Comics Can Open The Mind

This won’t be a long post, because I want you to read the whole interview(s) put up by Joe Mulvey (click on the microphone above). Joe runs a blog, DisCiPLinEd IrrEveREncE (wow, that wasn’t easy to type), where he shares his love for comics and tries to convert non-believers to the comic cause. Needless to say, this blog, or experiment, or whatever you call it is genius (and painful at times)!

I grew up with comics and love many different types of genres (though I’m more partial to art that draws me before the story, but they both have to be good). After having lived in Japan for so long, I still read many manga titles. Not only do I adore the great art, but I also get to practice my Japanese. Since I was always moving every few years during my youth, books in any form were my constant companions. I really believe that comics, along with other books, were instrumental in opening up my mind to all of the possibilities out there. If you haven’t tried them, well, now might be a great time. It doesn’t matter what your age is, because creativity is inspiring at any age. The stuff coming out today in the comic world has to be seen to be believed. Absolutely amazing stuff waiting to be discovered. So go and have some fun reading comics!

Confronting the Comfortable Is Uncomfortable

Rather an obvious statement, isn’t it? And yet, when no one steps up to confront something bad because it’s acceptable to the majority, then it really is counterproductive in terms of finding a solution for the bad. In this case, I’m talking about denials of broken architecture that clearly should have been replaced decades ago. We all know that things aren’t working right, but we don’t want to be the first to admit it. What will everyone think when you say it out loud? Being a ground breaker isn’t the most popular path. If it were, then we would all be innovating left and right. Instead, we all try to see if we can just tweak it, just a little, so that we can survive our stay within that bad architecture for another day. But would we do anything about it if it impacted us personally on such a large scale that it can’t be ignored any longer? I really would like to think that someone would call the bad ridiculous, and push for a fix or even provide a better solution. Continue reading

The Ride Is Beautiful

If you’re a fan of bikes (as in the peddling kind), then you might want to check out this magazine. The Ride is an artistically beautiful piece, where design and content is obviously highly prided. And they have a huge following which supports each new release of the journal. This is clearly a labor of love, as most good creations are. I’m not exactly an enthusiast for bikes, but I am an enthusiast for good creations, and this one is way better than good. Writing, visuals, design, production is on par with the best of the best. Now, I’m going to kick back and enjoy this feast for the eyes. Thanks again, DesignTaxi, for this tremendous find!

Making You Think

Is this taking things too far? At Paris’ Orly airport, they are experimenting with virtual boarding agents, in the form of 2-D holograms, to help you find your destination. “Bonjour! I invite you to go to your boarding gate. Paris Airports wishes you a bon voyage,” is the virtual agent’s conversational piece as it holds the destination name in front. A little boy tried to talk to a different hologram, but it didn’t respond to his friendly “Hello!”.

So, is this an improvement over an information kiosk? In order for them to work, a human attendant has to activate them. Hmmm, I’m not sensing much help here, unless the real agent is just too tired to smile at any more passengers or repeat the same words over and over. The agency, L’Oeil du Chat, was tasked with modernizing Hall 40 of the airport. Maybe they watched “Blade Runner” one too many times. Judging by the commentaries on Yahoo News, this project isn’t going to be a raging success. I’m all for innovation, but really, this is the best that they could come up with? Maybe they didn’t have an unlimited budget to tap into the inspirational.

Don’t Make The American Dream An Oxymoron

We have walked on the moon. We created a machine that allowed us to fly like the birds. We have always done things bigger because our dreams have always been big. So what happened?

Now we are glued to the happenings of bachelors and bachelorettes. We follow the latest trends to see if we can ride on its coattails. We reinvent the already invented to see if we can eek out a few more years to maximize profit. We thrive on being the same, yet revile societies that really are homogenous. We strangle creativity and thinking outside of the box, unless some guru tells us that we need to do it because it’s the latest craze. Something is not making a whole lot of sense here. So what happened?

