Luis Von Ahn ReCaptchas

Watch this incredible Ted Talk by Luis Von Ahn, who has an amazing idea to translate the web through massive online collaboration. Luis is one (Manuel Blum, Nicholas J Hopper, and John Langford is the rest of the team) of the inventors of the CAPTCHA test that we all recognize when we sign onto a site to post a comment, or do any other action that needs authentication that an actual human being is completing this act. Since computers are becoming more proficient every day, we are now using them in ways to help us monetize our activities without always sparing a thought to its morality. Hence, the need for CAPTCHA in all of its frustrating nuances.

Well, Luis is now working on another idea where the whole world can help, and it’s called Duolingo. It’ll allow the user to learn a language for free while also helping to translate actual sentences that need to be translated. So, we can now learn a language while providing a service for free, but also not having to pay astronomical fees just to obtain some sort of language class or program. Seems like a fair trade. One that is also taking us towards a new business model that seems much more democratic than the one we now use.

If you’re interested, Duolingo is currently in beta, so you can sign on early to become one of the testers who can also learn a language by translating a sentence. I just signed up. How about you? Go to www.duolingo.com to do so. It’ll be a blast, I’m sure! Absolutely genius!!!

A Beautiful Vision

I love watching an artist at work, and My Modern Met led me to another amazing artist who created a beautiful vision entitled “Circulation”. Minjae Lee is a South Korean artist who uses vibrant colors that stagger the mind with their brilliance. If I hadn’t seen the making of video above, I wouldn’t have believed that this is accomplished with a free hand and a wide open mind. This is some serious dedication to art, and it’s a pleasure to have experienced just a little of his love for his passion. Beautiful!

Find out more about Minjae Lee from Artflow Magazine’s interview here.

Talking Emoji

I was going through my tweets when I came across a link that was tweeted by @AnandWrites and @jennydeluxe which led to Intro to Narratives in Emoji 101.

What I ran into were short stories written in Emoji. It takes a bit to adjust your eyes, but the story pops right out and fills your head with the actual image of what the writer is trying to convey very clearly. Take this story about Christmas shopping –

Boy, do i relate to this story (as do we all)! You have to chuckle at the creativity that we all have in using just about anything at our disposal to build something new. Language comes in all forms, and some people won’t recognize such an amazing creation because they can’t get past the surface of that new language form. But this is how our language, all language started…with images. That they became written words specific to a region only shows the ingenuity in creating things that bind us together in familiarity. And now we’ve just taken a step back and embraced our past in a really cute and endearing way. The language of Emoji is all about emotions, and it seems to easily inspire that emotion because of the images that we relate to through our feelings.

Jason Pearson Is Loved

From the Comic Archive (2011):

Today (well, most days) is one of those days that I wish I were rich. There’s so much in this world that needs fixing. So much that is unfair. When I just checked back into Twitter, I saw a tweet that had me wondering about what was going on with Jason Pearson, who is another comic artist that I LOVE! Just a few clicks through and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. How can a man as talented as Jason possibly be pushed aside by the big studios until he’s suffering?! I haven’t followed him as long as most of his fans, but I fell in love with his creation Body Bags and again through Dead Pool, The Ride, and so many more titles. You can see his skewed sense of humor in his work, and that’s what drew me to him. Whenever I see his name, I click to see what’s going on. I would love to meet him in person to tell him that he has one more fan who thinks that he’s AMAZING. It’s so sad that someone of his caliber is feeling the pummeling that we’re all going through. This shouldn’t be happening! I’m so glad that the comic industry and fans are as close as they are, because they managed to get to him in time.

Best wishes, Jason. You will return stronger than ever. I don’t know you personally, but I am a huge fan! And I feel your pain.

More SOPA Info

Updated: The new alternative that was created and supported by both Senators Wyden and Issa is now being covered by EFF. Here’s the link to their initial take on the OPEN act: click here. Be sure to download it, read it, and make your comments. They want to hear from us all.

