Signature You

So what would your “signature you” look like? But not just on the outside. Because you probably want to be known just as much for your thoughts and actions, as you would for your appearance as an individual. Most of us would because we’re all complex human beings who have three dimensions.

Remember all of those tests they made you take in high school (do they still do them)? They placed you into certain categories to help you identify your path in life. Did they really help all that much? Or were they kind of like your horoscope – close enough to get the job done? But you’re not made from a cookie cutter, so you probably floated around trying to find your real signature you.

I know that for a long time during my teens and twenties, I was into boots (combat or granny). And they were not the girly-girl types – the clunkier the better for me. Yep, that fit my personality. I was not some delicate china doll, so no designer styles for me. I was (and still am) a dreamer and adventurer who would try anything once (until I got wrapped up in bandages) so that I could find out who I really was. Years later, I still do things pretty much the same, though I’ve learned many lessons to be applied to my methods (and lessen injuries). But my signature you has always been just something comfortable – like an old favorite shirt that had seen better days. If you wrinkled your nose at my wrinkles, well, that’s life. I’ll take it, wrinkles and all.

What makes up your signature you? It’ll be complex, but it’ll be like little gems that lead to the ultimate treasure…YOU!

Lessons

It’s been a while since I did any creative writing, so today seemed like the day to share another new rough. Hope you like this new short called Lessons. Enjoy your holiday weekend with your loved ones.

“Stop! Is that really what you want to do?”
A pale figure emerged from the mist into the darkened alleyway.

“Who are you?”, spat the aggressive giant holding a weak and terrified man on the ground.

“I am the spirit of history. I have been there through all of the lessons of learning. I appear when lessons are in danger of being lost.”

“I don’t need to learn any lessons. I just need to beat this guy down. Then he’ll get the lesson that he obviously needs. Yeah, why don’t I start with your arm, since you tried to rob me.” The giant wielded a monstrous club in his hand, and had a sneer on his face as he spewed out the ugly words. He didn’t seem to notice that the alleyway was changing in hue, becoming threatening even to him. Continue reading

Imagine

I frequently call up images of the universe as I traipse through this digital domain I call home, and they tumble back to my fingertips, each one more magnificent than the last. But something about this image feeds a mind that never stops imagining. Do you see what I see? Do you see the smiling explorer as he is expelled out into the wide unknown expanse of space and time? Perhaps he is excited that what he’ll find will most definitely supersede anything he could imagine? Or perhaps he is just amazed to know that he is part of the cosmos, bound to it down to the most minute levels that make it impossible to separate one from the other?

It’s a comforting thought, isn’t it, to know that you always have a place where you belong? You can go forward knowing that there is a tie that will always bring home with you, no matter how far and long you travel. To know that those travels, whether they be physical or mental, will change you to your very core and open your eyes to each beautiful unknown you seek to discover. You will always be able to create something that is uniquely you, who is inspired by the world that surrounds, and it can be shared to impact change with the world around. Just imagine how powerful your thoughts and actions really are.

Just imagine…

The Necessity Of Nimit

After the questions of necessity (?) drawn up from the last post, you can feel redeemed by viewing the new exhibit, Finding Together Again, of Nimit Malavia which runs from 4/5/2012 to 4/26/2012. As you can see by this image of Remus and Romulus, which makes its debut through the Spoke Art Gallery press release, Nimit has once again placed pencil to paper to create another masterful series. From the show’s description, it looks like he will once again be discovering the range of emotions that takes us through the human experience and drives us through our “moments of crisis”, as seen in the mythical allegories that we grow up with.

If you’ve seen Nimit’s work before, then you know why I’m so obsessed with his renderings. His grasp of life and its contrasts are so powerful that you can only really stare at his creations, trying to take in all of its meaning. If you happen to be in San Francisco, then definitely go check this show out. And know that I will be wishing that I was there with you. Once again, Nimit shows how necessary his work is to the overall conversation of inspiration. I know that I think so.

Do You Know What Time It Is? Staff Meeting Time

I honestly cannot resist the absolute brilliant pointlessness of this video’s theme: staff meeting videos. You’re an ad agency that has done it all, so what is there left to do? Yes, we all love those staff meetings that simply brighten up our day (if you really do, then forgive me if I stare – I’ve never met anyone who actually does). So what could be more kick-me-in-the-pants exciting then featuring them in a promotional video that gives your company the ability to reach your target audience while you’re also sending out warm hugs as it’s recommended in all social media protocols. It’s not good to be human, when you can be HUMAN! You want people to laugh, and you want them to cry, and then you want them to sign with you. It’s your way of becoming the ad gods that you are.

