Do What You Love

It makes so much sense, and yet so many of us forsake it to do for others. But at some time during your life, you’ll realize that the only way to fill your well is to simply do what you love. Typically, people think of this as pursuing a hobby, something to enjoy in your off time. But does it really have to be just some activity that you enjoy once in a while, when time permits? Yes, life is busy and we all have so many people asking for our help. It’s good to answer these calls, because you’re making a difference in their lives. But sooner or later, you need to make a difference for yourself. It’ll expand your horizons because you’ll find that your interests will develop into callings, which will make you into a formidable force for change. Continue reading

Death of A Humanist

In response to all of the logistics, strategies, and calculations that we use to reach dominance, I would like to present a tribute to humanity of a bygone era: The Humanist in the Foxhole. It’s an eloquent  tribute piece to the travel writer, Patrick Leigh Fermor, written by Robert D. Kaplan for the New York Times. Here was a man, once a soldier, who embraced the world and all that it offered. Here was an example to aspire towards. Here are the enumerated qualities that favor humanism in our leadership in order to maintain our continued prosperity.

As Mr. Kaplan states, “…Such expertise can only be built on devotion to subject, with no ulterior motive”  and “The more depth and rarity of knowledge we can implant in our officials, the less likely they are to serve up the wrong options in a crisis”.

What more can be said? Find out directly from Mr. Kaplan’s piece. Here is an example of what we all lost when another little piece of humanity died.

(moment of silence)

My small tribute is also for those countless others who have inspired in their own way towards making this world a better place for the rest of us, but remain known only to their loved ones and the lucky few who know them. You have my everlasting gratitude.

Embrace a Little Chaos

Today I was hit over the head with a report titled, The Single Bottom Line, written by Daniel Altman and Jonathan Berman of the Dahlberg Global Development Advisors. After having read it, the accompanying story on the New York Times site, and Prof. Altman’s comment to others comments on the report (including one to me), I’ve come to the conclusion that we as a society need to embrace a little chaos in our lives. In a gist, the paper was written in support of a single bottom line using calculated formulas (CSV and CSR) for tying corporate goodwill activities to corporate profitability in the long term. I’m not going to go into details as it was painful to read the three times that I did (once at the author’s behest, which I did to see if I missed anything the first two times). Needless to say, I think that this penchant that we Americans have to only move in calculated manners that create benefit for us is both shortsighted and destructive. When goodwill is reduced to cost-to-benefit ratios, then we’ve gone too far off the spectrum of morality.

My question: How does one acknowledge that there are wonders in this world, if we no longer have a soul to use in order to admire those wonders? Continue reading

Definition of Entrepreneur

Ilise Benun from the Creative Freelancers Blog put up a link to a riveting story presented by Dan McComb of Biznik. The story is told in video form, and the story tellers within Shine: The Entrepreneur’s Journey is one that should be heard because there are so many people out there who fit this mold.

We all know who we are, and know how to try to fit into a stereotype. Every field has a definition, but not all fields are jobs. One such field is that of entrepreneurship. The stories behind the stereotype of an entrepreneur are vast and heart-breaking, as you’ll find in Shine. Continue reading

Inspire Us, Bring Us Together

We live in a fragmented world, where everyone has their own agenda. But what happens when a community is brought together by one simple vision? Advertisers are one such group who are tasked with creating these visions by companies, individuals, and even governments. But they’re not the only ones as each and every one of us does something similar everyday. The problem is in finding a message that will call to people universally. In order for that to happen, we need to trigger an emotion that will cause people to react. Hopefully, the reactions are ones that we intend. But sometimes even the unexpected can be good (e.g. flash mobs).

Messages bombard us everyday, much like digital mines being transmitted across diverse communication networks. Images and sounds cascade over us as we immerse ourselves into the chaotic world that surrounds us. We even carry little pieces of our world in the technology that broadcasts our persona. The plans behind the messages may be complex, but the intention should always be pure. Because all of these messages have the potential to connect with something deep within us all. Continue reading

Cute with Brains

I know I’m a month late, but I just stumbled on the most amazing and adorable device by Neurowear called Necomimi. If you are familiar with Japanese manga, then you’ll know what they are. Translated as “cat ears”, it’s a staple in anime and manga characters where animal ears reflect the characters moods. Continue reading

Building Your World

Our personal surroundings and belongings are as diverse as our thoughts. Every house, every office, every thing is a reflection of its owner because that’s how we humans operate. We like to surround ourselves with comfort, familiarity, and inspiration because it’s our way to nest. For example, color (on the wall or in the accessories) can reflect our personality or perhaps takes on a mood that we desire to immerse ourselves into. Red can be passionate, blue can be calming, yellow can be cheery, and green can be natural. Is white boring or is it clean? Is black depressing? It depends on the individual. Just like some of us love Vanilla, while others have to have Rocky Road. We’re all made up of individual experiences that drive what we like and what we collect. Continue reading

Good News For Loomis Fans

For all of you artists who are Andrew Loomis fans, Titan Books has just released a new facsimile edition printing of Figure Drawing for All Its Worth. His books are classic instructional books that everyone swears by if you want to learn the basics of figure drawing. There were six books in total, and from what I hear, Titan Books has plans to reprint Drawing the Head and Hands, Creative Illustration, and Fun With a Pencil as well.

Though there are PDF versions of these long out-of-print books floating around the Net, here’s your chance to get your hands on an actual hard copy without breaking the bank. Otherwise, be prepared to try your luck finding the now-expensive originals (like I did) on Ebay or at used books stores. Happy drawing!

When It’s Too Much

Communication is a delicate balance of give and take. If you take it too far in either direction, then it overwhelms and becomes ineffective. In today’s age of instant communication via any number of tools, it’s possible to keep talking 24-7. I’m not much of a talker, so the sheer number of calls, emails, and mailings are becoming frustrating in their frequency. We’re surrounded by an over-abundance of information and services that others have to offer. Notice that I said “offer”, which means that I can choose to either accept or reject them. It’s not so pleasant to communicate when your participation becomes mandatory. Continue reading

What Power!

Just when you think that you’ve seen it all, the universe throws out something that simply blows your mind. NASA captured an M-2 solar flare on June 7, 2011 that has to be seen to be believed. Here’s a clip, and here’s the link at the NASA site. You’ve got to check out the video. It’s amazing!
