BabyTattooville strikes again in 2011

Once again, it was a star-studded field of artists extraordinaire for Baby Tattooville 2011. It’s an exclusive and intimate look at some of the leading artists, and a week-long playground of interactions with them in the world of art that we all love. Though the entry price is a bit steep, this kind of event will leave memories that you’ll carry with you for life, so it’s pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime kind of moment (or string of them). To anyone who gets the chance to visit this yearly swim amongst the art stars, I say congratulations! I’ll admire from afar, and leave it to those who would just about do anything to be a part of it all.

Walls Coverings Say Something More

Erwin Kho, a Rotterdam-based illustrator, makes statements with his adorable creations. For example, the image above shows an extract from a wall covering named Roots that depicts the possibilities of how Earth was inhabited by the forced migrations of smaller species to other land masses. It seems like this kind of creative ingenuity can awaken the minds of a child to all sorts of lessons that they’ll choose to seek because of what their eyes see. Erwin realizes that a curious mind can become an awakened mind with just a little push. He’s done many more series just like this one, so go check out his Behance profile page. With as many walls as we surround ourselves with, why not make dual use of even sections of them as storybook pages? After all, a mind is a terrible thing to waste (and so is wall space).

Taking Our World Back

This image is probably the best image I can think of to describe the world that I want. Note that the paper clips are colorful, and not monotone. That to me is the most important thing of all. Respecting the unique, but realizing that when they’re brought together, we have a rainbow of possibilities. They are not just simple paper clips. Oh no, they’re so much more:

  • Even alone, they can gather diverse sets of ideas and “clip” them together into something completely new.
  • Seen together, they show endless possibilities for mixing it up through unique collaborations.
  • Linked, they can become a chain that can be used in innovative ways to create.
  • Across time, their configurations can change dynamically and bring about new opportunities. Continue reading

Melting Existence

Looking through My Modern Met, I came across an artist whose work is showing in the Anthro[physis] exhibition at the Rivera Gallery. The concept is the relationship between humanity and its surrounding habitat. Néle Azevedo‘s pieces in particular caught my eye because of her use of ice sculptures. Melting Men is her contribution to the urban intervention project called Minimum Monument, which is a critical response to the various impacts of public monuments built for posterity in cities.

Néle intended these miniature ephemeral sculptures to be temporary remembrances of any person, with the collection taking on the importance because of their impact on our psyche. Their long-term memories exists in our minds and in our shared images, yet their disappearance speaks to the fleeting importance that we all have in the context of time. The number of melting sculptures countered the real-life permanent sculptures that existed in that city or town, so that their sheer numbers became the predominant comment towards the necessity of monuments.

It’s a pretty powerful statement for us to think deeper into the commemorative decisions that we make, so that we take more into account than we currently do. Are there better ways to commemorate a person’s contribution to society that don’t have to become grand building projects? Did the people even get any opportunity to comment on their creation? And what about those hidden masses who do just as much, but are barely even thanked? Some things to think about…

As Néle chooses to ask, how do we fit into this world?

Saving the Hidden

Some people dream big. And some people act big. Responsibility belongs to each and every one of us. It moves our daily thoughts and actions (usually). But for some, it becomes a mission that takes on particular urgency when there are those involved who aren’t driven by responsibility. This is one of those cases.

Scott Wallace is a writer, photographer, and journalist who has spent his life working with conflict and its repercussions. Now, he is taking on the safety of the few indigenous tribes who have been living in isolation from the outside world. But now that resources are becoming harder to gather, those of us in the outside world are encroaching on territories to gather much-needed resources without thinking of the repercussion to those who have lived peacefully and naturally. The battle between protection of us and them has led to the typical posturing of both sides, but no actual protection to our true responsibility. We’ve used up our resources. Power doesn’t give us the right to plunder those of others. This is our warning that we need to take our responsibilities much more seriously. Life is not a game of Risk. Life isn’t even a game. It’s reality, and it’s time is now. Continue reading

Solar Spain

It’s so cost prohibitive that it’s simply not worth it! That’s the typical talking point for why we should not pursue green technology. And yet, all around us are the reasons that we should:

  • Limited (easy) resources remaining;
  • Rising costs to extract them;
  • Increased pollution;
  • Detrimental environmental impacts;
  • Stewardship responsibility.

A new solar power plant in Seville, Spain is putting its money where it’s mouth is. A collaboration between Abu Dhabi’s Masdar and Spain’s SENER, this venture is called Torresol Energy and it’s mission is the “reinventing of solar power”. The Gemasolar power plant is located in the sunniest region of Spain, and is expected to produce 110 GWh/year. They will be able to generate 6,500 hours of electrical power, which is 1.5 to 3 times more than current renewable energies, to power 25,000 homes and reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions by 30,000 tons per year. This is what we accomplish when we ignore modern wisdom and trust our true needs.

Beautiful Environment

Nature always knows how to make the perfect melody of color, light, and movement. The fog bank flowing over Conzelman Road in San Francisco was captured by Terance Chang in this quietly majestic image that takes your breath away. Doesn’t it remind you of a quiet winter morning during the holiday season? Check out Terance’s Flickr page to see some more beautiful fog captures. The man knows his weather patterns, and nature continues to inspire.

Reasons For Our Discontent

It’s pretty easy to see the multitude of problems that are the reasons for our discontent. Though it’s so hard to trace things back to a distinct area where the problems exist. Mostly because you just need to look around to see that there is a lot that we need to fix. Lots of us are trying, some are still denying. So, this is to those of you who aren’t as convinced as those who are voicing their discontent with the world.

Get The Message Now?

Sometimes messages don’t come out as clearly as we would like them. Especially when the deliverers and the audience are so IMMENSE. Not just in volume of sound, or volume of body, but in volume of mind. All of those thoughts that are trying to be heard at the same time. All of the truths that are fighting to be uncovered in the same instance. All of the lies which are fighting for survival. That’s a lot of stuff to get out into a sound bite. Which side will be comprehended, and not just heard? It’s not something that happens overnight. But the more we listen to the words, the clearer the image becomes in our head. These aren’t just simple strategies, or keywords, or ideologies. They’re our lives, so they mean so much more. And here is Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine letting out some more words for those who may still not get why people are occupying. And like he says, if you don’t get it after this, well maybe it’s not meant for you. Jeez, what a sweet rhythm!

Find a way to get your voice heard, so that maybe finally, we can make change happen towards the good. We really, really need it more than ever!

Special Correspondence

A tweet sent me to the site called Letters of Note, which had me perusing out of curiosity. The letters are an amazing glimpse into the minds of some of the most historical people of time past and present. But considering that I’m a writer who grew up with science fiction, the letter above caught my attention. Isaac Asimov wrote many of the books that got me hooked onto the genre (though there were many, many more inspirations, he was my first). He opened my eyes and mind to possibilities that transferred me to an alternate place in my universe. Reading the words above, it’s no mistake why he became a writer. It’s also pretty evident that I have so much inspiration to follow that I can’t do anything but what I chose to do. Write. Create. Try.

p.s. Seriously go read some of the letters that are posted there. You will find something that will inspire your actions.
