Inspiration Comes From Deep Within

Well, this particular posting was created thanks to some confusion caused by one reader’s comments on a previous post. Comments about the loss of the TV series, Rubicon, on the Serenity Rose post had me stumped. I never had the chance to watch the entire series of Rubicon, but I do remember it having the flavor of X-Files and Eagle Eye. And I seriously love these type of shows that make you think while immersing yourself into their storyline. But I was stumped because I’m not getting the connection with Aaron’s graphic novel and Rubicon, unless you compare the dark gloomy atmospheres and anti-establishment leanings. Now, I’m usually all for looking for tenuous connections to enhance the mind game, but I’m simply drawing a blank here. Anyone want to help me out?

But what this comment did provide was an enlightening train of thought about why certain creations are popular, while others aren’t. Reviewing the many visions at Kickstarter that are looking for support, I was trying to understand why some projects drew me in while others just weren’t for me. It’s not to say that there was anything wrong with their concepts, just that they didn’t speak to me personally. I even read about one person’s quest to study successful projects to see why they succeeded in the face of some daunting odds so that their own project could be tailored for popularity. And then my post hit me! We’re all looking to make some kind of splash in the human collective, which is a pretty diverse one to say the least. What make something popular?

Venture capitalists try to come up with formulas that can point out the gems in the rough that will lead to instant success. But I really don’t think that such a formula can adequately cover all of the odds. Like I keep saying, humans are an unpredictable variable, and success takes time. Take Harry Potter, which covers some unpopular topics but still became a global phenomenon and changed JK Rowlings life forever. I’ll bet the capitalist formulas couldn’t calculate why this particular book succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams.

I can’t say that I have the answer, but I do see a common thread that connects shows, art, books, and other creations that become cult classics (even if it does take time). The things that I collect and treasure all came to me because they spoke to my heart and soul. Most likely, they’ll be with me throughout my life because they’ve impacted it in a positive way. The shows (movies and tv) that attract me speak to my inner voice. This voice directs me to find things that will inspire my thoughts, dreams, and creative motivations. Many of the things that attract me aren’t the types of things that will attract the majority of the population. Let’s face it, I’m not part of the major collective. I enjoy living out on the fringe, and viewing the entire world through my own multi-hued lenses. I don’t get talked into things just because they’re popular – I guess that I’m stubborn that way. Even so, my neck of the woods seems pretty crowded with similar types of people.

And that brought me back to my reader’s comments. We’ve had some great albeit not-highly-rated shows get taken from the light simply because they didn’t generate expected revenue or interest. This world is all about immediate gratification with no requirement for deep thinking. Shows like Rubicon, Star Trek, Dr. Who, The X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Farscape, Dark Shadows, Firefly, Daria, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and so many more were not always given the proper venue in which to shine. But the avid love and obsession of their followers propped them above any formulas, simply because they came from the heart of their creators and were meant to touch others in some deeper manner.

Connections are formed between humans by more than calculations and chemical reactions. The staying power of inspiration comes from somewhere much deeper and eternal, and won’t stay the same for every creation. What does stay the same is that it’s able to touch the soul. If all else fails, use your own soul as a barometer to see if your creation is what you want it to be. If it is, then it’ll probably touch others as well. That to me means success.

P.S. Thanks for all of your amazing comments! I do take the time to read and respond (if possible) to each and every one of you. You can check out the post’s comments section to see my responses. I’m excited about our journey together to look at creativity in its many guises.
