We Feel Fine

This is a pretty beautiful site, We Feel Fine. org, with the emphasis on the beauty in the feeling. Feeling whatever we’re writing about, that is. This is a site that’s been around since 2006, collecting blog content that contains the word “feel” in it. It depicts the blog extraction as a floating shapes of feeling which shows the person’s location, weather, and emotion while hovering, and their actual words when the shape is clicked.

This amazing search engine and artistic endeavor was created by Sepandar D. Kamvar (Stanford University) and Jonathan Harris (Number 27.org) as a timely depiction of the world mood as shown through the blog world. Here’s their paper, which they presented at WSDM 2011, that describes the intent of this project. It’s amazing to see that data can be portrayed in such a beautifully impactful way that shows the volume and the emotions of its research simultaneously. It’s this type of data research that can be truly useful, because it can start to understand the true importance of human emotion in our everyday lives.

A World That Thrives

There is a world that thrives on creation and inspiration. It’s not in one place, unless you count that the place starts from within us all.

This video was created for OFFF 2011, which is a “post-digital cultural festival” where people with a singular interest in art gather to share and experience. There are speakers who present and teach about some amazing creations, so that others can feel them and then go off on their own from their inspiration.

But to me the video stands up on its own because of its passionate embrace of our creative actions. The beauty of an act of creation shows in the colors of the tools, or in the movements of the artist. Put together, the world of creation in all of its form creates a world that will always thrive because it is built on the premise of embracing our power to believe in the most ethereal of actions: our thoughts. We turn our thoughts into a reality that no one else can create in quite the same way, which is the beauty of our individual talents. Alone, they can be singularly powerful. Together, they become a riot of competing and complimentary that has the possibility to become something bigger than the singular because of the combined belief in them.

It’s a powerful world that we can create if we understand that celebrating the differences is all about creating a single, beautiful point that can encompass the universe in its entirety.

A Space Shuttle Lands In NY

The Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101) is going to its new home at the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum complex in New York. A model of the museum that will be based in the Hell’s Kitchen shows an open air concept that will allow the visitors to walk alongside the Enterprise as she is pointing towards the sky in perpetual flight. Although she’s now a grounded bird, it’s good to see that they won’t keep her cooped up in a hanger where she can’t see that wild blue yonder that she loves so much. I hope that the other three space shuttles are treated with equal respect to their amazing legacy.  – found through a Modern Met post -> Intrepid Museum

An Amazing Clock Is 600

http://youtu.be/in9BgR-P5b4

Time is our constant companion, and we carry its representation with us in the forms of clocks and other timepieces. I found this video on Youtube on the Astronomical Clock in Prague, and you simply have to watch it all the way through. Last year was the 600th anniversary of this amazing clock, and the team of the Macula, Michal Kotek, Lukáš Duběda, data-live, and Tomato Production completed an amazing video-mapping show that has to be seen to be believed. Watch and enjoy – I did!

Beauty Is All Around

Check out this amazing time-lapsed video called “Ocean Sky” by Alex Cherney at Terrastro.com. It won the overall winner award at the STARMUS astrophotography competition, and it’s easy to see why as it combines two awe-inspiring forces of nature: the ocean and the sky. Wow, Australia has such an amazing star-gazing landscape! Check out more of Alex’s jaw-dropping videos on his site, because it is unreal…

The night sky is one of the most stupendous sights to behold because of its beauty and its immensity. Brilliant flashes shimmer like diamonds against a velvet background that allows us to create what we want in our minds. Of course many of us can’t see it as Alex does in his part of the world, because of the light pollution created by an ever-increasing urban sprawl. What I wouldn’t give to be able to stretch out on a blanket and just stare up at the stars and let my mind loose to contemplate…everything (and perhaps nothing as it sometimes should).

Osgemeos’ Fermata

If you’re in Brazil, then head over to Museu Vale for Osgemeos‘ exhibition entitled Fermata. Osgemeos is name of the street artist brothers, Otavio and Gustavo, who work in Brazil using their amazing imaginations to create a world of such childlike innocence that also speaks of the socioeconomic realities that our societies brings to the world. The colorful characters that they bring to life in their works speak of what’s on their minds, playfully inviting us in for a fully immersive experience. Their biography is an interesting read (thanks to Google translate) that talks about how the brothers differentiate the spirit of their street art vs. commercial gallery work. I know that this is a battle that many creatives wage when producing any work, so it’s good to hear how others cope with these thoughts.

I would so love to experience this exhibit as it reminds me of a scene from Willy Wonka’s factory. Whimsical creativity is one of my favorite forms of expression!

Joe Fenton’s Joy Riders

This piece called The Joyriders by Joe Fenton is a marvel of detailed wonder. I found this when cruising through Behance’s network, and you really need to go there to take a close look at this piece. It deserves a ton of attention because each segment contains a wonderfully playful group of creatures in their voracious pursuits. Joe’s magical graphite touch can also be seen in this video for another piece that he posted on Vimeo: Continue reading

False Promises

Warning: This is my release of frustrations towards the ineptitude of business management. No, I don’t claim that their job is easy, but some things are just common sense.

We’ve entered the last quarter of the 2011 business year, and once again I’m hearing about a practice in manufacturing (and other business sectors) that I deplore: the year-end layoff. For companies who run their business with eyes only for numbers (like bottom lines), this is a continuous cycle that I’ve even been a part of in the past. What completely blows my mind (and my temper) is the callous decision to affect a person’s life during the holiday season (repeatedly). It wouldn’t be so bad if a business learned from prior mistakes, but I have yet to see any enlightenment on their part. I’m sure that executives at the top of the company lament about their actions in public, but if they really did feel bad then why don’t they watch their actions and their decisions during the rest of the year outside of what is supposed to be a joyous time? Maybe even practice being proactive instead of reactive. Continue reading

Manifesto

I found this blog post through a tweet and had to share it. We all write manifestos about something that moves us to act. Kyra Choucroun and Robert Reed created 8 illustrated manifestos from the 1000 change makers manifestos at the Hub Westminster’s 2011 Changemakers Fayre. This particular one is my favorite because its sentiment is something that I’m also trying to accomplish. I’m in the process of making my own manifesto come to life (will share when it’s ready). What would your manifesto say?

History Never Looked Like This!

Fashion photography is usually pretty straightforward. In this case, the image is anything but a historical masterpiece. Natalie Dybisz, aka Miss Aniela, creates surreal fashion photography that melds dreams into historical fashion to create an almost theatrical photo production that draws the viewer into the image’s narrative. The image above is my most favorite from the My Modern Met’s post by Pinar. The contributors there have an amazing eye for finding some true inspiration in our creative world. But this image called “Storm Door” is something on another level altogether, as is all of Natalie’s work because they hint at the different artistic styles that impact her eye for beauty. Miss Aniela really has a beautiful mind, and makes a history that never looked like this. Thanks Pinar from My Modern Met for this jaw-dropping deep beauty. And for reminding me that it’s been a while since I experienced through a museum exhibit.

Don’t forget to read Miss Aniela’s interesting interview on My Modern Met!