And updated again: The original link to the graphic in this post has been removed at the request of Business Insurance Blog (who I want to ensure gets the credit for this in-depth and necessary graphic) so that any readers who use the link won’t get a 404 return. Here’s a prime example of an awesome provider who wants their readers to be satisfied. If you’re in the business of any kind of service (which is every business), then here’s a prime example of caring for your customer. We need more people and businesses to think and act like the Business Insurance Blog!

I’ve been talking quite a bit about the draconian Internet legislation that the US Congress is trying to turn into law, SOPA and Protect IP. You can read my previous posts, or you can take a look at this infographic created by Business Insurance Blog (update: link deleted per request). It’ll give you the entire gist of the battle that’s been waging for awhile, and it’s getting critical as SOPA will be set for a vote this month while Protect IP is being temporarily halted by Senator Wyden with the help of americancensorship.org.

And if you think that there isn’t much to be worried about as we’re still a democratic country (?), well, take a closer look at another bill that did pass: National Defense Authority Act. I’ll bet you’re feeling something now, aren’t you? Hopefully, President Obama will do the right thing and veto this one, as well as SOPA and Protect IP (in case they get that far).

See more SOPA info through the infographic below (Thanks Mashable and Big Business Blog):

Mateusz’s Yakuza

I found another amazing illustrator by the name of Mateusz Kolek, who lives and works in Cracow, Poland. He’s definitely popular if you seen the amount of people who are linking to his various works, and it’s easy to see why from his print, Yakuza, shown above. His use of color is understated and yet so powerful, while his characterization is playful. A pretty wonderful combination. Follow him on his site or his Behance page.

– thanks for this find, where the drifts get deeper (Chris). You’ve got a pretty wonderful Tumblr page yourself!

Calvin And Hobbes Grows Up

Everyone wants to grow up to be a secret agent, right? It looks like that’s what Calvin and Hobbes want to be. Kizer180 makes their dreams come true in this image that puts the cool into grown up Calvin and Hobbes. Pretty different from the playful images that we’re used to, huh? I love how laid back Hobbes still is though he’s now an adult. Great imagination there, Kizer180! Keep on creating and we’ll keep cheering.

– found through a GoodFinder post

p.s. check out the rest of his gallery, as well as his blog, because he’s got some sweet art!

Poets Withdraw

Do you recognize these two people? If you love poetry, then you’ll recognize them as Alice Oswald and John Kinsella. They are, or were, two of the finalists for the TS Eliot prize, but now they are no longer in the running…at their own choice.

Alice pulled out of the running in protest to the event’s sponsor, Aurum Funds, which is an investment management company. Within one day, John also withdrew while thanking Alice for enlightening him about the sponsorship. We’re going through tough times, and to turn down money seems crazy to many people. And yet, sometimes, money just isn’t enough to go against your principles and beliefs.

Spice Of Life

We all know and love Van Gogh’s Starry Night. We’ve seen so many variations of it, all of them inspiring. But we haven’t seen one made up from spices that we use. Kelly McCollam is a photographer that uses the spice of life to create tributes to masterpieces in her series of the same name. What blows my mind are the shaded nuances exhibited as she manipulates each grain to get the right effect. It a masterpiece in its own right, along with being a tribute to something that we sometimes take for granted (the spices, that is). The art even takes on the appearance of a Zen garden. Kelly really does understand the Spice of Life.

– thanks again, My Modern Met

And Then I Fell Back In Love With An Ad

After a day of being disgusted with ads, I fell back in love with them because of an ad campaign that was done by Team Detroit for the College for Creative Studies. It’s a tongue-in-cheek approach to pursuing a degree in art, done as a PSA. Check out the entire line of ads that can currently be seen around Detroit, though I found them on My Modern Met and Breaking Copy. Bravo, Team Detroit, for a hilarious yet thought-provoking way to get us to see the real message.

Don’t just know the warning signs of art. Embrace them and use them to create and inspire. It really is becoming a necessity in today’s world! Excuse me while I go create…
