I just found another amazing French illustrator who is as sassy as my all-time favorite, Arthur De Pins. Margaux Motin is popular for her modern-day heroines who are glamorous, just a bit risque, and absolutely adorable. She’s got a few books out and is currently illustrating for popular woman’s magazines like Marie Claire, Glamour, and many more. Take a peak at the sweet image above that I found through Piccsy. It’s amazing how the French do chic so well, don’t you think? And go check out her blog to see what amazing fun her characters are having.

Overcoming Differences

Isn’t this image of the insides of the Hagia Sophia absolutely breathtaking (thanks Wikipedia for the image, for the history, and for finally teaching me how to say the name properly)?

Today, a friend showed me some pictures of Iran and Istanbul, and I was in awe at the beauty of these lands. I know about Istanbul because I’m infatuated with the ancient history, but the images of Iran opened my eyes. I’ve always loved to travel, and am now chomping at the bit to visit the many, many countries that I have yet to experience. I still haven’t even broken double digits in the number of countries that I’ve had the opportunity to visit. One of my favorite writers, Chris Guillebeau, is almost finished with his mission to visit all of the countries in the world. I am so envious, though I know that only I can make the next move.

While I was talking to a few people, I started to realize that I am just as guilty as others in carrying prejudices caused by misinformation. Considering that I’m a multi-cultural person (I also talk more about it here), I’m actually upset with myself. Lately, race has become a fire starter, and I wish that there was a way that we can turn around all this misinformation into something more beautiful and empowering.

I was telling them a story about my first experience of Mexico (well, the border sign) and my impressions that had been tainted by lots of rumor and bad advice to the point that I was afraid to cross the border. It’s crazy how many of us are held hostage by fear because we only listen to other’s words without direct experience. Though, I’ve visited Mexico a few times since then, I still have yet to go to the places that I want to visit (like Chichen-Itza and Palenque). And my list is getting longer and longer, now that I’ve seen my friend’s images. I want to learn about these cultures first hand, so that I can pick out the right information from the wrong.

But my biggest dream of all is that we all can be proud of our heritages, but not have to be labeled by them. As I mentioned, I spent my earlier years having to chose “other” from a list of nationalities on any government form I had to fill out. Frankly, this makes you really despise the idea of national labels. Every country on this planet has a unique and vibrant history that is part of the story of mankind. Each one of these stories is an important part of the whole picture of Earth’s inhabitants.

We need to get over labels, and start to get to know one another. Be able to visit other countries without having to deal with prejudices. We’ve got enough problems in this world, and the issue of race should be a non-issue. Be proud of your history, but don’t see it as the be-all, end-all of who you are. You’ll still have experiences that will make you into a better person, if you let them broaden your horizons. It’s a big, big world out there, and people everywhere deserve to be looked at individually – and not by their appearances.

just saying…

p.s. This is my way of apologizing to anyone if I’ve ever seemed insensitive on the topic of prejudices. Because I’m a mutt (and proud of it), I absolutely don’t like topics that separate, so you can imagine how I feel about racism and prejudice. My mixed ancestry makes me proud of many countries linked to me by blood, but I still feel that I am a person of the world. I have no one specific land that I call my home. Earth is my home and I want to experience every square inch of it. That’s just a small part of my bucket list. Because I want to find a way to move past these topics that divide and overcome differences.

The Voice Inside

Shel Silverstein is beloved to anyone who’s ever read any of his books (I need to reread them again), which have walked along with us a we grew from child to adult. A Redditer found a great reminder from that incredible writer. It’s simply called the voice, but the message is all too important and something that we too often forget because there are too many external voices drowning out that most important inner voice.

And Nature Creates All

If you haven’t visited the National Geographic site in a while (like me – I’m sorry), then you’ve been missing some spectacular Photos of the Day. This gorgeous image by Benjamin Jakabek of a slumbering fur seal lying next to a Sally Lightfoot crab on Santiago Island (in the Galapágos Islands) shows the absolute beauty that nature creates. In fact, we’re all a living part of this planet’s eco-system, and must learn to co-exist as peacefully as these two seem to have.

