Thought For The Day – What Makes People Say Things They Do

This isn’t only about #OWS – it’s also about people who simply refuse to see another perspective on any topic.

No matter how much I think about it, I can’t come up with a good answer. I was reading a great article in the NY Times about bringing children to Occupy Wall Street as a civics lesson (and so much more). It’s been awhile since I read any good balanced articles about this people’s movement in the mainstream news sector. If the news had been more precise with actual footage of what transpires at any Occupy location (which is not lacking because there is a ton out there on blogs and social media), then I wouldn’t have to be continually disenchanted at the state of humanity in the USA.

Take these for instance:

Lines Create Wonder

Art is in the detail. Artists will go to any lengths to get that image in their head into reality. The wonder comes into play when those lines create something that blows our minds. It’s amazing to watch someone in the creative process, because you’re watching a vision given life through love and dedication. Every creation is a moment of pure inspiration that is unique and meaningful. Each viewer will take their own experience away with them, and use that feeling to make something themselves to keep the cycle going.

Jason Sho Green has an incredible eye that sees way more into details than most of us. That might have something to do with his start in life as an electrical engineer. His line drawings have depth that can only be found by looking close. Did you notice anything? Look again – it’s the entire history of Stan Lee inside Stan Lee. How profound is that circular thought?  I bow down to his patience in completing works like this. And I take hope that anyone can re-imagine a life by working hard to create their dream into reality. Amazing!

Jason, your lines are full of life!

3D Printing Making A Shellter Home

I just saw this amazingly hopeful use for a 3D printer: making shellters for homeless hermit crabs. Makerbot is working with Miles Lightwood of Team Team USA on a crowd-sourcing project called Project Shellter. The concept is for people to send in their designs for the hermit crab shells, which will be printed and tested on hermit crabs to see which design attracts them.

Because hermit crabs change shells frequently through their lives, shells of varying sizes are needed to accommodate their growth. As there is a lack of shells for them to use, they are using anything they can find to create their protective home. We have to wonder if our actions that affect air and water quality are also affecting the longevity of their shells. So, this is a wonderful way to use 3D printing in order to protect another species. Hopefully, the proper biodegradable materials are used to help keep things safe for all. Science and art coming together in the most inspirationally creative way!

An Artist Draws A New Red Riding Hood

Daniel Egnéus takes us through his creative process for Red Riding Hood. I found this artist through a post by Ape on the Moon and had to find out more about his work. My search led to the video above and so much amazing color and feeling. To me, his art gives off a feel of the Toulous Lautrec-style impressionism with so much more vivacity and feeling. An additional reward is that he illustrated the Brother’s Grimm story of Red Riding Hood in a beautiful watery explosion of lines and color. I read that he grew up inspired by the comic stylings of Will Eisner, Jack Davis and Mad magazine. I am so glad that so many people really do see the treasures that the world of comics hold within their diverse pages. Continue reading

This Is What Democracy Looks Like

Tell me what democracy looks like. This is what democracy looks like!

If you’ve been to a march at any Occupy group, you’re familiar with this chant. It’s one of the main calls that they state with pride, and the biggest belief that powers every action they contemplate and accomplish. The GA is painful in its length, but beautiful in its intent. What might look like chaos is actually uplifting to experience, because you’re watching a mass of people with diverse opinions talk, listen, and show respect (in most cases). The actions are still depicted by most mainstream media as a bunch of hooligans who just like to cause trouble. Kind of sounds like those patriots who started this country, doesn’t it? So, if our country’s history is built on just such moments as these, then how can they be wrong?

People who love something so dearly that they will sacrifice their own comforts and safety should be respected, and not ridiculed, for their devotion. But then, those who are getting hurt and ridiculed don’t really feel the pain because there’s something much more important to them. We all hold something in our hearts to such high esteem, but may choose to react in a much different manner when supporting it. Actions don’t always have to be louder than words. Actions and words hold a different kind of power when combined into a single source. But the vision of what could be is the loudest of all, and we can all help to build it with our own skills and visions.

The image above came from Issue 3 of Occupy Wall Street Journal, and is by Beth Whitney. Can’t you just see the power radiating from this collaboration? This really is what democracy looks like. Pure, concentrated participation like we hardly ever see anymore. This alone makes this Occupy movement a resounding success. What more #OWS and its brethren will accomplish is something everyone is looking upon with baited breath. This is a walk on the wild side, and it’s happening everywhere.

Dandelions On Your Mind

Regine Ramseier got some wonderfully calming inspiration by a poem by Hermann Hesse:

The small white room contains a large window, which locks out the green of the park. The dandelion sky is coming from the door to the window and it seems as if the flowers carried out of the room, the light and the day to meet. But still they hang in the room and are permanent. Captured in my memory. They will not return. But the golden meadows, this I know, the dandelions, they will return next spring.

So she took that inspiration and made it come to life in a small room at the ArToll Summer Lab 2011. Here’s a project document that Regine created for this project. Hold your breath so the dandelions stay as full as they started. After all, these little dandelions are a part of our childhood memories, and we all have blown a dandelion or two’s seeds into the warm summer winds.

Nature With A Twist

Design takes on a new twist when it is incorporated in the growth and maturation of your canvas, or should I say trees. Vision Division conceived this design which is based on the concept of patience as the main ingredient, as it will take about 60 years to come to fruition. Do yourself a favor and go to their Patient Gardner post from Vision Division and step your way through the entire design process. It’s a fascinating study that methodically takes the reader from concept to tools to the final creation of the study retreat. Cherry blossoms are always a welcome sight during spring, and this retreat will also be a welcome experience that embraces nature with ethics, care, and support. Reminds me of an Alice in Wonderland scene. Bravo, Vision Division, for designing with a conscience!

A Doc’s Brush Strokes

Wow! This painting called “All Caught Up” by Danny O’Conner, who’s also known as DOC, is gorgeous! Layer upon layer of tone and shade that gives the image such depth and movement. Take a look at DOC’s site and Flickr page to get acquainted with some of his other works.

He’s a powerful painter who uses abstractions to depict beauty in such a momentous way. Viewing an image, you can get an impression of the subject’s personality as DOC sees her (he clearly loves female figures).

Don’t forget to take a closer look at some of pencil renderings that start off one of his creations. You can already see the power of his strokes even before DOC’s brushes take over.

Paper Comes Alive Delightfully

I seriously love paper, especially when it becomes decoratively vibrant. Paper scroll work allows art to become 3-dimensional in such a delicate way.  My Modern Met covered artist Yulia Brodskaya with her latest creation, so I decided to visit her site and was so glad that I did. She has completed a lot of ad campaigns for some large companies, but her style also translate in a similar manner when she draws. Her mind must be a beautiful place to visit, because she manages to depict movement in such a lovely yet lively way. I’m keeping my eye on Yulia and her amazing scroll work! Thanks again, My Modern Met.

Get Well – Scott Olsen

I’ve been thinking about him since I heard (and saw via video) about his injury, and can’t believe that I didn’t post anything. I have one simple wish for Scott Olsen, that courageous Iraq-war veteran who was hurt in Occupy Oakland two days ago: GET WELL SOON! It’s preposterous that Scott was hurt at the hands of police officers who are supposed to protect, especially since he escaped injury in two tours to Iraq. I don’t want to post the injured picture of him, because I want him to return to how he looks above (picture from Occupy Wall Street).

This should not happen in the USA  or anywhere – ever! I’m joining my well wishes to those others going out to him from everywhere.
