve all been screaming at the top of our lungs to stop Congress, in particular the House Judiciary Committee. We thought that we got a reprieve, but Rep. Lamar Smith is hell bent on killing the Internet because he’s being told that this is the best way to stop piracy. It’s coming back for the kill on December 21st – and we need to keep pushing back.
If you listened to the HJC marathon session on December 15th, then you were probably also disheartened as the entire world watched the majority in this committee blow through and reject amendments that would have protected the Internet, even when expert opinion was being thrown at them. All they could say was, “Where were all of these people when we were asking about answers to piracy for years? Why are they just now showing up?” Of course, that just means that they haven’t been paying attention to the international cryout that stood alongside the experts who’ve been warning of disaster for many, many years. Even if they admit that they don’t understand all this “Internet stuff” that nerds are throwing at them, they claim to know what’s best for us. And “We have to stop these pirates from stealing from us!!!” means that the opponents approve of theft. Ah, if only the world were really so black and white. Only a politician could use this ironic language as they happily accept the money that special interests are lavishing on them.
Unfortunately, they only know what’s best for MONEY. Our human rights and freedom are all being shackled by stupid dollar signs. Watch Leah Kauffman‘s video “Firewall (Don’t Let Our Government Ruin the Internet)”, forwarded by Demand Progress, and then pass it around to everyone. Heck, send it to Congress. Oh, but be careful, because they’ll probably sick ICE on you with a takedown notice. Never has a time in our history called for a V for Vendetta moment as this decade has. STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS! All together, we can’t be ignored. This is make or break for democracy. SOPA is the Great American Firewall.

As an American, I simultaneously apologize to the world for our ignorance and cringe at what we’ve become. Some days, the idiocy and apathy are really hard to absorb.
When I found out that the Time’s Person of the Year for 2011 was the protester, I was ecstatic. No, I am not an anarchist, though I’m far from pleased with the way society runs right now. But, when Time listened to the people and choose the people’s champion, it gives us all a cause to reflect. Just maybe, there is some hope for change. God knows that we need it with all that’s happening. This has been a horrific week in the US, though it hasn’t been much better in other parts of the world. But we are all reaching out to one another in hope that strength grows with numbers. Universal thought is no longer as superficial as it once was. A large number are awakening and demanding that change happens.
When a small town in China can stand up to their oppressive leaders, then you know that times are changing. When people protest during a democratic vote in Russia and force the leaders to explain themselves, you know that something wonderful is occurring. When the whole world stands up and shouts, then you know that thing’s might just be turning around. Is 2011 the beginnings of our rebirth?

Have you ever seen a shade of blue that was this emotional? The supernatural quality of John Colbensen‘s photography leads us into another world made up of breathtaking beauty. My Modern Met once again found a master of imagery at a level that supercedes the visual and leads us to the spiritual.
You can feel the emotions that are tied into a specific area or time. The one above beckons to you as though you are standing at the edge of the physical, and waiting to dive into the wildness of the farthest reaches of space. That John comes from the wild beauty of Norway can be clearly seen in how he views his beloved nature. He says that passion is time-consuming. His passion consumes us all. Whatever you do, go through his entire gallery and leave him a note of thanks for his incredible gift. All I can do is stare in wonder at each image. The details, the colors, the feelings – divine.
I am so in love with these Looney Tunes shadow boxes by David Kracov. He’s already well known in the animation world, and now he’s taken our love for these lovable looney characters and married them to some classic sayings. The one above pretty much describes how I’ve been feeling about lots of topics lately, so it was a natural choice to show here. ; ) Got take a look at other sayings and pick which one you can relate to on My Modern Met or at David’s site. I also love his Einstein’s thinking outside of the box as well. So adorable, David!
Our censorship fight with the US Congress is far from over, as they continue to attempt to break the Internet with legislations driven by crony capitalism in the US and abroad. Though SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) have been pulled back for now, more continue to follow them. Now, we have to contend with ACTA(more) and TPP(2), which are international attempts to censor and control the Internet for the sake of commerce. And if that's not enough, now there's CISPA (more).
Go to EFF.org to keep up with the legal news that impacts our world and its technology. The greed won't stop, so we have to stay vigilant as well. Especially now that lobbyists are admitting out loud that they expect to be rewarded for their "contributions": Read it on TorrentFreak
