Well, you wanted it, so Advertising Age put together an infographic based on dated provided by Magid Generational Studies. No, it’s not the graphic above. And More Hilarity – A Tribute by Ian Thomas

Ian Thomas, a Canadian photographer, was so inspired by Terry Border’s “Bent Objects“, that he came up with his own different and hilarious twist of perspective that still pays tribute to Terry’s vision. So without further ado, meet “Stuff That Comes Alive When I Go To Sleep”:

Japanese Sense of Humor – Okite

Okite alarm app is an embarrassing way to wake up in the morning. Or that’s what they’re hoping you’ll feel. For all of us who love our snooze button, well, we might want to steer away from Okite. Everytime you hit your snooze button on your cell, Okite will send an embarrassing tweet about you with #okite attached (so you can see just how bad you and the app were).

Simply set your alarm like you always do in your cell, choose male or female for conversation, and go to sleep. If you hit your snooze, then Okite does the rest with embarrassing comments. Though I’m not sure that whether there are only tailor-made comments (e.g. “I guess I wanted to be a stewardess after all”), or if unique ones can be submitted. Though why anyone would submit a comment that might come back to them while they snooze? There doesn’t seem to be a set list of comments, so who knows what might get blurted out. hmmm, I guess that we better wake up on time if we’re planning to use Okite! Find out more from the Apple App store.

Today’s Going To Be Light

I know that you haven’t seen a lot of light in a while here, so today is going to be that day. Because sometimes you just need it to be so. Light and inspiring, that is. So, have a great day! Go create – anything, but just make it good. We need more of that…

Needing To See A Good Ending To One Day

Updated 9/25/11: They’re back on US soil!

Today will end on a good note, simply because we all need it!

Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal are finally free, after a 2-year imprisonment in Iran. Shane Bauer’s fiancee, Sarah Shourd, was released over a year ago, and has been awaiting the news of their release ever since. On September 21, 2011, her dreams were finally answered. Though politics once again got in the way of the timely release that was promised by Iran, it finally happened after years of broken promises. The details of their capture while they hiked along the Iranian border are still being disputed. But at this point, all that matters is that they are going home to resume their lives.

Strength In Style

As you probably already know, I visit DesignTaxi a lot. They always help me find some amazing creative inspirations that get my own mind going. The one place that I haven’t spent too much time browsing is their Creative Finder space, which has some amazing talents that would probably derail my productivity for days. But today, a glimpse caught my eye which told me that I had to see what was on offer.

Devil Management © Sara Tyson Ring leader © Sara Tyson

And that’s how I found Sara Tyson. Sara has been creating these types of powerful images for over 25 years, and has a slew of well-known clients and accomplishments to her name. But I think what draws me to her is the multifaceted layers of color, shapes, emotion, and message all bound into an image that manages to convey the intent directly. Her style is lush with symbolism and reminds you of a style that she admires: Byzantine art. But what I like the most is that she brings with her a sense that you’re looking at humanity as how we really are: flawed, fragmented, yet colorful and still beautiful. This is art at its best!

It’s good to find people who can inspire you to come up with your own amazing creations. Go out there and find those people who inspire you, or find some who is still waiting to be discovered, then share them with the world. This is how beauty spreads. Simple, right?

Reinterpret A Sign or Two

We see road signs all around us, telling us to do things in a sometimes imperious manner. For the age of political correctness, it seems that the signs didn’t get that memo. Of course, this might partially have to do with several factors:

  • Time to communicate
  • Too large a message to distill quickly
  • Limited audience space
  • Old-fashioned mentalities
  • Lack of resources to make effective products

The people who are many times called to design these signs are not the types of people who concentrate on the concept of design. But why not ask designers to accomplish this task? After all, they do this type of design work on a daily basis for a multitude of clients and messages. Well, Blueprint Magazine in the UK decided that it was high time to do just this. So, they put out a call to architects, designers, and illustrators to come up with a new bumper crop of signs that will talk in the language of the 21st century. No, the language hasn’t changed per say, but the audience has. How do you think they did?

The Intricacies of Kate Raudenbush

I found an image of this artwork by Kate Raudenbush. It’s called the Braindrop, and is a meditation space for us to reflect on the importance of water for our own evolutionary sustenance. It’s a 17′ structure made of steel, and carved with inspiration from Japanese textiles and Pacific Rim tattoo patterns.

As Kate states, “We are water beings on a water planet called Earth.

Pretty awesome thought inspired by a pretty amazing space, don’t you think?

Superheroes Were Once Babies

I’ll bet that you never thought to see The Thing from the Fantastic Four as a baby. Well, artist Alexandre Nicolas is giving baby superheroes a new life with his 3D installation, Les Prédestinés, which immortalizes 8 myths as they might be in a laboratory setting. They include Silver Surfer, Superman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, The Hulk, Hollowman, Batman, Catwoman, and The Thing. And in a weird commentary, he’s also made a Hitler baby, which I guess is his statement about the risks of creation?

Books, Books, Everywhere Books

Have you wondered about how mankind has changed over the years? Have you ever wanted to read all of the available books to find out (YES!)? Because there is a lot of information to be found in the billions of words that have been written that can be reviewed to find the trends over time. We’ve all heard that Google is currently digitizing as much of the world library as they can. While this protects the words of millions of authors, it also gives us a tool to view humanity. Google Labs Ngram Viewer shows data that tells a huge story about what is happening within civilization:

  • popularity of a topic
  • themes of a time
  • suppression and popularity of an author
  • social wellbeing
  • and so much more

Watch the Ted Talk given by Erez Lieberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michel, because it’s an interesting and hilarious presentation on a powerful tool. Then give the tool a try to see what you want to track within the world library: I want to try the Google Ngram Viewer!
