B & W Simplicity

If you want to capture atmosphere in an image, I’ve always loved the B & W approach that captures the simplicity of the image because it’s constructed of its most basic parts. German photographer Kai Ziehl has captured some powerful emotions in all of his images, though there is something about this image that draws me. The combination of a strong architectural structure that shelters the walker from the elements speaks to a myriad of feelings including loneliness, tranquility, strength, permanence, and a cleansing of an artificial world by nature.

Check out his site because he has an enormous collection of imagery that attest to an artist’s eye that is able to capture the rhythms that we humans build into our world, which have a beauty all their own. Glad that My Modern Met featured Kai, because he deserves it!

Jay Smooth Talks Race At Ted

I didn’t get a chance to see this Ted Talk by Jay Smooth (ill doctrine) until now, and boy, should I have seen this earlier. I hadn’t realized that he’s also someone who’s encountered the “What are you?” question that I and so many other multiracials have to answer. Bad on me for not following him closer, as he totally deserves to be heard because of his special ability to converse into clarity. His calm explanation that as imperfect human beings, we sometimes build obstacles that disable simple straightforward conversations about race. This talk helps to diffuse a touchy subject that so many of us don’t want to have, but must because of that intensely painful question, “What are you?”:

  • Social construct of race is illogical.
  • Unconscious mechanisms push towards one extreme or another

These are just a small portion of personal efforts that we all need to accomplish in order to move past the talk that divides. The rest shows up in our social institutions that are designed to keep the barriers intact, for whatever reason. No matter how much we act as good people with our own conversations, it won’t matter if we don’t change our social structure so that there is no opportunity for divisiveness to keep cropping into those conversations. Yes, we’ve come a long way, baby. But man, do we still have a ways to go towards “perfection”.

Politician Under Surveillance

luzinterruptus wants politicians to know how it feels to be under surveillance. Honestly, I couldn’t find a better display that depicts what normal people everywhere are enduring in many countries, democratic or not. We live in an age where surveillance has become the norm, because those who have the power seem to want it that way. Never mind that overreactions lead to horrible actions that take away people’s sense of security, no matter how much those protectors tell us otherwise.

Here’s their interpretation of why this display is necessary: “We took to the streets of Madrid, on the 19th of November, a day of reflection before the general elections, in order to present a simulation of the surveillance of politicians, with the aim of generating debate or simply a thought among the people who strolled through the streets on their way back home.

I know that the conversation on the streets was probably pretty open, but did the politicians get it? Because, frankly, they’re the ones who got us in this mess in the first place!

Kevin Tong’s Posters

OK, my jaw hit the floor when I saw the posters by Kevin Tong on Inside The Rock Poster. I’ll talk about them in another post because they deserve their own special coverage.

I was actually drawn in by another poster that he did for Chuck Palahniuk, which was stupendously gorgeous in its own right. But then I went to Kevin’s site and stumbled onto this beauty that he did for an Okkervil River show at the Wiltern. The colors drew me first because of the warmth with such a haunting image.

Kevin’s other works are just as intricate and gorgeous, and cover the gamut of entertainment in music, movies, books, travel, and pretty much everything under the sun. Each one needs to be stared at to appreciate them down to their minute details. Seriously, you have to check out his blog to see everything that he’s created. It really is that amazing to behold. Wow…

Aleksei’s Steampunk

It seems like a day to revisit a few of my favorite artists, so I checked out Aleksei Bitskoff’s blog to see what he’s been up to. This Steampunk Budda was done back in June, but it really caught my eye since I am such a huge fan of anything steampunk.

Behance also has some more from one of his latest creations, Room in Between, which is part of the Illvillehotel project that is curated by Am I Collective. There are still rooms available in this hotel, so stop by and see if you can become one of its occupants.

Dominic’s Back With More Moments In Time

I covered Dominic Wilcox a while back when he showed his initial watch sculptures, Moments in Time. Well, it looks like Dominic’s back with more moments in time that speak to significant moments in 2011. They portray feelings of fragmentation as time itself sometimes seems, usually because of our own actions. This new series includes: 1) Love and Protest 2) UC Davis Protest, 3) Captured, 4) The Beautiful Game, and 5) Comfortably Oblivious.

These creations are as amazing as ever, even if they show a sometimes uncomfortable side to our society and to human nature. He really does have an amazing creativity, doesn’t he? I can’t wait to see what he’ll do next!

In Love With Robert Valley’s Lines

There isn’t much to say, except that I’m am so in love with Robert Valley‘s lines. I’ve followed his work for a while, but didn’t check out his blog until I saw a tweet by @kevindart (who I also follow) that led me to it. Now, I simply can’t stop going through it. Too bad that it’s so new that there isn’t enough to view yet, although his art has fortunately been around for a whole lot longer. More of it can be seen at Maverick Studio (which is now unfortunately disbanded) and his old blog. Just look at the page below – isn’t it sublime?

Thought For The Day – Reality

Thought for the day – I saw this PSA on this isn’t happiness, taken at North 10 in NY, and thought that it’s the perfect line describing reality. Our normalcy is something that’s hard to swallow anymore, and this shows that a lot of us also can’t stomach it anymore. Argue all you want about protesters being unpatriotic, or that we should just shut up and take it, or even pull ourselves up by our bootstraps… but how is patriotism good when it’s just shoveling the crap downhill where most of us are trapped? Being comfortable doesn’t last forever, and life can change on a dime. What are you going to do when that happens?

ASM (A State Of Mind)

http://youtu.be/LIWYtOI55Ao

I found this video on Arrested Motion and really love everything about it. ASM (A State of Mind) has a new video featuring French street artist Liliwenn, the founder of Crimes of Minds, and it portrays the life of a street artist on the run from the long arm of the law. It’s an awesome game of cat and mouse, as she works on a piece with help from the guys who deliver her necessary tools while evading a very persistent policeman. The plot is awesome, but the the catchy tune really makes you want to smile. Great job, all!

Go to Liliwenn’s Flickr page to get a good eyeful of the amazing finished tribute to ASM (A State of Mind). Here’s my fav version: (click here). Don’t forget to check out the rest of her stuff. Stellar work that blows your mind with its realism!

Corruption Wall

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a more appropriate piece of street art that truly depicts the corruption that is Wall Street. Liqen creates such an impactful image of people so trapped in their dystopia that they hardly recognize the signs of insidious imprisonment in which they dwell. It’s even appropriately titled “Wall Street Labyrinth”, though it actually resides on the Wynnwood Walls in sunny Miami. Liqen simply drew what he felt, and boy did he nail how so many of us feel.

On another awesome note, it seems that this is Liqen’s first piece in the United States, but hopefully he’ll do many more. Most of his work can be seen in various parts of Mexico. He continues to create masterful imagery that speaks against what humanity has become due to industrialization, using the insect world that he admires as the archetypes for human devolution.
