More Info Against SOPA

The online voices against SOPA just keep getting stronger, but Congress and Big Money are not hearing the outcries – at least not that I can tell. Every hour, there is a new angle that makes this bill more horrific for anyone who believes in free expression. Considering that the entire globe is up in arms, you’d think that our government would get the big picture. But we all know that they’re not capable of seeing the big picture through all of the potential $$$ that they expect. Running a government like a store about to go under is not a way that embraces logic. They might be desperate in their economic interpretation, but this conversation surpasses their selfish beliefs and leaves it in the dust.

To all of you supporters of SOPA, please explain why it’s so great…other than the copyright infringement windfalls you expect to reap. Except that there won’t be any windfalls because creative distribution and innovation will be handed to those with the largest purse strings, and that is not the individual artist. And while the artist may get a few tiny scraps (check out this infographic by Information Is Beautiful.net and posted by @robschwager – and this theft isn’t limited to musicians), they’ll be losing personal freedoms for themselves and the entire Net while destroying its functionality in the process.

Here’s the latest stories that tell the story:

There’s more coming out every hour, but it’s clear that those at the top are the ones who need a lesson that there are things that should not ever in their purview. When we make legislation without seeking out all of the SMEs, then we only create more opportunities for unknown casualties because of our lack of knowledge. And some things can’t be fixed once they’re shattered. Keep the word going and I’ll keep passing on more info against SOPA as I find it. This is one fight we can’t let go until it’s over and buried.

After all, I prefer the image above to be how our Net looks, and not some fragmented networks that remove our global interconnections. If you want to join your voice with the international community opposing this draconian bill, add your name to Avaaz’s global petition: Save the Internet! And contact your Congressmen to tell them that you’re against censorship and demand to keep the Net free for us all.

Germany In Pink

Wouldn’t you love to live on this street? I know that I would. It’s completely unreal, and the people in Bonn, Germany get to see it everyday (while they’re in season). Marcel Bednarz is a photographer with an amazing eye for natural beauty. You can see more of his work on 500px and get in contact with him via his site to see what else he’s shooting.

Another one of my favorites from his collection is London Tower Bridge. The atmosphere in this image is breathtakingly sinister – like the history of this famous landmark.

Thanks My Modern Met for another amazing talent!

A Bike Stops Near You – in Denmark

This has got to be the most beautiful environmental program that I’ve seen in a while. RAFAA Architecture & Design has designed a Net-based bicycle reservation system that not only provides for a large number of bicycles (25,000 was an estimate to increase commuters from 37% to 50% by 2015) for Copenhagen, Denmark, but does it with a design for visual impact as well as with a limited external footprint. This design won the 2010 Reddot design award, and its easy to see why. Go to their site to see the various bike stop concepts that would allow a rider to rent a bicycle throughout the city via the Net. Innovation marries inspiration with a dose of perspiration (from the rider) to create a bike stop near you. More cities around the world should use a concept like this to increase public transportation availability, decrease our carbon footprint, and get in a chance for some exercise while taking in the beauty of nature.

Don’t forget to check out their other designs on their site. They definitely have a flair for clean, beautiful modern lines and curves in each and every one of their concepts.

Holstee Speaks Some More

Ok, I seriously got choked up over this video by Holstee. These are the same guys that came out with the incredible manifesto, Life Is Short, that is making the rounds on the Net (and in life). Whenever I see one more person really get what life can be if we follow our passions, then it’s a cause for celebration. And it looks like Holstee really gets it if you browse through their blog and seeing their work. Each new person that gets added to this pursuit that will help our future become brighter is one more addition to a powerful army of lovers, not fighters.

And if this video doesn’t convince you, then read this letter from your life on Holstee’s blog! It really hits that warm spot in my soul.

What would your manifesto say?

– Thanks Modern Met for this one!

Our Future? by PostPanic!

A look into the mind of a creative is not always the most comforting act, though it’s typically rewarding. The one thing that they do accomplish is the act of making us think. Instead of dealing with a present reality, they can reach into the future and put together another reality that takes on a whole new meaning (of terror in this case). Our actions have consequences. Every person contributes to creating a future reality with their individual thoughts and actions, no matter how inconsequential they may seem.

PostPanic! proves it with their OFFF 2011 Titles video, an introduction to this year’s event participants embroiled into a very graphic view of their vision of our future. Continue reading

We Are One Globally

When I started writing today’s first post, I was feeling huge frustration and even anger with our business, politics, and economics. I actually had a technical post ready about the disrespect that economics creates in every section of our lives (especially small and large business practices). But then something changed, and once again I felt positively inspired.