It’s incredible to think that those living creatures who are closest to nature understands her rhythms the best. Instead of fighting the cycle, they have learned to adapt to it and live as harmoniously as possible. Of course, as we watch those NatGeo shows, we are repeatedly reminded that the nature is not kind but it does seem to have an overall plan. There is no order of importance, as all living creatures are required to participate in this eco-system for it to function properly and continuously. Would that we could actually understand that we humans are also a vital part that has an equal responsibility to all that nature creates. We’re not the top of the food chain, but we are a part of that chain and are responsible for keeping that chain intact.

Woman Creates Man Creating Man

Sand sculptures can really be amazing creations. The fact that they are so transitory makes them all the more special. We’ve all seen some incredible pieces that defy our imagination, but this one also seems to make a statement. The sculptor is Karen Fralich, and it was completed back in 2006 for the Revere Beach festival.

So here it is, a woman creates a man creating man. All I can say is that it really is a gorgeous image, and kudos to her sculpting skills and imagination. Once again, the mind that soars is really quite capable to do anything you set your mind to.

– yes, yes, Reddit once again. They just have such amazing finds, don’t they. People connecting with more people can result in so much inspiration.

Resistance Is NOT Futile

Reddit shared a few images that instantly reminded me of that famous Borg phrase, “Resistance is futile.” Well, by the looks of things, resistance is not futile at all. Take a look at:

Resistance Cat

Cats are notorious for not listening. Or reading, in this case ; )    Notice his attitude.

Surf meets turf and out comes a rainbow, or even out of resistance can come beauty…

And then sometimes, resistance requires the need to move

Yes, resistance comes in all forms. We only hear about the violence of resistance, and yet we all know that there are many ways to countermand what you don’t agree with. The one way that makes resistance palatable is that we deal with it with brutal honesty. We can only reach the best course of action for ourselves by understanding what it is we hold most preciously. Not what others tell you is proper, but what you feel is the best decision, even if it goes against everything you’ve ever been taught. And to always understand that each one of us holds our own destiny in our own hands, and must take the consequences of each and every decision we will make.

So, make your decisions good ones!

– thanks for inspiring these thoughts, Reddit.

Cello Spirit

So, if you’re a fan of Nirvana then you’ll recognize this song. But the twist is that it’s an insane CELLO piece done by two incredibly talented cellists for Sirius XM. Take a listen, pick up your jaw, and then go out and enjoy your day. This will put you in a seriously GREAT mood! Especially when you get to watch their matching personalities…sheer awesomeness.

Thought For The Day: Never Too Small

So, life is difficult and you don’t feel like you’re large enough to make a difference. Not in size. Not in impact. Not in significance. So, take a look at this African proverb and think twice. There are many small living creatures on this planet who have a lot of significance. Actually, they all do…just as much as we do. We’re all part of the life chain. Break one link, and the whole chain loses its integrity.

That’s you. If a mosquito can make its presence felt, then so can any of us. It’s all about how determined we are to be felt, heard, and understood. You’re never too small.

– thanks to Piccsy for this important message

Are Memories Good?

We all have memories, but are they all good? I guess it depends on what you’re concentrating on. There’s a Vimeo video that just came out called “The Lost & Found Shop” that is incredibly unique and so full of life. It’s hard to believe that Caleb Slain managed to capture it in less than 3 days on a limited budget. While it’s budget might be small, it’s imagination is immense and it shows in the story. You would think that a childhood memory would be heartwarming, but there’s more to the story than meets the eye. What we see is not the same as what the person holding the memory sees. They have a lifetime of experiences tied into their own memories, and we are but bystanders let in for just a moment or two as they share it with us.

But wouldn’t it be amazing if we could each have a memory player that could easily play back those memories in living color, just like they happened. We’d be able to reach into our past and connect with loved ones lost, or even see details that we might have missed back then.

Share this short because it really is a quite special. And check out other things that Caleb’s done. I know I will. Unsurprisingly, everyone loves his work, and it’s easy to see why.

Gloam

We are The Forest has put together a short called Gloam that really is quiet and lovely. What kind of creature is this, and what is holding its interest so avidly? We get to go on a magical walk with this woodland creature as he (?) stumbles upon something unexpected. What is it, and how it affect him. Open up your imagination and see where it takes you. It seems like that’s what We are The Forest wants you to do. A refreshing challenge for us to make the story come to life…afterwards. Nicely done!
