Imagine With Reason, Unless…

Imagination is the key to creativity. But it’s not only used in the artistic sense. It’s used by every living creature, so that they can grow and survive in their environment. And sometimes it’s used to give us a boost of an adrenaline rush. But in unknown situations or surroundings, it can also kick start our fight or flight instincts which can lead us to stop thinking coherently. This can have disastrous effects if reasoning isn’t used in conjunction with imagination during those critically decisive moments outside of life or death situations. Imagination is great when you’re innovating, but it has to be tempered with the right logical counterbalance when you’re simply surviving.

NatGeo Makes A House Go Up

If you’ve seen the Pixar movie, Up, then you’ll be familiar with this scene. National Geographic wanted to make this movie a reality, and set about making it happen with a huge crew of experts ranging from balloon pilots to scientists. And during this feat, they actually set a new world’s record for the largest balloon cluster flight ever attempted. Not bad for a day’s (well more than 1 for sure) work! Congrats, Nat Geo. You’ve got a very beautiful view from your windows – I would love to be one of those pilots! And this also proves that if you love flying, you’ll do whatever’s necessary to get back up into the sky.

If you want to see more about the story, check out their blog post on the project.

Sometimes I Feel Selfish Until…

If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. How many times have we been given this warning? And yet, we still wait with baited breath when something new and shiny fills us with temptation. Last week, I was offered a reward that made me feel like someone was finally noticing that I’m trying to make a difference in this world. I know that it’s a big task which I’ve barely started, but it’s one that I want to help with so I persevere day after day with my writing – even when naysayers claim that it’s ultimately selfish to do so. Well, today I heard the details about my “reward” and didn’t feel quite so sparkly about it. Yes, reality reared its foot again, and I was underneath its downward trajectory. I won’t bore you with the details, except to say that it felt wrong so I had to refuse.

I was honest in my refusal. I didn’t feel like I would be a good fit for what they had in mind. Nice words about what a great contribution I’d made didn’t feel so nice when I understood that it wasn’t about my accomplishments, but about their goals. I was saving us all from future pain as I can’t possibly promote something that I don’t fully believe in myself. But now that I haven’t even heard anything back since my refusal, I’m feeling a bit guilty. Honesty can sometimes be a real pain in the a** when it forces you to let someone else down. I have to remember that I’ll never make everyone happy all of the time. Continue reading

Urbanology – A Game That Resembles Reality?

What an appropriate time to create this game, Urbanology. BMW Guggenheim Lab has released this online game that allows the player to create urban settings based on their desired characteristics, in order to see how successful the model will be. Considering that our society worldwide is in tatters, maybe the real leaders of the world might want to follow the results closely to see how the people will fare with their own growth models. It’ll be interesting to see if a model comes out that can fix the mess that we’re currently in. Because I’m not counting on the real world fixing itself at the hands of those currently in charge. Hopefully, the people do better – though the initial attempts gave strange results.

Action By Pencil

Phenomenally realistic Colombian graphite illustrator, Cesar Del Valle, has put out a drawing series of his subjects interacting with their supposed environment. The character’s action is so realistically drawn to coordinate with the setting that you have to look twice to see if Cesar didn’t somehow take a picture.

But no, these were indeed drawn with his very talented hands and a pencil. Go to his Behance page and take a closer look at some of his drawings. You’ll be amazed.

Seasteading Institute

One of my favorite entrepreneurs, Peter Thiel, is at it again on a very, very large scale. Like the rest of us, he sees the failings of our current governmental systems and has funded a solution created by Patri Friedman, who is also the grandson of Milton Friedman: The Seasteading Institute. If we choose to look at governments as entrepreneurial businesses, then the people involved in these floating island micronations will be instrumental in creating and nurturing them along with their leaders. They can create the next evolutionary step in societal and political structures that will foster those characteristics that allow for freedom, innovation, and growth in the 21st century and beyond. This isn’t a new idea, but it definitely is a timely solution.

Now, I find this idea pretty tempting because I have little faith that our current societal and political structures will survive much longer because of the intolerable inequalities and pain to the masses. I’m a little cool to the “sea” part of seasteading as I’m not overly fond of swimming or slimy things. Now put out a venture for spacesteading, and I’ll be all over it as I love anything to do with space and flying. Plus, the greater distances from land-based civilizations will inherently decrease their opportunities to interfere with progress. But no matter the location, the idea has great potential as those involved will be directly involved in the birth of new government and its corresponding societal trappings, much like our pioneering forefathers. Hopefully, these micronations will have none of the polarization that’s currently killing our chances of survival here on land.

What do you think about this idea?

Today I Stumbled

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNHE9-cBFZ0&feature=related

Writers need inspiration or their well goes dry. You’ve heard me say this before. Any creative person will tell you that the key to their prolific offerings comes from a continually changing landscape of inspirations. Sometimes tumultuous inspiration can lead to passionate phrasing, but it can quickly devolve the entire experience of creation if the wrong path is followed.