Like me, you’ve probably been tracking SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), the bill that is creating a huge uproar in the tech sector. November 16th was American Censorship Day, a day that protests the unimaginable actions that our government has been taking against protecting a free Net. It’s the one thing that gets me up in arms more than anything (and that says a lot), because I’m one of the Net users who believes in protecting our freedom and connection at any cost. This is one battle that I’ll stand front and center with everyone because I believe that the Net is a key for global prosperity, equality, knowledge, and connection.

What changed for me was the sight of this global campaign, started to join the enormous US outcry from November 16th’s inept and biased Congressional proceedings. It makes it worse when you look at the bill’s supporters and how much they contributed to it speedy passage, more evidence that our Congress is bought. No, it wasn’t just this hopeful campaign but all of the campaigns, calls, emails, posts, and tweets of a global community once again raising its combined voices to be heard against injustice. The anger wasn’t just from regular people, but also human rights groupsVCs,  from the EU (which I was a bit amazed to see considering their usual modus operandi) and from within our own government.

With mankind continuing to stand up for one another at signs of injustice, we have our first opportunity to truly come together to build a much better world. Now we need to turn this into a living reality.

edit regarding the VCs link on a study about Internet regulation changes: I was just recently notified of a name change for Booz & company, who are now known as Strategy&. Check out their site if you want to learn more about them.

Magic of Words

I finally got to see the final Harry Potter movie. I decided to wait because, frankly, I wasn’t ready for it to end. But as I got to my favorite scene of the movie, I heard the most amazing words spoken by Dumbledore to Harry (thanks to Harry Potter Wiki for this image): Words are our most inexhaustible source of magic.

The ending of this scene when Dumbledore describes his power with words sums up how I feel as a writer: My imagination comes to life with my words. The world that I want lives through carefully chosen phrases. I use my words in so many ways, for so many reasons. I can use them to teach, to describe, to motivate, and to feel. What illustrators do with lines, writers do with letters. Put them together to create the words that make magic come alive for each and every one of us, in our own way.

But we also need to remember to nourish that magic so that it stays alive within us. Never take the magic for granted, because it can desert you if you don’t treat it right. It takes magic to make magic. The magic of setting yourself free to imagine all that can be. Sharing it to grow into something more magnificent. After all, magic shared is the most powerful magic of all.

I hope that you enjoy reading my words as much as I enjoy creating and sharing them with you all. And I also hope that each and every one of you finds that magic within you and sets it free in whatever form you want it to be. It’s one of the most amazing feelings in the world, and I wish it for you.

Man Tsun Is Transparent

My Modern Met had a magical chat with Man Tsun about his transparency works, and I got a new appreciation that I didn’t see when I first heard about this. He likes to be atypical and find new mediums to create his magic, and I think that he’s on a great track to do just that.

An About page tells alot about a person and I seriously love his words: “A world with Art and Creativity is like a Harry Potter novel without magic.” That first sentence sold me on his vision for his creations, which he develops as he “with every stroke, the wish is to enliven every piece of Art with spells of enchantment from a ‘magic wand’ dipped in the ink of an artist’s soul.”

Seriously, how can you not admire someone who thinks like this?!

Thanks again, My Modern Met, for finding an amazing artist with an amazing look at his passion.

Herakut Is Creating Up Another Storm

Here’s a portion of Herakut‘s latest work in Los Angeles, the location for their latest project for the Wende Museum’s Behind The Wall project. It was completed on the whim while they await the unveiling of their actual work (along with D*Face and Retna) for the Wall project: find out more about their creation on a segment of the original Berlin Wall by checking out the Wende Museum‘s exhibit.

In The End, What Moves You?

With all of the protest commentaries and people choosing to walk away from the banality of a lifestyle, I wanted to pinpoint in words why I want change to occur. Especially after all of the unbelievable government subversion that I am seeing happening around the country (and the world). As a supporter of the Occupy movement, I see that what they’re doing is critical to change. But I, like many others, also see that the current form that this movement is taking will not be able to be sustained forever, no matter how passionate the occupiers are. And that’s not a bad thing because everything changes as it grows. That doesn’t mean that this movement is doomed to failure because it has already succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. We are thinking about what they’re talking about. Their ideals are becoming our aspirations. They have forced the most educated amongst us to acknowledge that they got some things catastrophically wrong. And they are moving others like never before. Continue reading