Brought to you by the crazy director Dave Green, Vimeo, and a boatload of really excited staff members who can’t wait to produce staff meeting videos to death. His videos are hilarious bizarre, and will make you forget all about your….oh no, it’s time for a staff meeting…

Real Words

_______________________________________________________________

Going through Letters of Note (which is a tremendously amazing site that you should go visit), I came across two letters that really spoke to me because of the real words:

Fiona Apple – Love is love, and there will never be two much

Kurt Vonnegut –  I am very real

Both are well worth the time for you to read in full, because they address the pressures of our society to conform to some prescribed form of “accepted” norm. You all know that I am not one of those who particularly holds any norm in high regards, especially considering the current state of our society. But I do hold an immense amount of hope in individual actions which call out the sheer ugliness of status quo, and attempt to remold norms into something much more wholesome and accepting of us all. When we’re continually bombarded by narrow-mindedness and bigotry, then it makes our acceptance of life all the more difficult. But it doesn’t have to be that way, and things are finally starting to change towards a new type of open acceptance. It’s hard to create models of people who are and aren’t accepting (for differentiation and identification), because the demographics are too complex. It can’t be divided by such superficial characteristics of age, appearance, or nationality, but it is definitely easy to spot through words and actions (which are fairly consistent globally).

So, how do we go about becoming more open-minded and accepting, without turning it into a pissing contest that has to have only one winner? We haven’t found the full answer yet, but every day one more person adding to the discussion shines even more light on our way of life and what needs to change (and what needs to be nurtured).

Here are small excerpts from both Fionna and Kurt, which shot straight as an arrow into me:

Hate has no place in the equation; there is no function for it to perform. Love is love, and there will never be too much. – Fionna Apple

– I read in the newspaper that your community is mystified by the outcry from all over the country about what you have done. Well, you have discovered that Drake is a part of American civilization, and your fellow Americans can’t stand it that you have behaved in such an uncivilized way. Perhaps you will learn from this that books are sacred to free men for very good reasons, and that wars have been fought against nations which hate books and burn them. If you are an American, you must allow all ideas to circulate freely in your community, not merely your own. – Kurt Vonnegut

A City Alone: Silent World

We’re used to our cities being full of life, but how do they look when all of the activity simply stops? Lucie & Simon put together a photo and film exhibit called Silent World that uses the same neutral density filters that NASA uses for extra-long exposures. This has the added affect of eliminating moving objects like cars and people, so that you’re only left with the stationary. The eeriely beautiful music accompanying the images gives the viewer the feeling that all is not right with this scene. And it’s easy to see why, when you only see one living human being in a sea of structures that were built to house millions. How would you feel if you were in a city all alone? It’s not a true apocalyptic scene, but it is scary all the same, don’t you think?

This is a really thought-provoking exhibition simply because it’s taking our reality and making it unreal. It’s not Hollywood’s take, but I think that it’s even more profound because it is somehow identifiable to any one of us.

Instead of GDP…

Well, it looks like the wishes of disrupters (like Umair Haque) are going to be happy to hear this news. I know that I am! Good.is forwarded a link from treehugger, where they’re talking about a really big positive action to come out of the Rio+20 environmental conference. After the dismal retreat that came from Durban, people have been gloomily wondering whether our world leaders are really taking the very serious issues of plantary health and social welfare as seriously as a lot of individuals and organizations are.

And then, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon discussed the need for the world to move past the antiquated GDP measuring tool that has failed to show the true prosperity of nations. Instead of measuring the tangibles of “wealth”, which do not show the true measure of “success” at the citizen’s level, he agrees that we need to create a broader measurement that also covers the social developmental aspects of humanity as well as an added health measurement for our planet and its integrated eco-systems.

We can thank the Earth Institute at Columbia University for creating a more visible tool to help this conversation florish. Though it’s not a new topic, it is definitely one that is gaining  support after watching the last year and this year’s upheaval in global society against blindfolded capitalism. Read the report to see the details for this very necessary conversation: World Happiness Report 2012.

You know how the saying goes, “Money can’t buy happiness!” And if you haven’t read Umair’s latest, Betterness, then you’re missing out on a great conversation that he’s been having for years. It’s a short but very impactful read that will give you hope.

Luminaris Shines So Bright

I was lucky enough to find this because Vimeo was showcasing it on their front page. If you haven’t seen this fun short, which takes the charm of stop-motion with the heart-stopping styling used during the silent film age, then you really need to watch the story unfold. Argentinian director/animator Juan Pablo Zaramella shows us what life is like when you’re driven by a dream that keeps a tight hold on you. And sometimes, those dreams can come true because of help from unexpected places.

Check out Juan’s site to see what other treats he’s created to inspire us with, and then send him a congrats on winning the Audience Award and Fipresci Award at Annecy 2011. It’s easy to see why once you’ve watched Luminaris and realize that his mind makes it shine so bright.

Thanks Vimeo for continuing to bring such talented creators to our attention so that we can share their brilliance with the world!