So today, I temporarily stopped observing conversations in the ether and chose to once again immerse myself into it. It felt like the first wondrous steps I took when I was a fledgling taking off on my Net surfing adventures so many years ago. I am now a child of Stumbleupon and my eyes glow with those unexpected things that are presented to me for my enjoyment. Sometimes being a slow adopter means missing a lot of wonderful opportunities, but at least I’ve woken to the possibilities. Take a look at the video above that I found on the Sky Lantern Festival in Thailand – something that I always wondered about, but didn’t research until it was presented to me.

Sure there were hits and misses in the offerings, but mostly hits so far. I can’t imagine how long it would have taken me if I’d gone the long route. Although there’s nothing wrong with the long route, because it’s a direct and lengthy immersion into the unknown and unexpected. I do love that they call this wonder a discovery engine. How appropriate! So go out there and discover. I’m out there, so maybe we’ll stumble upon one another. I’ll be the one with the wide curious eyes and a big smile on my face as I look around in awe.

Project America

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4eqO1yGBg8

It looks like Kickstarter can start a campaign for just about anything. Now, we have Obama (well, his younger look-alike version) trying to raise enough money to solve our national debt crisis. Obviously, he should have started this a lot earlier than now, but better late than never. At least we can have a sense of humor about this.

But He’s Always Here For Us

“What do you mean it’s MY fault?”, said a tiny but booming voice that sounded like a cannon had gone off. “Of course, it’s not my fault! I’m a pirate, and everyone knows that little boys love pirates!”

“But, it can’t be our fault because we bring him little bits of magic for his dreams!”, wailed what sounded like chattering little mice.

“Oh, and you’re going to blame us, I suppose? We’re the league of superheroes and we’re the role models for little boys.”, sounded a voice that posed as proudly as its owner.

A little boy with golden locks rolling in unruly abandon around his head sat at his desk, looking at the sky outside of his window with little notice for the bouncing little voices. The pitch of the fight picked up until the sounds seemed like it was coming from an invading army of angry dragonflies. But the little boy took no notice, as he sat in rapture of his daydream.

“Oh no, he can’t even hear us anymore!”, sobbed the soft fairy voice that was usually as bright and happy as the sun. “What will we do?”

The group of fairytale characters clambered up onto the desk using anything that they could to reach the little boy. The golden boy would have been amazed at the sight of little tiny bodies huffing and puffing their way up desk legs, over globes, and past glasses that comically magnified their sparkly personalities. Soon, one by one they reached the book that sat open in front of him. Peering from behind his storybook, they noticed that he was reading one of their stories but hadn’t moved from the first page. Big shiny worried eyes blinked out of tiny little faces as they stared at one another in confusion.

“What do you think it is? Maybe he sees a bird and wants to fly. You fairies should whisper your stories in his ears until he pays attention to us again. Yes, yes, that’s the answer!” The pirate bellowed his answer with glee. “Because I obviously cannot do anything since I cannot fly!”

But somehow the fairies knew that this wouldn’t help their cause. Looking at the superhero, they begged, “Oh, can’t you do anything? After all, you’re everything that a little boy wants to be. And you can fly!”

But the superhero shook his head in resignation. “I don’t think that we will be able to do anything about this until he gets his head out the the clouds. I’ve seen that look before.”

The mice looked at the superhero in confusion. “Well, if you know the answer, then tell the rest of us! What is it? What did we do?” The beady little mice eyes were filled with tears as they all stared up at the larger-than-life (well, to them anyway) figure of the man who looked remarkably like Superman.

“Take a closer look at the book”, said Superman, “and you’ll know what I’m talking about.”

So several little figures clambered onto the book’s page and looked down, then up at the boy, and then back down again. And they all fell down into a heap as they cried out…

“He’s too young to be in LOVE!!”

Yes, on top of that first page of one of his favorite stories lay the picture of a sweet little brunette girl with long cascading curls. They could only hope that this didn’t make him grow up too fast and forget all about them. After all, they still had so many stories left to tell their favorite little dreamer.

Overreacting Works Best In Dramas

We’ve all sat (with teeth gritted) through one or two reality tv dramas. We know that those participants are chosen for being the most outrageous in order to attain some level of notoriety. It’s clear that overreacting seems to be the key to our society today. But in reality, exactly what do we get for all of that excruciating agony (especially for those of us watching)? It’s not as though anyone has proven that they used those logical reasoning skills that supposed to be a characteristics of humans. All that’s shown is that we’re driven strictly by pure emotions, which can be downright scary in potentially confrontational situations like what we saw in San Francisco. It’s also clear that we are in dire need of some better role models.

When an organization already has a bad reputation for overreacting under the best of circumstances, then all they’ve proven is that they’re only capable of one game plan with little deviation. Not exactly a creative or inspirational method to prove the organization’s capability to learn. It’s clear that this is a lesson that we need to take to heart. Because in this case, it may be affecting lessons that we should have already learned. Continue reading