We built this country from our dreams. We need to ignore those who say that it can’t be done. If someone tells us to stop dreaming, then we have to ask why? Why shouldn’t we keep dreaming bigger and better dreams? After all, our biggest dreams created a country. We just need to do what is calling to us and prove that it can be done, through passion and dedication. We need to go back to the philosophy that the American Dream isn’t only about physical ownership. It’s also got to inspire intellectual freedom.

  • Let’s look at the possibilities of new untested opportunities.
  • Let’s listen to advice, but only follow it when it makes sense.
  • Let’s become inspired by what we find on undiscovered paths.
  • Let’s open our hearts to it when the unexpected beckons.
  • Let’s learn something new and use it in our daily lives.
  • Let’s reach out to one another and help create…everything.
  • Let’s turn our backs on NO, and simply innovate a YES.

Think of those pencils as your dreams waiting to be drawn so that they can become reality. There are enough oxymorons to mock. Don’t help others turn the American Dream into another one. Just simply dream, then do. It’s supposed to be what we’re good at, right?

Musical And Visual Joy

Yes, more stumbling has led me to list of many incredible sites which allow you to interact and create with them. They draw me to them because of my love of sound, my curiosity for experimentation (within reason) , the gorgeous graphics, and the ability to immerse yourself into the experience. You should try some of them out! Puts the music into your soul, so that you are inspired to create something for yourself (or for others). Ah, I do love the audio symphony that they each provide. – found through Bizarre Websites to kill time with style as covered by Smashing Magazine. Except for Neostream which has been a favorite of mine for years – I really miss playing with Shockboy.

Thought For The Day – Advertising Can Drive You Nuts

Like a lot of you out there, I visit a ton of sites everyday to find creative inspirations, get the latest news, watch videos, and a whole lot more.

Thought for the day: Exactly how many ads does a person need on their web page, in their emails, or coming through the phones? It’s the one thing that can turn a normally nice person into a babbling brook of sales broadcasts.

There are advertisements being thrown at us every minute of every day from somewhere in this world, and yet it’s not always raising our levels of happiness. Unless it involves a cute baby, or puppy, or dancing monsters. Well, anything that’s so unusual or adorable that it brings a timid smile to our face or sends us ROTFL (rolling on the floor laughing, for you luddites):

(and no, I am NOT advertising for Blockbuster – I just love this commercial)

Wow – I Just Found Nimit Malavia

Stumbleupon has done it again. This time I stumbled on the site of the jaw-droppingly talented Canadian artist, Nimit Malavia, and I couldn’t be happier. He resides in Ottawa,  Ontario, where he creates his graphite and paint wonders that are gorgeous in every line stroke and color splash. His style reminds me of James Jean with a little touch of Alphonse Mucha. And he’s already gotten recognition from his peers, having recently (January 2011) won the Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators for his piece “&”. Take a look at his site and blog, and tell me that you don’t agree that this guy has some talent! And if you still need convincing, take a look at one of my favorite drawings of his, The Little Things. Didn’t I tell you?! He’s part of the “A Taste Of Things To Come” group show at the Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco, which will be open until August 25, 2011.

When You Have To Fight For Your Words

When I read posts and articles written by business people, I am honestly amazed that they accomplish anything. Validate this. Test that. Measure this. Validate it again. Have a meeting. Let’s meet to brainstorm about the meeting. Honestly, it’s like watching water flowing down a drain. I try not to judge, but it’s difficult because I used to be in that environment and saw the gaping hole at its core. No, I’m not talking about all companies as I haven’t worked at every company in existence. But I am talking about those industries (like manufacturing) that are among the slowest to change in socially positive ways. I keep hoping that someone in that group will get it right. Whatever “it” is supposed to be. Performance based solely on ROI are words that aren’t in my active vocabulary (not that they ever were). When I worked in the corporate world, I was a humanist fighting against a mechanized engine. Parts were interchangeable, but the design stayed stagnant. It’s no wonder why things are falling apart all around them. They forgot that innovation is that very necessary lifeblood for new creations to provide growth and transformation opportunities.
