Understanding One Another

Warning: This Ted Talk clip is very honest. Some of the images are extremely graphic and disturbing, but they must be seen in order to understand Jehane’s point of view that we have to see both sides of the story.

Jehane Noujaim wants just one thing: world peace. No, she’s not practicing for a beauty pageant. She wants us to meet one another, no matter where we are in the world. Only when we see someone in their natural environment will we be able to truly understand their lives and their motivations. Interestingly enough, she is a product of mixed heritages which has beautifully colored the world that she wants everyone to see (boy, can I relate) and feel. No, there isn’t always beauty in some of her imagery, but there is purity in her intent. It moves people to want to change. She is just capturing what we all put out there with our many times thoughtless actions. Continue reading

Trying To Wrap Your Mind Around Complexity

These are some of the most complex topics that describe philosophical systems of human value models. We use these singular words to create an all-encompassing definition that categorizes people’s beliefs. Typically, these words are inflammatory when arguing in verbal ideological warfare. Now, UK graphic designer Genis Carreras has created posters with minimalistic iconography that will help to identity these complex models that leave no room for argument, simply because they’re stripped down to their basic meaning. Be sure to check out his site to see the full range of philosophical posters that he’s created. See if they help you wrap your mind around the theory, and help you pick your personal philosophical way of life.  – found in a DesignTaxi post

HOW Did I Miss These Guys – Fat Freddy’s Drop

I owe a big thanks to Gisele N. Mendez, one of my followers (this is so cool that people are following me – thanks everyone!!!!) for putting this out there so that I could find it. The song’s called Wandering Eye, but it’s making my mind wander in wonder. I can’t believe that I don’t know about these guys, because they are seriously AMAZING!!! I need to open my ears to the world back up again, because I am obviously missing some great inspirations. I’m a bad girl (ok, that didn’t come out right…).

Anyways, WOW, do yourself a favor and check these guys out: Fat Freddy’s Drop. They are a New Zealand band who’s been playing together since 1999, and I can’t stop listening once I start. Their brand of music mixes dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno, but their beats just leave you wanting more. A whole lot more! OMG, I’ve got to get their music on my iPod (yes, one of my weaknesses – I caved ages ago like a sinkhole). New Zealand isn’t only a gorgeous place that I’d love to visit, but their music is also wickedly insane if this is what’s on offer. LOVE! : ) Continue reading

Sustainable Farming

http://youtu.be/aMfSGt6rHos

Yes, today seems to be about discomfort. But it’s for the greater good, right?

Mexican restaurant Chipotle wanted to celebrate their return to sustainable farming, so they asked UK designer and director John Kelly to create a commercial spot that best expressed their beliefs. After seeing this piece of amazing creativity, I’d have to say the he did a phenomenal job. And others are agreeing. It’s this type of work and inspiration by people and companies that gives us hope that we can make things happen when we work for it.

And Chipotle’s got it right: Cultivate a Better World.

Stunt Poetry

So I decided to end this on a beautiful note. Here is Rishi Kaneria‘s soothing take, Stunt Poetry. He captured professional stuntman, Dante Ha, as he went through his moves in a way that can only be described as poetry in motion. Yes, motion has it’s own beauty that has to be experienced through immersion. Movement is beautiful, and so is Stunt Poetry!

A Truthful Logo

I couldn’t stop giggling when I saw these creations. Swedish designer, Viktor Hertz, wanted to show a corporate logo as it should really look. These logos tell an uncomfortable truth that the companies probably won’t find very humorous, but the rest of us will (as we avoid looking at ourselves in the mirror).

Ugh – Think Outside Of The Box, Please

Here’s a technical post that seemed necessary after listening to the world gasping lately. Why are we so hell bent on keeping the rules going that are literally putting a stranglehold on our processes? This question pretty much pertains to all walk of lives, though I’m aiming it at some large companies who don’t think outside of the box (I know, I know).

Every business out there knows that they have to market and advertise in order to be seen above their field. And they spend obscene amounts of money doing just this. I think that all of the money spent in the pursuit of glory is about as smart as putting lawn decorations out on your yard to make your house look homey (if that really is the goal?). If only they spent as much time polishing their inner workings! Continue reading

The World Of 100

We live in a diverse world that is becoming more intertwined everyday. We are The Global Community, also known as humanity. Designer Tony Ng wanted to present this world to us with irrefutable facts, and so The World of 100 postcards were born. Simple facts presented with colorful imagery that makes the numbers more relatable and fun. – from a DesignTaxi post

Yasuyuki Okamura Is Catchy

Japanese musician and dancer Yasuyuki Okamura is writing a new song, Bu-shaka Loop. I mean that he’s writing the song as he’s singing it. And coughing. On paper and then on Twitter. The video is as much fun to watch as it is to listen to. And it’s sweet that he’s letting us come along for the creative ride. Give it a shot! You can’t help but smile while listening to this. The rhythm grabs you (at least it did for me), even if the lyrics are pretty much sounds and nonsensical phrases. And all of this leads to his new double album release, Etiquette.

Judging by the comments on his YouTube page, his fans are seriously siked about this one. I’m with them.

A Child Speaks

If we adults cannot communicate about topics of vital importance, then maybe we should rewatch this video of Severn Cullis-Suzuki speaking at the Rio Earth Summit back in 1992. There isn’t much to add to such eloquence except, THANK YOU Severn. She’s also known as “The Girl Who Silenced the World for 6 Minutes”, but to me that does her a great injustice. Her words will resound forever. We shouldn’t have to hear this from a 9-year old!

Thank goodness for so many wonderful people like her, who are working to make a difference for us all and for this beautiful planet that we call home.
